Carpet stains are near the top of my personal list of pet peeves. I’m not talking about an ® accidental spill that when addressed quickly can be successfully removed. In fact, I get a lot of

Apply a small amount of white glue to the now-exposed carpet backing one small area at a time because you are going to replace the threads one at a time from those you’ve harvested from the closet.

Stand one piece of yarn into place at a time using eraser end of the pencil to press it into the glue. Hold for a few seconds until it adheres.

Repeat until the hole is filled. Once the glue is dry, trim as necessary so the replaced fibers match the height of the surrounding pile.

This is going to be a delicate operation, particularly if yours is low-pile carpet. But don’t despair. It should work beautifully if you exercise the care and precision of a skilled surgeon.

It’s not a perfect solution, but I’ve observed professionals do this with such amazing results its difficult to detect a repair was made -- unless you open the closet.

I write a column similar to this one every January. But I don’t mind plagiarizing myself because it contains a very important message for people planning to retire in 2018.

January is a critical month for the hundreds of thousands of potential Social Security beneficiaries who are reaching 66, their so-called full retirement age, in 2018. The important message: All of them should at least consider filing for their benefits this month, even though they may not be reaching their retirement age until later in the year.

Please note: This technique should not be employed by folks who plan to use the soon-todisappear maximizing strategy called “file and restrict” (still available to people turning 66 in 2018) because that procedure requires you to wait until age 66 or later before filing for benefits. Also, if you want to delay filing for your own Social Security benefits until 70 to get a 32 percent delayed retirement bonus, then you also should forgo the procedure discussed in this column.

But if you are not interested in either of those strategies, and you plan to start your benefits at 66 in 2018, then, as I said, you may want to consider filing for benefits in January.

The reason for this early filing timeframe has to do with some quirky and complicated features of Social Security’s earnings penalty provisions. The only prescription I take is zolpidem for sleep, but I would consider any meds that would help stop this. -- S.H. ANSWER: There are several medical reasons to have music in your head. One is called “musical ear syndrome,” which is a type of hallucination most commonly associated with hearing loss. Another is associated with psychiatric disease, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder, but also with schizophrenia or mood disorders.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with pancreatic cysts. A recent MRI scan showed that they are less than 2 cm and have been stable for a year. My doctor tells me these are benign and don’t need any more follow-up. Could these cysts become cancerous later on? -- K. ANSWER: The medical term “cyst” means any fluid-filled, walled structure. They can occur in practically any anatomic location you can think of.

In the pancreas, there are several types of cysts, as well as pseudocysts (fluid collections, usually as a result of pancreatitis, that develop a wall after some weeks), and cystic neoplasms, which have the potential to become cancerous.

You didn’t tell me how you were diagnosed.

Very often, these are found incidentally when a CT scan is obtained for some other reason. In this case, when there are no symptoms present, the only concern is whether they can grow and cause symptoms later on, or worse yet, could become cancerous. Since pancreatic cancer is justifiably feared, I understand your reasons for asking the question.

Fortunately, I agree with your doctor completely. The likelihood of a small cyst (your largest cyst is 1.4 cm) being cancer is less than 5 percent.

Since it hasn’t changed in a year of follow-up, your risk for cancer is very, very low. * * *

Good for You and Others Too

Have you broken your New Year’s resolutions yet? It’s not too late to try again. But this time, why not go with just two? One for you, and one for others.

Here are a few for you:

 Give the local American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars a try if you’re not a regular member. You’ll get out of it what you put in.

Participate in the events and help with their goals, especially if they involve helping other veterans.

 Organize your paperwork so that when the time comes, your final wishes will be known.

See a lawyer and make a will, then gather your military paperwork, and let someone know where it is. Include your DD-214.

 Ask questions to be sure you’re getting all the benefits you’re entitled to. Home loans, education and medical are just the tip of the iceberg.

And a few for others:

 Plan a visit to the closest Department of Veterans Affairs hospital to see how you can help.

Contact voluntary services and see what they need.

If you’re not near a medical center, search online for “veterans helping veterans.”

 If you served during a war period, look into adding your story to the Veterans History Project. The stories of veterans are valuable (and so is yours) and can be told in many ways. Go online to www.loc.gov/vets/ and see how how you can participate.

 Decide to be a monthly Secret Santa and anonymously send a grocery store gift card to a veteran you know is struggling, especially if there are kids in the family.

If it seems like some of the ideas above are a combination of good for you and good for others too, you’re right. Sometimes doing for others actually benefits us as well.

We have an old German beer pitcher and mug set that has been in our family many years. Enclosed in my letter, is a picture. The pitcher stands almost 8 inches tall and the mugs are about 4 inches tall. All are decorated with the image of a man with a pipe. The glaze is shiny and shades from brown to tan.

Each piece is marked with a knight’s helmet, crossed swords and the words “IogaWarwick.”

Any information about the maker, when it was made and value would be appreciated.

International Silver Company was formed in 1898. They made both sterling silver and silver plate wares. Your coffee set is silver plate and the pattern is “Camille.” The line consisted of coffee/tea sets, butter dishes, platters, trays, candlesticks and cake plates.

There is very little interest or value in silver plate wares. Most people don’t want to invest time in maintaining and polishing. It is too formal for today’s casual lifestyles. Even selling can be difficult.

You might try offering it for sale on the internet or placing it on consignment at an antiques shop.

Your coffee set was made in the mid-20th century and might be worth $150 to $200.

Warwick China Company made your beer pitcher set. The factory was founded in 1887 in Wheeling, West Virginia. They produced porcelain and semi-porcelain that included umbrella stands, dinnerware, jardinieres, shaving mugs, and restaurant, hotel and railroad ware. Many pieces were handpainted and others were decorated with transferware.

Beer pitchers were often decorated with images of fishermen, Native Americans, monks, musicians and eagles. The mark you described was used from 1905 to 1920. No one knows the significance of the word “Ioga.” It continues to baffle collectors and remains a perplexing mystery.
