GARAGE-SALE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING. I agree with Mary about Christmas shopping in July. But I start even earlier. When garage-sale season kicks into high gear, during spring in the Midwest, I start looking for specific items and buy them when I find them. I store everything in a box in the attic marked “Christmas.” When December rolls around, I look through what I have and then update my shopping list. Garage-sale shopping in the spring and summer is also great for Halloween. I save a bundle on odds and ends for costumes. -- Marlon

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

by Mary Hunt By Samantha Weaver

* It was Swedish poet Vilhelm Ekelund who made the following sage observation: “To read fast is as bad as to eat in a hurry.” * Bullies, take note: Director Wes Craven reportedly named the character Freddy Krueger, from the “Nightmare on Elm Street” horror films, after a kid who had bullied him in school. * Though coffee has been around for about 700 years, instant coffee was invented just over 100 years ago, in 1906, by George Washington. Of course, it wasn’t that George Washington. The man who made coffee more convenient -- and, many would say, less flavorful -- was from Belgium. * Those who study such things claim that there are roughly 5 million bubbles in a single glass of champagne. That factoid begs the question: How do you count the bubbles in a glass of champagne? * The next time you’re planning a European vacation, make time to visit the coast of the Netherlands, where you can stay in one of the world’s most unusual hotels. Along the banks of the Wadden Sea you’ll find Harlingen Harbour Crane, an actual derrick that was once used to haul timber. These days it holds aloft luxurious sleeping quarters designed for only one party at a time. If you need a change of scenery, just head to the control room to swing the crane around until you find a view that strikes your fancy. * Talk about a serious typo: In 2008, the Chilean mint issued thousands of copies of a coin with the country’s name spelled “Chiie” instead of “Chile.” *** Thought for the Day: “It is fortunate to be of high birth, but it is no less so to be of such character that people do not care to know whether you are or are not.” -- Jean de la Bruyere (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Elizabeth, Olivia Colman, and our new Princess Margaret, Helena Bonham Carter. Now get ready for your new Prince Philip: “Outlander” and “Game of Thrones” star Tobias Menzies. As I wrote previously, the roles are being recast because the characters themselves are aging, and producers wanted slightly older actors instead of relying on prosthetics, age makeup and the like. I am a fan of this decision because that kind of stuff often takes me out of the story. I’m also excited Tobias Menzies to see what this new crop of actors will bring to their roles. And don’t feel bad for the original actors. They knew going into the project that they would be recast after season two, and they all agreed with the logic of the decision. For season three, we’ll catch up with the Royal Family in the ‘70s. We’ll also get to meet Camilla Parker Bowles, who, as you know, dated ADVERTISING Prince Charles before he was PROOF betrothed to PrinMon., 12/4/17 5:00 p.m.. Final Changes cess Diana. Q:

What if a solar system using conventional panels costs less?

A:

Assuming both systems are offsetting 100% of the energy you use, and you don’t mind having more panels on your roof, the total amount of energy that’s produced will decrease at a faster rate with a system of conventional panels. This means your 100% will drop rather quickly and leave more of your electricity that will have to be purchased from the utility. You want the panels that will generate as close to 100% for as long as possible in order to save the most money possible. You may also be pleasantly surprised to find that a dealer like Renova, who buys in volume and operates efficiently, can often meet the price of a proposed system from a conventional panel dealer, and offer the more desirable SunPower panels.

Q: What else should I know? A: A panel like SunPower that has

the inverter built-in means that everything is warrantied for 25 years, not just the panels. When you use DC panels, you have a separate inverter (or two) that will need to be mounted in the garage, and you’ll generally only have a 10-year warranty on the inverter. Also ask if the warranty you are being promised for the panels includes labor and parts, not just how long it’s for. Renova Energy is an award-winning local company founded a decade ago that designs and installs commercial and residential solar and advanced battery systems. Solar consultants will answer all your questions and help you decide if solar is right for you - not pressure you into buying a system. Learn more at

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Taking Care of Mom in a Mom and Pop Business Q:

My husband and I run a small business. We are in our early 50s. Our profits are modest, but usually enough to reach the Social Security taxable maximum. For years now, my husband has reported all the income under his name for Social Security purposes. We do this for two reasons. One: We think we will come out ahead if he has a bigger Social Security check. And two: I am a few years younger than my husband, and I think Social Security will be broke by the time I hit retirement age. So why should I bother paying into the system? What do you think of our plan?

A:

You may be onto something with your first bit of reasoning. And I will give you some food for thought about that in a minute. But you are way off base with your “Social Security will be broke so why pay into it” way of thinking. For almost 50 years now, people have been telling me that the system will go belly up before they ever have a chance to collect benefits. Of course, the people who told me that a half-century ago have been getting benefits for decades now

But from your own perspective, the Plan B scenario could turn out to be a big mistake. Over my career of 45-plus years dealing with Social Security issues, I have heard from thousands of women who were involved in a mom and pop business where pop employed Plan B (i.e., he took all the Social Security credit on their tax returns). And in many of these instances, the couple ended up divorced. And guess what happens to poor old mom? She has little or no Social Security credit for all the years of work she put into the business, which means she has little or no Social Security retirement. If you never remarry, you probably would collect divorced spousal benefits on your husband’s account. But that could end up being a meager return for your many years of contributions to the business. However, let’s say you can absolutely guarantee that you and your husband will remain in wedded bliss forever. There are still a couple other reasons why Plan B may not work out for you. One is the issue of Social Security disability benefits. We all don’t stay healthy until our golden years. There is a decent chance you might become disabled before reaching your mid-60s. Under Plan B (where your husband gets all of the Social Security credits), you would have absolutely no disWARNING: Reading Tidbits is habit forming

But in general, for healthy people, low blood pressures are not worrisome. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know about warts. I know they are common in both children and adults. I have one on my thumb. I am 50 years old. Where can the warts spread to? I heard you can find them only on your hands and feet. Is that true? -- J.S.

ANSWER: Warts are raised round or oval growths, caused by the human papilloma virus. Although they most commonly occur on the hands and feet, some strains of HPV are more likely to cause warts in the genital region. Warts can appear on any part of your body, and you can spread them from one part of your body to another, as well as from person to person. Warts are more likely to occur in areas of skin that are irritated, such as cuts, scrapes and even areas that are shaved. For this reason, it’s a good idea to treat the wart quickly, preferably before it gets bigger and harder to treat.

Over-the-counter wart treatments are

Pendant Puzzles Owner Q:

This is a picture of an old pendant that I found in my mother’s jewelr y box. The stones are topaz- and amber-colored. The setting and design are beautiful, but it’s the back of the pendant that is of interest. On the back and in the center is a metal star in a circle. That symbol represents the Texas Ranger badge. Is there a connection between this pendant and the Texas Rangers? I hope you can solve this myster y.

You have an example of an Opal Ware dresser box that was made by C. F. Monroe, in Meriden, Connecticut. Charles F. Monroe founded his company in 1880 and bought blanks from other factories. Some pieces were blown-molded glass. C. F. Monroe purchased blanks from Pairpoint Manufacturing Company located in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and several European glass factories. Opal Ware was white opaque glass, and most pieces had a soft acid-wash finish. They were hand-painted with flowers or transfer print images of angels or young women. “Nakara” is the trade name of the ware. C.F. Monroe also produced “Wave Crest” and “Kelva.” The company closed in 1916. Your “Nakara” dresser box would probably be worth $300 to $500. Monroe also made larger ones that are in the $500 to $1,200 range. Nakara was made by C. F. Monroe.

There is no connection to the Texas Rangers. A star in a circle is also the mark of costume jewelry made by H. D. Merritt & Company. It is just a coincidence that both used the same symbol. H. D. Merritt & Company was located in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, from 1855 to 1930. Similar pendants can be found selling in the range of $35 to $50. * * *

Under Your Chin Making a powerful turn of the body in the backswing might be the one thing that could take your game to the next level. Every long hitter can make a shoulder turn that creates torque against the lower body, enabling speed to develop in the downswing. While flexibility and proper lower body action greatly assist the upper body’s movement, one small cue can remind you to make a big turn.
