• In 1930 a baker in Kentucky named Lively Willoughby was looking for products to expand his line. He wanted to invent a pre-made dinner roll that ladies could take home and cook themselves. He tried storing unbaked biscuits inside cardboard tubes, but they tended to expand and explode in storage.

1 teaspoon salt

1. Heat oven to 350 F. Butter a 3-quart shallow baking dish.

A big part of my job is talking to people about their dogs. Now more than ever, many of those conversations require me to interject for the sake of clarification: “Wait, are you talking about your human child or your dog child?”

Take for example this recent letter from a reader:

“My puppy is very possessive of me. I am the primary parent. I also have two other dogs, and anytime they come near me, he runs over, jumps on me and barks at them until they leave.

This also is starting to apply to people: My husband can’t come near me, and he recently nipped at my 3-year-old niece. I want to break him of this jealous behavior but don’t know how. My husband says to smack him, but doesn’t that just compound the issue? Other than this, he is a very good boy and an absolute joy to have around.”

Oh, maternal love! Its blindness knows no bounds.

If we took a poll and aimed it at the “parents” of aggressive dogs, asking why they live with a dangerous dog, the results would make for a hearty denial soup:

-- He doesn’t mean it.

-- We shouldn’t disturb him.

-- He doesn’t do it all the time.

-- He was provoked.

And the knee-jerk reaction when faced with a shy, fearful or aggressive dog is: Abuse! This dog’s been abused!

Sadly, that is sometimes true. But personality traits are sown in a number of ways, many having nothing to do with abuse. Improper socialization or a lack thereof, defective genetics and even simply being the runt of a litter can tip a dog’s personality toward the timid end of the spectrum.

The problem with leaping to an assumption of abuse is that people then believe that because a cruel human being caused the problem trait, a loving human being holds the power to reverse the effect. But all the love in the world is no match for the brute force of bad genes. Not even the love of a pet parent.

AARP: Join or Not?

It can be a bit of a shock for many of us when we reach the half-century mark and start getting the invitations to join AARP. We wonder what AARP stands for, and are a bit annoyed to learn that it stands for American Association of Retired Persons. Retiring at age 50? We’d love that, but barring a large trust fund or lottery jackpot windfall, how many of us have the luxury of retiring at that age?

A poll of people at my local senior center agrees that age 60 is when we’re likely to be more willing to flash an AARP card and ask for the senior discount. Once actual retirement arrives and budgets are tight, yes, then we'll probably want every extra benefit and dollar we can save with a senior coupon. At the same time, however, many of those discounts are available to us anyway, just for asking at restaurants and other places we spend our money.

Having said all this, the question remains: Is AARP worth joining? All things considered, I have to lean toward answering - yes. Although we often can get the same discounts they offer on our own, we can’t do all the lobbying in Washington, D.C. to help protect our interests. We

I recently talked with a young woman who just had a baby -- she’s highly educated and intelligent, with a very promising legal career ahead of her. She also lives with an aggressive dog and cannot bear the idea of losing him. I asked her what made the protection of her dog as or more important than the protection of her newborn child.

She explained that she knows what it’s like to feel unloved and unwanted, and that she loves her dog and doesn’t want to give up on him -- adding that nothing and no one loves her as much as her dog.

That’s powerful stuff.

It may be true that some will never know another love like the love of a dog. But that doesn’t excuse bad judgment.

I spoke this week with another woman, whose dog is lunging at people and dogs, has to be walked with a muzzle on, and has already been quarantined by the health department once for biting someone. And she knew he was aggressive before she brought him home. The dog wasn’t trained when she adopted him and she hasn’t trained him since. She brought home a bundle of dynamite and exposed everyone to the danger.

Now she wants to be able to take him to the dog park.

If a single person wants to live with a dangerous dog, that’s their choice. I can help modify the aggressive behavior and offer suggestions on how to create the best possible life. But there will be sacrifices. And the dog park is just one of many.

But pet parents who are also the parents of little humans are a different story -- one that can only have a happy ending if the parent protects the right child.

male. I have really been shedding the hair on my arms and legs. Is this normal for a man of my age? I have been taking hydrocodone and simvastatin, along with the usual vitamin supplements. Could the medications or supplements that I am taking have anything to do with my hair loss? Could it be my diet, or is it just old age? -- R.C.

Statins Are No Match for Cheeseburgers

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 53, and three years ago he had three stents put in due to clogged arteries. His cardiologist put him on Lipitor at 80 mg. I don’t know if this is necessary. I worry that it might do more harm than good. -- J.K. ANSWER: In people with blockages in the arteries in their hearts, there is really no doubt that medications like atorvastatin (Lipitor), a statin drug, reduce the risk of heart attack.

Although they can have side effects, for most people the benefit far outweighs the risks.

It’s important to recall that even a powerful medication like a statin can’t optimally treat people if they don’t treat themselves right. Years ago, I had a patient who was doing well after his bypass surgery and was taking a statin with good results. Walking through the hospital cafeteria, I saw him eating a triple cheeseburger (why the cafeteria even sold such a thing is a separate question), and he sheepishly argued that he was taking his statin. A statin can’t beat a triple cheeseburger.

ANSWER: Hair loss on the arms and legs is less common than on the scalp. Hormonal changes (especially thyroid and testosterone) and medications can be the culprit. A myriad of skin diseases can do it, but these usually have visible skin changes associated. Chronic swelling (edema) of the extremities might be the cause.

Simvastatin has rarely been associated with hair loss. However, when I see hair loss on the lower extremities, I worry about peripheral artery disease, which is very common and underdiagnosed. Being on simvastatin suggests that you have had high cholesterol, which is a risk factor for PAD. Having hair loss on both arms and legs, however, makes me more concerned about a systemic cause.

Looking Out for No. 1

All across the country there are veterans who might be ill and not know it. The reason: They don’t have the results of their medical tests.

If you have medical tests done at a veterans’ facility, before you leave, ask when the results will be ready. You’ll likely be told, “Someone will call you.” Get a name and write it down. Later if you start getting anxious because you haven’t gotten a call, give it one more day ... then go on the hunt.

Leave messages for your care manager, if you have one, and your doctor. Give it another day.

If you don’t hear back, try again. Call the medical facility and ask for the lab. They’re not likely to give you the results, but ask when the results were ready, and get that person’s name. That’s part of your ammo ... knowing that results were ready and when. Then call the care manager or doctor back and state that the results were ready at a certain time.

The bottom line is that you don’t stop until you have the results. Stand up for yourself and guard your health. Don’t assume that no news is good news. Be sure.

New York Importers Legacy Began in Macy’s Basement Q:

I found the porcelain plate seen in this photo in Pennsylvania some time ago.

It is decorated with scrolls of pink roses and gold trim. Four of the six scalloped edges are shaded in green and against a cream-colored background. Marked on the back in red are the letters “L-S-S -- Limoges -- France” and a green star with the words “Limoges -- France.”

I have been unable to find any information about it on the internet.

Can you help me?

H. P. Sinclaire and Company made your cut-glass vase. The factory was in Corning, New York, from 1904 to 1928.

Sinclaire began his career with T. G. Hawkes & Company in 1883. There he learned his craft as a designer and glass cutter. Eventually, Hawkes and Sinclaire became business partners until they had a parting of the ways. Hawkes preferred the cut-glass designs, and Sinclaire liked to incorporate engraving in the patterns.

H. P. Sinclaire and Company was located in Corning, New York.

Sinclaire and Company bought blanks from other manufacturers, including C. Dorflinger and Sons, and then designed and cut the patterns at its factory. Most Sinclaire pieces are signed; the signatures can be so small that they are difficult to detect. Some cut-glass historians believe the pieces that are not signed are imperfect.

Your cut glass vase was made in the early 20th century and would probably be worth $200 to $250.

The red mark was used by hugely successful importers, L. Straus & Sons, from the 1890s to the mid-1920s. Straus & Sons exported porcelain from both Austria and Limoges, France, to its New York-based showrooms. It also imported glassware and crockery. The green star mark was used by the Coiffe Factory in Limoges, France.

It produced blanks (undecorated white ware) that were often decorated by other factories.

Straus & Sons also had offices in London, Paris, Berlin and Japan.

The Straus family began selling imported objects on concession in the basement of R. H. Macy & Co. in 1873. By 1894, it was part owner, and by 1896, it had become the sole owner of Macy’s.

Your plate was made around 1900 and would probably be worth $50 to $75.
