Researchers say a tiny electric charge in microbes gets short-circuited by the high conductance of copper. This destroys the cell in seconds.

Tests by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show germs die fast on copper. Some hospitals switched to copper touch surfaces, like faucets and doorknobs. This cut the spread of MRSA and other illnesses by over half, and saved lives.

The strong scientific evidence gave inventor Doug Cornell an idea. When he felt a cold coming on he fashioned a smooth copper probe and rubbed it gently in his nose for 60 seconds.

Basic research and obedience training help tremendously. If your pup is busy obeying your Down/Stay command, he won’t be able to jump.

If he’s occupied with your Sit/Stay command, he is unable to tear out the front door and down the street as if he’s chasing tonight’s dinner across the frontier.

A child’s wading pool or a dog run can help soften the effects of the denning instinct, which, like all instincts, will be stronger in some dogs than others. And some safe and effective products are now available to help you calm Fido’s barking in your absence. The citronella collar, voice-activated and nontoxic, releases a citronella spray whenever your pooch barks. This is a decent peace-keeping option among neighbors, but should not substitute for training. Ideally, your dog is able and allowed to bark under certain circumstances. Many a barking dog has saved a sleeping human from fire, flood, natural gas leaks and the intrusion of ne’er-do-wells into the home.

Crate training teaches a pup where and when you’d like him to eliminate and prevents long-term housebreaking problems. With your diligence, your pup can be housebroken in as few as one to three days. And the natural pain of teething can be allayed with frozen washcloths offered as a chew toy in lieu of furniture legs.

We can curb canine instincts and teach them to live in our households and neighborhoods, but we can’t erase those instincts entirely. A dog will always be a dog, and our expectations should be realistic. As Henry Pockett explained to Pip in Dickens’ “Great Expectations”: No varnish can hide the grain of the wood.

Benefits for Divorced Women

All of today’s questions come from, or are about, women who are divorced. So let me make this general point first. The law says a divorced woman, who was married to her ex-husband for a minimum of 10 years, is due essentially the same benefits as a woman who is currently married to her husband. In a nutshell, that means a divorced woman can get between one-third and one-half of her ex-husband’s Social Security (depending on her age) while he is alive and between 70 percent and 100 percent of his Social Security (depending on her age) after he dies. And those benefits are NOT in addition to her own Social Security. Instead, they are offset by her own Social Security. In other words, she’d get her own Social Security retirement benefit first, and then she’d get the difference between her wife’s or widow’s rate and her own rate added to her retirement benefit.

Q:

I was married to my ex-husband for 32 years before we divorced. I understand I would be due benefits on his record if they exceed what I am due on my own. But what I don’t understand is why a woman who was married to a guy for only 10 years would get essentially the same benefit rate. Shouldn’t the benefits to ex-wives be prorated depending on the length of the marriage?

A:

First, let me verify that you are correct.

A woman who was married to her husband for 10 years (and 10 years is the minimum duration-ofmarriage requirement) would get the same benefit rate as a woman who was married to her husband for a very long time.

Now let’s think about the prorated formula you proposed. I guess part of the reason it isn’t done is because it would be an administrative and mathematical nightmare. And then, would you ever stop prorating? I mean, I could picture myself getting a follow-up email from a woman who was married to her husband for 45 years before divorcing saying: “I sure as heck better get more money than that woman who wrote to you who was only married for 32 years!”

Actually, the law used to say that a woman had to be married to a guy for 20 years before she could get benefits on his Social Security record. It was lowered to 10 years about four decades ago.

Shortly after they changed the law, I remember taking a claim for divorced wife’s benefits from a woman who was married to her ex for only 11 years. I said something like, “I bet you feel lucky that they lowered the threshold to just 10 years.” And she said, “Believe me, being married to that jerk for 11 years was long enough! I should get all of his Social Security!”

So there is that side of the argument, too.

Maybe the law should say that if you were married to a jerk, you can get his Social Security even if you were married for only a year. Of course, I’d hate to

ANSWER: It is unusual to see problems from excess zinc, but it can happen. Zinc and copper both are absorbed by the same enzyme, so with too much zinc, you can’t properly absorb copper. A student of mine published a report of someone who took MUCH more zinc than you are taking (the adequate intake per the Institute of Medicine is 11 mg, and you are taking about five times that amount; this person was taking 30 times the recommended amount), who had extraordinarily low copper levels and dangerously low white blood-cell counts.

Enclosed is a photo of a glass pedestal cake stand that originally belonged to my grandmother.

It is clear glass with a cranberr y-colored edge, and it stands about 9 inches tall.

Your pedestal cake stand was made

by United States Glass Co. It was a consortium of glass factories located in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia. You have an example of Early American Pattern Glass. It is the non-flint clear pressed glass pattern “Manhattan,” and it is decorated with a ruby-colored stain on the edge.

It was also available in clear with blue or green stains. United States Glass Co. produced a plethora of Manhattan pattern items including cake stands in three sizes, spoon holders, biscuit jars, berry sets, goblets, saltshakers, pickle castors, celery vases and tumblers. It featured these items in its 1904 domestic catalogue.

In the 1950s, Tiffin Glass and Anchor Hocking reissued a batch of the Manhattan pieces

This mark is on the bottom of a porcelain bowl that my mother’s best friend gave her for her birthday 30 years ago. Also included with the mark are the words “T & V -- Depose.” The bowl has a cream background and is decorated with red-orange poppy flowers and embellished with gold. It is about 11 inches in diameter and in mint condition.

The mark you provided was used by Pickard China in Chicago. According to The Chicago Antiques Guide Blog, the letters “T & V” represent Tressemanes and Vogt, a porcelain factory located in Limoges, France. In the early 1900s, Pickard China purchased porcelain blanks from European manufacturers and decorated them in their Chicago studio.

Pickard China was founded in the early 1900s.

Your bowl was one of the blanks. It was hand-painted with the “Poppy” pattern by Picard’s artist John Loh around 1905. Because he decorated so many pieces with the popular pattern, he became known as “Poppy John.” Pickard China is now located in Antioch, Illinois.

Your bowl was used to serve berries and is circa 1950. Small matching individual bowls were available. It would probably fetch $300 to $325 in an antiques shop. * * *
