DEAR MARY: Just want you to know that the recipe Tom offered for a homemade version of Pedialyte in a fairly recent column follows the formulation that the World Health Organization has been giving around the world for decades (minus the unsweetened Kool-Aid, added for flavor). Pedialyte is an expensive Western substitute for First Worlders who are too busy to mix it up themselves or who are used to buying everything they need over the counter. If people where I live in West Africa had to buy Pedialyte, there would be a lot more dead babies here. Keep up the good work!

This is how it works: Someone will call and pretend to be from the Social Security Administration. You’ll be told that you’re about to get an increase in your benefits. All they need to do, say the scammers, is to verify all your personal information. After all, they say, you do want to get your extra benefits, right?

You’ll be asked for your date of birth, Social Security number, banking information and more.

Armed with all this personal data, it’s easy for the thieves to have your money directed to them at a new address or bank account for direct deposit. Until your benefits don’t show up, you’ll never know that something has happened to your money.

Something to remember if you get a call that’s supposedly from Social Security: It already has all your information. It’s not likely that Social Security will ever call you anyway, but if they do, there’s no need to tell them anything.

Last week, I tried to answer as many questions as I could in the limited space I have. But I ran out of column before I ran out of queries. So this week, more relatively short and concise answers to reader’s questions.

Q:

I am 61. I plan to wait until I am 70 before I start my Social Security. My wife is 66 and already getting her Social Security. My benefit will be twice as much as hers is. If I die before I reach age 70, what will she get?

A:

It all depends on your age when you die. If you are 70 or older and getting Social Security when you die, she will start getting whatever amount you were getting, less her own benefit rate. If you die between 66 and 70 and assuming you hadn’t filed for Social Security yet, she will get your full retirement rate plus whatever “delayed retirement credits” you would have accumulated up to the month of your death. Those DRCs pay two-thirds of 1 percent for each month beyond age 66. For example, if you die on your 68th birthday, she’d get a widow’s rate of 116 percent, less her own retirement benefit. If you die before age 66, she will just get your full retirement rate, again, less her own benefit.

I don’t understand Social Security retroactivity rules. When I applied for my benefits, I wasn’t offered any opportunity to get retroactive benefits. When my neighbor filed, he was able to get six months’ worth of retroactive payments. What gives?

Lupus Is More Than a Single Disease

DEAR DR. ROACH: After having a body rash for five months, I finally was diagnosed as having subacute lupus. After searching on the Internet, I got very little understandable information. I am an 83-year-old very healthy woman. -- J.B.

ANSWER: Believe in your doctor. A persistently low PSA is very good evidence that the cancer is cured or at least staying quiet. If the PSA starts increasing (which I hope it doesn’t), your doctor will go over your options with you.

ANSWER: Lupus (literally “wolf,” as the classic rash of systemic lupus erythematosis was thought to resemble a wolf bite) is a complicated group of related diseases, including SLE (the “fullblown” syndrome, which can affect many organ systems, although itself highly variable), discoid lupus erythematosis (a skin condition that can exist by itself or as part of SLE) and subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosis, which I think you are referring to.

SCLE is a skin condition that starts as small, red, scaly raised bumps, which coalesce or form ring-like patterns on the trunk, shoulders, forearms and neck, but usually not the face. About a third of the time, SCLE is related to a medication.

Many medications are associated with development of SCLE, including blood pressure medications, some statins, omeprazole and other antiulcer and GERD medications. About half the time, SCLE occurs in combination with systemic lupus.

LONG-TERM CARE

Treatment of SCLE involves careful avoidance of direct sunlight, including the use of sunscreen and sun-protective clothing. Any drug commonly associated with SCLE should be stopped, if possible. Stopping smoking may improve the disease. Low vitamin D level often is associated with SCLE (possibly because people are avoiding sunlight), so supplementation may be necessary.

Veteran Suicides by the Numbers

The Department of Veterans Affairs has released updated reports covering veteran suicides from 1979 to 2016. The reports, which cover age group, gender, suicide rates by state and more, are must reading for those who work with veterans in mental health and suicide prevention. Ideally, this information will help gain insight into high-risk veterans and increase the support at the community level.

The VA went through 55 million records and came to these conclusions:

* The number of veteran suicides varies across the country, but generally mirrors the rate in civilian populations. Suicide rates are higher in the Western U.S. and in states with smaller populations.

* Older veterans (above age 50) have the highest rates, accounting for 65 percent.

* Veteran suicide rates are 22 percent higher than civilians. For men, the percentage is 19 percent higher and for women 2.5 times higher than civilians.

* The 20-something veteran suicides per day number is still holding. It’s just not getting better.

VA Secretary David Shulkin, however, might have pinpointed the reason when he stated that of that number of suicides per day, 14 were not under VA care.

If you’re a veteran and are having suicidal thoughts, get yourself to the VA. Do it now. You also can call the Veterans Crisis line 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at 1-800-273-8255 (press 1).

I inherited a table from my grandparents, who built a home in 1922. I assume the table was purchased at that time. It is 30 inches high, 27 inches wide and is in mint condition. I love the hardware, the detail work on the wood and especially the glass ball feet.

Lady head vases, especially the Mary Poppins vases, are collectible. Most were made after World War II and quickly grasped the fancy of consumers. Some included earrings, thick eyelashes and pearls. They portrayed the mid-20th century ideal of beauty, glamor and sophistication. Head vases were popular with florists, who filled them with flower arrangements. They were made by a batch of manufacturers and distributors including Enesco, Inarco and Lefton. Enesco was a leading distributor and importer of giftware. The Roman numbers stand for the date it was made, 1964.

Based on your photo, the wood is mahogany. Louis Frederick Enonnast immigrated to the United States from Germany, in 1865 when he was 17. He became a cabinetmaker and in 1889, he founded his furniture factory. The firm specialized in making library tables, dining tables and parlor tables. By 1900, his factory was employing 150 people. In 1914, the name became Louis F. Enonnast and Sons.
