The top of its dome- or funnel-shaped cap is densely coated with hair that is similar to the texture of felt or velvet, while the underside is covered with tiny thin cylindrical teeth, less than 0.2 inch (5 mm) long. These specialized teeth produce the spores. As the peckii grows, its delicate root-like filaments create a sheath around a tree’s roots, and the fungus trades its own minerals and amino acids for carbon from the tree, making for a mutually beneficial relationship.

• In its prime, with its distinctive appearance, the bleeding tooth is easy to spot and identify.

However, as the fungus ages, the pressure on the root eases, and the plant turns brown and unexceptional, shriveling up and shrinking, with the look of an ordinary mushroom.

• The somewhat grotesque appearance of this fungal plant puts off many, as it resembles a wad of chewing gum that oozes blood. Its fruit is a pale white color accented with pinks and reds. Bleeding tooth is just one of its nicknames, with others including strawberries and cream, red juice tooth, and Devil’s Tooth. Some say it resembles a frosted Danish pastry topped with strawberry jam. While the liquid goo on most species is red, resembling blood, some species secrete liquid that is light pink, yellow, orange, or beige in color.

• Sir Thomas Cavendish was another English explorer who used circumnavigation of the globe as a method of capturing riches. He completed his voyage in 1588, having spent two years and 49 days raiding Spanish ports, towns, and vessels throughout his journey.

One 600-ton ship captured by Cavendish was filled with gold, silk, and other treasures from the Pacific and the Philippines. He also was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I upon his return at the age of 27. Cavendish set out a few years later for a repeat of his first raiding expedition, but perished at sea at age 31.

• Captain Henry Morgan was a Welsh pirate who raided the Caribbean colonies in the late 1600s, sanctioned by England as a privateer. It’s believed he looted more than 400 ships during his career. His largest plunder was achieved in Panama City, where he captured 30 ships and 1,200 men. However, this raid resulted in his arrest and extradition to England. Yet Morgan dodged the sentence, and was instead knighted

by King Charles II, who not only pardoned and released Morgan, he appointed him deputy governor of Jamaica. Morgan lived out his days there as a wealthy planter.

Preamble to Tragedy

Often in the news there appears at least one story that prompts the question: How did this happen? Occasionally those news items are about dogs -- a dog mauled a meter maid, a family pet attacked a member of its own household, a neighbor kid was chased up a tree by the dog next door…

The following letter tells us how these stories happen, how they make it onto the front pages of our newspapers. It’s the backstory to a tragedy that has yet to occur but surely will if the people involved continue to turn a blind eye.

“Baby is my husband’s dog, meaning he had her before we were married. She was a rescue from a shelter, about to be put down for aggressive behavior. A volunteer and close friend felt Baby was being pigeonholed for being a pit bull and so took her in. When Baby did not get along with her dogs, she called my husband.

“At first Baby seemed timid, but she was very warm and loved to be petted. My husband plays with her, and she lies still to have her belly scratched by him.

“Initially, I was intimidated by her and only went around her when I was feeling confident. I did not allow my children around her at all at first -- and later only exposed them briefly and with our supervision. If the children are outside, Baby is kenneled or chained away from the play area.

“We have two other dogs: a 2-year-old male Heidelberg shepherd and a 9-year-old female SharPei. In the beginning, all of the dogs roamed the backyard, with the Shar-Pei sleeping indoors at night.

“One day during feeding, the two females fought and the Shar-Pei almost lost her life. My husband refused to get rid of Baby, stating he needed a good guard dog for our property, and that she kept our neighbors from allowing their dogs to roam the neighborhood, which he feels is more of a danger to our children.

“The second incident with the Shar-Pei really pushed me over the limit: We had been working with a trainer with both dogs for months -- Baby has food aggression, especially on hot Texas afternoons -- with muzzles and leashes and treats. The Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

What she was trying to explain to you is that you are either due your own Social Security benefit, or half of your ex-husband’s basic full retirement age benefit, whichever pays the higher rate. Currently, the maximum full retirement benefit is about $2,700. Half of that is $1,350. Your own Social Security retirement exceeds that, so that is why you aren’t due anything from your ex-husband’s Social Security account.

Or to clarify the Social Security rep’s remarks a little more, she was trying to tell you that you could only get benefits on your ex’s account if one half of his Social Security rate exceeds what you are getting. You’re getting $1,560, so your ex would have to be getting $3,120 or more before you could get anything extra from him. And since no retiree can be getting that much in just a basic Social Security check, you’re not eligible for divorced wife’s benefits.

Answers for Women About Social Security

I wouldn’t know how to go about getting accurate information about this issue, but based on the emails I receive, I’d guess that 75 percent of my readers are women. Here are some example emails.

Q:

I am 71 years old. I get $1,415 from Social Security. My rich ex-husband told me he is getting monthly benefits of $3,430.

So I should be getting half of that, or $1,716.

How come I’m not?

Q:

I am 75 years old and getting widow’s benefits from my first husband, who died many years ago. I was married a second time for 20 years to another man. He was a doctor and made millions. I divorced him because of physical abuse I suffered. He is living in a mansion in California. What I can’t figure out is why I am not getting any of his Social Security?

A:

As I explained in the answer to the prior question, that rate payable to a wife is based on the husband’s full retirement age rate. In other words, the rate he would have been due at age 66.

With a monthly benefit as high as his, I’m sure he didn’t start his Social Security checks until age 70.

And by doing that, he got an extra 32 percent “delayed retirement bonus” tacked on to his monthly checks. So I’m guessing his full retirement age rate is around $2,600. And you are due half of that, or $1,300. So the reason you are not getting wife’s benefits is because your own $1,415 rate exceeds your spousal benefit rate.

And frankly, I doubt if “every woman” you know is getting half of her husband’s Social Security. Statistics show the majority of women start taking benefits before their full retirement age, which means most women are getting less than the 50 percent spousal rate.

Q:

I always earned more money than my husband, so now I get a higher Social Security benefit than he receives. Someone told me that if I die first, he won’t get anything extra from my account because only women can get widow’s benefits. Is this true?

A:

Well, technically it’s true that only women get “widow’s” benefits. But a man, including your husband, would certainly be entitled to “widower’s” benefits. The eligibility rules for widows and widowers are the same. So if you die first, your husband will keep getting his own retirement benefit. Then he will get the difference between your rate and his rate in the form of widower’s benefits added to his Social Security check.

Q:

I just turned 62. My ex-husband says I should take reduced spousal benefits on his record now and then at age 66, switch to 100 percent of my own Social Security.

How do I go about doing that?

You’re not getting any of his Social Security because he’s not dead -- yet. (I’m not trying to give you any ideas.)

If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan (MAPD) and have not reviewed your specific plan(s) with your agent, you may be in for a shock in January when you visit your pharmacy to pick up your medications and learn that they may not be covered anymore or at the amount you used to pay! OR, what if you go to your primary care physician only to discover he/she is no longer in your plan network! Don’t get caught with the possibility of this happening to you!

Enclosed you will find a photo of a toleware dinner pail that was given to my mom by one of her friends in Maine many years ago. It is in good shape, and the cup on the top is still with it. The overall height is 12 inches including the handle, and the diameter of the base is 6 inches.

What can you tell me about the histor y and value of my toleware dinner pail?

A:

Toleware refers to tin pieces that are usually black and hand-painted with flowers or shapes. The word is based on the French words “tole peinte,” which mean “painted metal.” The craft, tole painting, began in Europe in the 18th century and quickly spread to the United States.

Some of the most popular pieces include dinner pails, trays, coal bins, candlesticks, document boxes, lamps and coffee pots. The dinner pails with matching cups were often used by either coal miners or railroad workers.
