• The discovery of radium in 1898 sparked a radioactive health craze. Here was an interesting glow-in-the-dark phenomenon, popularized by an educated woman named Madame Curie and her husband Pierre, whose research confirmed that the substance could, among other things, destroy cancer cells. The public was dazzled.

• What transpired on the unregulated markets of capitalism was a worldwide industry of radium quackery. Soon radium-based products of every kind were available to the public: Radium-laced cosmetics claimed to smooth your skin. Radiuminfused blankets reportedly eased arthritis.

Radioactive pendants helped with rheumatism and radium-laced pills aided digestion.

• In New Jersey, William Bailey called himself a doctor though he never studied medicine. He started producing radium-infused water in 1918, which he bottled and sold as a miracle cure-all.

Called Radithor, it was prescribed by doctors to cure everything from gout to baldness. It sold for $1 per bottle ($15 in today’s currency), and Bailey offered doctors a 17% kickback on every prescription they wrote for Radithor.

Chase Coleman’s character might be dead, but his career is very much alive -- and churning full speed ahead. Since ending his tenure on the hit supernatural CW series, Chase has worked on a number of projects, including the David Duchovny series “Aquarius” and tons of shorts, movies and miniseries. Those of you who’ve attended an “Originals” fan convention will know that Chase is a talented musician, Chase Coleman and he and his band Mercy Mode are currently touring.

Chase’s current passion project is “Cypress Bayou,” which is being shopped around to various networks. Chase compares the series to “’True Blood’ mixed with ‘True Detective’ mixed with ‘The Vampire Diaries.’ Maybe even a tad ‘Game of Thrones’ because it’s very character-driven -- there are lots of different families and houses in this small town.”

Chase can’t wait to get this series to the masses, and I can’t blame him after he told me what it’s about: “I play the leader of the garou, which are werewolves. My family’s been cursed to where we would become creatures on the full moon and terrorize the town. But then this family of good witches took pity upon us, and while you can’t cure the curse, you can tweak it. Once we were able to control our shifting, we became protectors of the town.”

Are You Encouraging Your Dog’s Problem Behavior?

Not to wag fingers instead of tails, but the vast majority of dog problems are actually people problems. The dog’s doing the misbehaving, to be sure, but odds are the owner either created or encouraged the behavior without even realizing it.

People who feed their dog at any time of the day or night and in every room of the house teach him that the dinner table is you and dinnertime is all the time. Essentially, they are teaching their dog to beg. Inevitably, they come to regret it.

Adult dogs that develop the destructive habit of chewing usually do so out of either boredom or frustration from inappropriate confinement. A bored dog will chew to expend pent up energy that would be better relieved through exercise. And a dog left alone for hours in a small room behind a closed door will chew to escape. Again, problem behaviors caused by owners who lack a basic understanding of their dog’s needs.

Dogs who jump on furniture are usually dogs who are invited to sleep in the bed with their owner. How is he to know that the bed is OK but the couch is off limits?

Dogs who jump on people can ultimately be traced to owners who reward the behavior -- if only sometimes -- because they think it’s cute. But a dog who is encouraged to jump on his owner when his owner is in a playful mood can’t be expected to know not to jump on his owner or anyone else when they aren’t in the mood.

Of course, there are problem behaviors and then there are problem behaviors.

Biting behavior, for example, often starts with an owner who literally inserts his hand in his dog’s mouth during the course of play, essentially teaching the dog to bite. Excessive authority or dominance and abusive punishment on the part of the owner will also create a dog who bites and growls out of fear.

Dogfighting is an unpleasant and sometimes frightening behavior that, at its core, boils down to an instinctive need to defend territory. The Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

(She’d get an extra 32 percent tacked on to her monthly Social Security check.) It’s just that she won’t get anything on your record in the meantime.

I took my Social Security at age 66. I have a 49-year-old wife who is a stayat-home mom and a 15-year-old son. They both get benefits on my record. I was told my wife’s benefits will stop when my son turns 16. Why?

A:

The law says a young mother’s benefits stop when her child turns 16. I’m sure the law assumes that once a child reaches that age, the government no longer needs to provide child care support to the mom. That’s the bad news for you.

But the good news is that because of those family maximum rules I’ve been explaining in this column, the money amount you get each month won’t change. Frankly, there really was no point in having your wife on your Social Security account in the first place because she and your son are simply splitting the benefit he normally would have received on his own. So when your son reaches age 16 and your wife comes off the beneficiary rolls, your son will simply get the full amount they were getting together. * * *

Enclosed you will find a photo of a pair of porcelain vases that belonged to my grandmother. They each stand about 9 inches tall and 5 inches wide, and they are in mint condition. The front of each is decorated with a different scene of young women in robes. The back has small roses against a white background. Both the handle and rim are trimmed in gold. Marked on the bottom is the word “Austria” and a beehive.

I would never part with my grandmother’s vases, but I would like to know any information you can provide about their histor y.
