Recently, I inherited a new-to-me iPhone 6. It’s lovely. I’m grateful, but I didn’t really need a new phone. My venerable iPhone 5c suited me ® just fine.

TRADE IT IN

Both Apple and Amazon have trade-in programs. Instead of paying out in cash, payment is made via gift cards.

Apple: I input all of my data at https:// www.apple.com and discovered I could trade in this phone in exchange for $55 worth of credit in a store or a $55 Apple gift card if I decided to mail it in.

Amazon: Amazon has an online trade-in program for all brands of cellphones. After inputting the details of my iPhone, I received an offer of a $50.05 Amazon gift card for my phone.

SELL IT

Gazelle: The folks at Gazelle, who have an aggressive program for buying not only cellphones but also other electronics have offered me $45 for my phone. Reviews for Gazelle’s service are excellent on ResellerRatings.

Decluttr: This online company, with whom I have done business in the past, also buys and sells used cellphones, electronics, DVDs, CDs and books. It has offered me $51 for my phone.

Violence: This group recycles cellphones to raise money to support programming that helps stop violence in the home.

Cell Phones for Soldiers: This organization is dedicated to providing cost-free communication services and emergency funding to activeduty military members and veterans. Since 2004, Cell Phones for Soldiers has recycled more than 15 million cellphones, reducing the impact on landfills.

KEEP IT

Though the phone has no data plan and cannot be used as a phone, it is still a functioning device. It still works as a camera and it connects to Wi-Fi, which means my young grandsons can play with it. In an emergency, it could make a 911 call.

So, having considered my options, I’ve decided to sell the phone to the company with the best offer -- Decluttr. I have done business with Decluttr in the past and found them to be easy to work with. I followed the instructions exactly (easy). I got a check in the mail in record time. And now I look forward to a repeat performance with this phone.

Glyde: As a seller, I would list my phone for sale on Glyde. When it sold, Glyde would send me a shipping kit containing a pre-addressed postage-paid envelope to use to send it in. Glyde collects the sales price from the buyer, takes a cut of that sales price as a commission and forwards the balance to me. Glyde estimates that my iPhone 5c would sell for $86, of which my portion would be $70.10.

AUCTION IT

EBay: Though there are tons of iPhones available for sale, I am surprised these phones don’t fetch more on eBay. I can view completed transactions for many 5c phones, and though it’s impossible to say what mine would sell for here, it’s easy to see the range of what I could expect.

My best estimate is that I might be able to net $40 to $50 if I hit it just right.

Craigslist: Listing my iPhone here would expose my iPhone to a wide range of potential buyers. However, I would have to field the calls and appointments. It’s impossible to predict how much I could get for this phone here.

DONATE IT

There are a number of charitable organizations that accept the donation of cellphones in exchange for a tax receipt, which would allow me to deduct its fair market value when I itemize my federal tax return.

Several years ago the American Film Institute debuted its 100 Series, part of which heralded the Top 100 quotations from American cinema. “If you build it, he will come,” from the 1989 film “Field of Dreams,” made the cut.

Most of us know the quote as, “If you build it, they will come.” But in both the film and the novel it is based on, W.P. Kinsella’s “Shoeless Joe,” it is “he” and not “they” who will be coming. And its altered form suits human nature just fine, particularly human dog owner nature.

If you love them, they will obey.

If you feed them, they will listen.

If you bring them into your home, they will do whatever it is you ask of them, even if you ask them in a language they don’t understand.

These are statements of blind faith. Dedicated dog lovers seemingly extend this benefit of the doubt to any and every dog, making the collective “they” more reflective of our faith in the species than the singular “he.”

Either way, it’s just not true.

Frustrated dog owners lament, “He wants to do what he wants to do!”

Well, yeah.

Good-hearted people truly believe that if you love a dog and feed a dog and offer a dog a comfy place next to you in the “big person” bed, the dog will crumble, will cave in regard to his own instincts, will knock it off with the chewing and the digging and the fence jumping and the puddles.

But alas, a dog is a dog -- and thank goodness for that! Understanding your dog’s inherent dogness, knowing that his view of the world from two or three feet off the ground is much different from ours, is, to quote another from AFI’s Top 100, “the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

Humphrey Bogart, who famously delivered the line above in the final scene of “Casablanca,” knew a little something about the benefits of dog training. In the 1941 film “High Sierra,” Bogie’s character’s dog, “Pard,” is played by Bogie’s reallife dog, Zero. Who among us could call on our dogs to perform on command amid the chaos of a film set?

When to Actually File for Social Security Retirement Benefits

day of the same week, I had received a message from SSA that my claim was done. My wife’s claim took about 10 days. (By the way, we did all of this online.) And my neighbor said he filed his claim in person at our local Social Security office. It was processed in less than two weeks.

Even though SSA handles retirement claims rather expeditiously, they still advise filing two to three months ahead of time -- just in case there is some kind of glitch. So because you are turning 66 in December and want your benefits to start then, I suggest starting the process in October. You can file online at www.socialsecurity.gov.

Or you can call SSA at 800-772-1213 and set up an appointment to file a claim by phone or in person at your local Social Security office.

For some reason, I have been getting an awful lot of questions lately from seniors who are fretting about exactly when to sign up for Social Security benefits.

I’m not talking about people who are undecided about when to start their benefit checks -- I have written countless columns discussing that.

I’m talking about people who have decided when they want their retirement benefits to start but are concerned about when to initiate the process.

Other times, they are needlessly worried that they will make a big mistake and lose untold amounts in government benefits. Here are some examples of those questions.

I will be 66 on Aug. 25. That’s when I want my Social Security checks to start. Recently, I began the process of signing up for benefits online. But I was confused by a statement that was filled with a lot of legal language about the importance of using July 24 (the date I went online) as the “official date of my application.” I’m afraid that if I consent to using that date, they will send me a check for July. I don’t want benefits to start in July, which would involve taking a reduced retirement rate. I want my full 100 percent retirement benefits to start in August. Please help!

But the application isn’t asking you which month you want your first check physically sent to you (or rather, sent to your bank account). It’s asking you which month you want your benefits to start. And for you, that would be August.

I didn’t want to say August, because I want nothing reduced. As I am not 66 until near the end of the month, I figure I should say I want my checks to start in September.

Social Security checks are never prorated. So that’s good news for you. Even though you are 66 for only three days in August, you get a Social Security check for the whole month. So you should indicate August as the first month you want to start your Social Security benefits.

I will be 70 in September. I am going to sign up for Social Security then. I want my full benefit, plus the 32 percent bonus I get for delaying my benefits. I’m really afraid that if I apply now, they might send me greatly reduced benefits. Should I wait until after my 70th birthday to file?

How to Stop Unwanted Junk Mail and Guard Against Mail Fraud

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: My elderly father gets over 100 pieces of junk mail every week, and I just discovered that he’s given away nearly $5,000 over the past year to many of the solicitors that mail him this junk.

He is a very kindhearted man and, unfortunately, an easy target for just about every organization that asks for donations to their cause.Can you offer any tips on how can I stop this and keep people from taking advantage of him? -- Irritated Son

Dear Irritated: Millions of older Americans get bombarded with unwanted junk mail these days, including “mail fraud” schemes that you and your dad need to be particularly careful of. Here’s are some tips that may help.

Mail Fraud Alert

While junk mail comes in many different forms – credit card applications, sweepstakes entries, magazine offers, coupon mailers, donation requests, political fliers, catalogs and more – the most troublesome type is mail fraud, which comes from con artists, whose one and only purpose is to take your money.

Mail fraud can be tricky to detect because there are many different types of schemes out there that on the surface seem perfectly legitimate. Some of the most common mail scams targeting seniors today are phony sweepstakes, foreign lotteries, free prize or vacation scams,

Hot Chocolate Set Is a Sweet Heirloom Q:

Enclosed is a photo of a porcelain hot chocolate set that belonged to my grandmother. It has a chocolate pot, five cups and five saucers. The sixth cup and saucer were broken a long time ago. Each piece is decorated with a white background, apple blossoms and gold trim. The pot stands 9 1/2 inches tall, and the base is 5 inches in diameter.

Marked in blue on the bottom of the pot, cups and saucers is the word “Nippon” and an image of the rising sun.

What can you tell me about my hot chocolate set?

Your stein was made by Albert Jacob Thewalt Factory. It has made steins and giftware in Hohr, Grenzhause, Germany, since 1893. Objects marked “Western Germany” were made between 1949 and 1990. After World War II, Germany was divided into sections. West Germany was occupied by the United States, Britain and France. East Germany was occupied by Soviet Russia. The wall came down in 1990.

Thewalt produced stoneware steins that were often decorated with drinking scenes or pastoral scenes. In the mid-1940s, there was a renewed interest in beer steins, and the market rose among beer stein aficionados.

The Nippon rising sun mark was used from around 1891 till 1921.
