• Daffodils are also known as paperwhite, jonquil, and narcissus, and are members of the amaryllis family. The word “narcissus” has its origins in the Greek language for “to benumb,” referring to the narcotic properties of this plant.

In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a beautiful youth who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool, and pined away, unable to leave the beauty of his reflection. According to the myth, the gods turned him into a flower. Narcissus lent his name to the word “narcissism,” a vain fixation on one’s own physical appearance and abilities.

• Although there are close to 60 different species of wild daffodils, at least 13,000 types have been created through selective breeding, with more being created every year.

Squirrels know better than to eat daffodil bulbs because of the poisonous crystals, but the bulbs shouldn’t be planted if you have a dog who likes to dig.

• Because of the toxic sap in the stem, daffodils shouldn’t be arranged in a vase with other flowers unless the daffodils have been soaked in water for 24 hours. Re-cutting the stems will cause a re-release of the toxin. Florists often have an allergic reaction to the flower called “daffodil itch.”

• It’s odd that although the stem and bulb are toxic, another substance found in the bulb called narciclasine has been shown to have potential for treating breast cancer. In addition, an alkaloid known as galantamine found in daffodils is proving effective against the symptoms of Alzheimers Disease. Even the ancient Romans cultivated daffodils for the sap they believed had healing properties. Ancient Egyptians used the juice of the wild daffodil as a cure for baldness. It’s not known whether or not it worked.

• Although daffodils have been cultivated since ancient times, the name was not recorded in print until 1538. In 1623, William Shakespeare mentioned daffodils twice in Act 4 of his play “The Winter’s Tale.”

• The daffodil is the national flower of the country of Wales, and the Welsh people wear a blossom on Saint David’s Day, March 1. Welsh legend claims that if you spy the first daffodil of the season, the coming 12 months will be filled with wealth. To these folks, it symbolizes new beginnings. The wedding cake of Britain’s Prince William and Kate Middleton featured 17 different kinds of flowers, one of which was the daffodil.

I’ve been accused

by Mary Hunt of thinking I have an answer for everything (you know who you are, my dear husband), and that kinda makes me laugh because I have to admit that maybe I do think that. I do love to reach into my inbox to find so many letters from my readers.

Truth be told, when you send questions to which I do not have reliable answers, I set them aside pending further research. They say that teaching teaches the teacher, and I couldn’t agree more!

Pour solution into a spray bottle each time you clean the floors. Or, if you make it ahead, of time, be sure to label it well and keep it out of the reach of children.

To use: Sweep or vacuum the floor. Spray the cleaner in a small area Scrub well with a cloth or sponge. Immediately wipe the area dry with a microfiber cloth. It’s not just talk; it’s definitely happening.

More than 30 years after Ralph won the Under-18 AllValley Karate Tournament, he’ll be back in the dojo as Daniel LaRusso in 2018 for YouTube Red’s “Cobra Kai.” Daniel’s archenemy, Johnny Lawrence (with William Zabka reprising his role), has reopened Cobra Kai dojo in his quest for redemption. The 30-minute comedy received a straight-to-series order for 10 episodes from the online streaming network, placing it in the big leagues with other streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.

Executive producers Josh Heald (“Hot Tub Time Machine”), Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (both of “Harold and Kumar” fame) also will write the script. Read between the lines: Her dog is getting older, and she’s anticipating the pain she’ll inevitably feel when he passes. It isn’t uncommon for people to get a second dog to ease that sadness.

And it isn’t necessarily a bad idea. Necessarily.

The good:

-- Bringing a puppy into the house can have a rejuvenating effect on the older dog. Puppies are playful and silly, and their exuberance is contagious.

-- Young and old dogs can bond, giving the older dog a renewed sense of purpose.

-- The dog owner will not have to endure the heartbreaking quiet of a home that used to house a dog.

-- Another dog finds a loving and permanent home.

The bad?

There could be no downside whatsoever. In this case, however, the woman who called wanted a second dog, but her husband didn’t. Neither babies nor dogs make good Band-Aids for a marriage.

When I asked her why her husband didn’t want another dog, she told me it was because they’d never trained the one they have now, who is a bit of a mischief-maker. In fact, he had recently devoured a child’s plastic toy, landing him in a veterinary hospital and saddling them with a surgery bill for $8,000.

Hubby has a point. It can be hard enough -- and expensive enough -- to live with one untrained dog. Add a new puppy to the mix and you might as well issue a standing invitation to the Hell’s Angels





Think You’re Too Old for a Pet? Fiddlesticks!

One of the saddest things I’ve overheard lately was a woman who had just lost her very senior cat. She had loved that affectionate old cat for almost 20 years and it had been a wonderful, loving companion for her.

She would have made a great candidate for another lonely animal from the local shelter that needed a kind and caring owner. But instead she hesitated, afraid she herself might die before the cat did, and then the cat would go back the shelter and possibly be put down.

I hope there aren’t many of us who feel that way and harbor such thoughts. Shelters are full of cats and dogs that need a loving home, and seniors can be the best pet owners that the shelters can hope to find.

Consider what a cat or dog can do for us.

If we have a dog, it needs to be walked at least once a day. That’s needed exercise for us, too, and often has other benefits, too. For example, it can lead to more social interaction as we meet up and chat with others who are doing the same thing. Maybe a daily pet-walking group will develop in the neighborhood.

Another factor to consider is that your dog may not want a “friend.” Not all dogs enjoy the company of other canines. They are pack animals, yes.

But at the age of 8, this particular pooch’s pack has been established. If he views himself as the pack leader -- which is entirely possible since he was never trained -- he will defend that position when the other animal is brought home. And if the new pup is also of an alpha mindset, well, you’ll find yourself reminiscing on how peaceful your time with the Angels really was.

On the other hand, if you bring a new dog into a household where it is deeply entrenched that you, the dog owner, are the pack leader, then there is very little need on either dog’s part to fight over a position that is already filled -- by you.

I ended our conversation with one last bit of advice: If you insist on getting a second dog, make sure you don’t end up with two female dogs in the house.

“But I don’t like males,” she said.

And I couldn’t help but wonder whether she meant two-legged or four.

Any pet needs regular meals and water, and maybe even medication if you adopt one with special needs. That keeps us on track with a daily schedule. Cats and dogs can be comical, keeping us entertained and making us laugh.

Just having a pet around to interact with and care for has been proven to be invaluable in reducing stress. Cats need to be brushed every day and generally love that bonding time. Dogs usually love to go to the groomer, if you can’t do it yourself.

If you hesitate to have a pet now because it might outlive you, make arrangements in advance. Prisoners Do NOT Get Social Security Q:

I was in my local Social Security office recently. While I was sitting in the waiting room, I noticed a pamphlet on a table that was titled, “What Prisoners Need to Know about Social Security.” If we are handing out Social Security checks to deadbeats sitting in prison who already get free room and board supplied by taxpayers, no wonder the system is going broke!

A:

I’m not really sure why that specialized Social Security Administration publication was lying around in an office waiting room. Still, had you bothered to pick it up and skim it, you would have learned that Social Security benefits are NOT payable to people who are in jail or prison after being convicted of a crime.

Before I explain the rules in more detail, I’m going to give a short history lesson. Also, I must stress that for much of this column, I will be referring to money paid by the Social Security program, usually either retirement or disability benefits. Near the end of this column, I will briefly mention the rules for the Supplemental Security Income program. Now for that history lesson.

For the first half-century or more of the program, people who were getting Social Security benefits who ended up in prison still got their checks

while they were incarcerated. I’m sure the thinking many prisons that would have younger convicts was this: These people worked and paid taxes and believe that as soon as they are released, they can earned their Social Security benefit, so they should waltz into their nearest Social Security office and get that earned benefit no matter where they lived sign up for Social Security disability benefits and have those checks start flowing into their bank ac-- even if that was behind bars.

Carnival Glass Inspired By Tiffany

This is a photo of a berr y bowl set.

It was a gift from a dear elderly lady to my pastor father-in-law about 45 years ago. It is purple and includes a large berr y bowl and four individual ones. Each piece is footed and has blue glass balls. The set is in mint condition.

What can you tell us about the maker, age and value of our set?

You have a carnival glass amethyst berry set by Fenton Art Glass Company. Frank and John Fenton founded the factory in Williamstown, West Virginia, in 1905. It made custard glass, chocolate glass and clear pressed glass. In 1908, it introduced carnival glass. The process involved firing

an iridescent finish on pressed glass.

Many have called it the “poor man’s Tiffany.” It gave the average homemaker an opportunity to purchase iridescent glass. Pieces were often given away as prizes at carnivals, hence the name. Fenton was the first to make carnival glass, followed by Northwood Pottery, Imperial, Millersburg Glass Co. and Dugan.

When it comes to determining value, color is key. It was available in marigold, amethyst, green and blue, marigold being the most common. The diamond pattern with floral centers appears to be inspired by embroidery. The saw-toothed edges, beaded webbing and scales are all characteristics of the “Fentonia” pattern. There was a variation of the pattern known as “Fentonia Fruit.” Between 1905 and 1911, a plethora of patterns was made by the factories that produced carnival glass.

Your berry set would probably fetch $225 to $250 in an antiques shop.
