• The total eclipse portion of the moon's shadow will begin its 70-mile-wide swath at 10:16 a.m.

PDT, starting at the Pacific coast of Oregon. It will pass southeastward for some 2,500 miles crossing 12 states in its path, allowing tens of millions of Americans to view the eclipse in its totality. At any given location along the path, the total eclipse will last only a minute or two. However, the period when the Sun is only partly obscured will take much longer.

• Tobacco is a member of the nightshade family of plants. Other plants in the same family also contain nicotine in lesser amounts, including tomato, potato, green pepper, and eggplant. You would have to eat about 20 lbs of eggplant to equal the amount of nicotine in one cigarette.

• The nicotine produced by the plant acts as an insecticide, killing bugs that eat the leaves. It was once used as a pesticide on crops, but was outlawed due to the fact that it poisons mammals.

Nicotine alone is quite poisonous. Just 30 - 60 mg of pure nicotine (a single drop of pure nicotine in liquid form) is deadly if ingested instead of smoked. But whereas a single cigarette contains 10 mg of nicotine, most goes up in smoke, with only a single milligram inhaled by the smoker.

• In humans, nicotine releases adrenaline and dopamine. It takes only 7 seconds for nicotine to hit the brain when inhaled. Nicotine is more addictive than alcohol, marijuana and cocaine.

DEAR MARY: I’m a happy user of the Eufy Cordless HomeVac you recommended.

I love it, especially since we have a cat that tracks litter all over. This vac works for so many medium and lightweight uses (toast crumbs, scattered litter, dirt tracks, a fast buzz around the dining table, etc). In fact, we have hardwood floors and use this vacuum 90 percent of the time. It is so lightweight and portable compared with our more heavyduty vacuum. Also, I’m amazed how long the charge lasts. It maintains its full charge and is ready to go, even when it is not used for a week after the charge. It’s definitely a winner!

There are some things that look pretty easy, yet only a select few of us are able to do them. How many of these “tricks” can you manage?

• Raise one eyebrow. It’s the universal facial expression of skepticism, but not many people can do it without a fair amount of practice. If you’re interested in training yourself to cock an eyebrow, start by looking in a mirror, raising both your eyebrows, and then lowering just one of them with your hand.

Now let go and lower the other brow. Do this a few times to learn the correct muscle movement necessary for eyebrow control.

• Lick your elbow. It is possible, believe it or not, though it helps to be unusually flexible.

In fact, there are enough people on the planet that can lick their own elbows that the folks at the Guinness Book of World Records get several calls and emails per day regarding this feat. If you can’t do it, great, but we don’t suggest forcing your joints to bend in ways they don’t want to. (Why dislocate your shoulder if you don’t have to?)

• Touch your nose with your tongue. This trick depends entirely on genetics – some of us can do it, and some of us can’t, no matter how hard we try. To see if you’ve got what it takes, stick your tongue out straight, making a point with the tip. Now stretch your upper lip down so that it covers your upper front teeth. Push your tongue upwards with your lower lip while curling the tip of it toward your nose. Difficult, isn’t it? (Thankfully so!)

• Sneeze with your eyes open. This isn’t exactly a “trick,” but a reflex that is controlled by the brain. Most people close their eyes when they sneeze. Those that don’t are simply lacking the necessary reflex. We have no conscious control over the(continued): situation.

Doggy Dangers

Most dog owners know to keep the pooch away from chocolate. But what other doggy dangers lurk in and outside of the house?

Some hazards are obvious: household cleaners, pesticides, rodent poisons, bug sprays, insect repellants, paint, paint thinners and art supplies, cosmetics, pool chemicals, drain clearers, fertilizers and detergents, as well as electrical sockets, cords and wires.

Others tend to fly under the radar.

Batteries, for example, might not raise a red flag. But batteries are bite-sized! Swallowing one whole may or may not be a major problem. But chewing a battery to the extent that its corrosive fluid leaks out could be a painful event that leads to serious health concerns for the dog. In this the era of technology, a household without batteries is unimaginable. So the best solution to this problem is prevention: the safe and secure storage of all batteries and any chewable objects they power.

The fridge is a glowing Pandora’s box of items both delectable and dangerous for your dog.

Chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, is high on the list of foods that are off-limits to your dog. Others are:

-- Raisins and Grapes: Even in small numbers, raisins and grapes are toxic and can induce kidney failure in dogs.

-- Garlic and Onions: Depending on the dose, the ingestion of onions and garlic can create a life-threatening form of hemolytic anemia in dogs.

-- Mushrooms: Sure, some mushrooms are harmless. But many species of mushrooms are harmful to dogs and can cause toxic shock and death. Unless you are a professional mycologist, don’t take any chances. Keep your dog away from all mushrooms. This includes “backyard” varieties, which should be plucked.

-- Macadamia Nuts: If your dog consumes macadamia nuts, he might luck out with some minor gastrointestinal upset. But these nuts can also cause lethargy, muscle tremors and stiffness, and bladder stones.

-- Avocado: At the center of an avocado sits a large pit that looks suspiciously similar to a ball.

I discussed this issue about six months ago.

But for some reason, my email inbox continues to be crammed with questions from older folks who say they are planning to move overseas and want to know what happens with their Social Security benefits once they pack their bags and head to some exotic foreign locale.

Maybe some people are starting to make good on their pledges to leave the country if Donald Trump was elected president. Or perhaps others see some of the same websites I do that entice you with headlines similar to this one I recently read: “Live like royalty on your Social Security check in Thailand!”

Anyone planning to do that needs to read a booklet that the Social Security Administration produces called Social Security -- Your payments while you are outside the United States. You can find it online at SSA’s website. Just click the “Publications” link near the bottom of the homepage. Once there, pull down the “Topics” menu and you’ll find the booklet under the “General Information” section.

By reading that publication, you will learn that if you are a U.S. citizen, the rules are pretty simple.

You can get your Social Security benefits almost anywhere in the world. The Treasury Department doesn’t allow any federal government checks to be sent to North Korea or Cuba. And there are Social Security restrictions that prevent benefits from being sent to Vietnam and most of the republics that formerly made up the Soviet Union (places like Belarus, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, etc.). There are some exceptions to those Social Security restrictions, if any of those remote places are beckoning you in retirement.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, but you have lived in this country legally and worked and earned Social Security benefits, then the rules get a little more complicated. I will briefly explain some of them.

If you are citizen of one of the 23 countries that have Social Security treaty agreements with the U.S. (they are listed in the aforementioned booklet), then you also can get your benefits anywhere in the world -- with the same restrictions that apply to U.S. citizens outlined above. You’ll find the list of countries on page five of the booklet. The list includes most European countries as well as places like Israel, Australia, Japan and South Korea.

Page six of the booklet has another list of countries. If you are a citizen of one of those countries, you can get your Social Security benefits while living outside the U.S., but only if you are receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits. If you get Social Security dependent or survivors benefits, then the rules really get messy -- way too complicated to explain in the short space of this column. Please refer to the booklet.

Tracking Osteoporosis Through Testing

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have mild osteoporosis in one area. I was on Fosamax for seven years. I have been off for two years.

My doctor is suggesting I go back on Fosamax. Your thoughts on treatment in my case?

-- A.B.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been advised that Medicare will cover the bone density test only every two years. If that’s true, why? -- A.L. ANSWER: Osteoporosis is loss of bone minerals and strength. There are at least two ways to measure changes in bones, whether as an age-related drop in bone density and strength or as an increase in response to treatment. One way is to measure the bone density via an X-ray (DEXA). The other is a urine test, N-telopeptide of collagen (abbreviated NTX), which looks at net bone loss.

ANSWER: MiraDRY is the brand name of a microwave device designed to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). This is a condition of abnormal, drenching sweat that greatly interferes with social activities. It is not normal underarm sweating. It is currently used only for underarms -- not hands, feet or face, the other most common places for localized hyperhidrosis.

According to several published papers, the microwaves heat up the water in the sweat glands, destroying them, while the skin itself is cooled. The published success rates (at reducing sweating to “never noticeable” or “tolerable”) are very high, as are patient satisfaction results. Side effects included swelling, redness and temporary numbness.

This is a new procedure, but it appears to have promise in the treatment of excess sweating. I also found a very helpful website at www. sweathelp.org.

LONG-TERM CARE

DEXA correlates well to fracture risk, but it changes very slowly. In fact, it changes so slowly that a repeat test within two years usually reflects variability in the test itself rather than an actual change in the bone, which is why most insurance companies -- and, yes, Medicare -- will cover the test only every two years.

Some experts believe that measuring NTX is a useful way of measuring the effectiveness of treatment, such as with a medication like Fosamax. Further, although the optimum duration of treatment for osteoporosis isn’t clear, five years is commonly used (as it sounds like is the case for A.B.).

‘Taps’: Do You Have What It Takes?

Gettysburg National Cemetery has held the One Hundred Nights of Taps since Memorial Day. The observance will conclude September 4th.

Every night at precisely 7 p.m., a bugler plays “Taps” at Soldier Monument. Buglers have ranged from 11 to 82 years of age and have come from all over the country. The one thing they have in common is a desire to play “Taps” to honor those who have served our country.

While it’s great that 100 people are coming together for this months-long effort, every day there are military funerals across the country where no bugler is available. In those cases, they must resort to recorded “Taps.” That’s legal ... but far from ideal.

There is an answer: Bugles Across America is a volunteer effort begun in 2000 for the sole purpose of providing live buglers to play “Taps” at military funerals, instead of a recording.

Do you play trumpet? Do you have what it takes to be a bugler at a military funeral? Can you play the 24 notes of “Taps” in a dignified way, as it was written? This mark is on the back of a porcelain plate that was among my great-grandmother’s things. No one in our family knows what its purpose is. It is about 8 inches in diameter. It has seven depressions, one of which is in the center. The outer edge is scalloped, and it is decorated with pastel flowers against a white background.

We hope you can solve our myster y and tell us something about its value.

Jug Is a Cut Above

Q:

This is a photo of a cut glass tankard that we have. It is in ver y good condition. It has a scalloped saw-toothed edge and a notched handle, and it stands 6 inches tall.

After closely examining it for the maker’s signature, we found it on the bottom. The mark is less than 1/2 inch in diameter and includes the words “J. Hoare and Co. -- Corning -1853.”

You have a Victorian oyster plate. The six wells/depressions are for serving six oysters, and the one in the center is for dipping sauce. It was made by Victoria Porcelain Factory in Altrohlau, Austria. It was in business from 1883 to 1945. The mark you provided was used from 1891 to 1918.

J. Hoare & Co. was located in Brooklyn and Corning, New York, from 1853 to 1920. The company was founded by Irish immigrant John Hoare. It created complex and intricate patterns on lead hand-blown and pressed glass blanks. Some of the designs used on the cut glass were hobstars, crosshatching, fans, flat stars, Gothic arches and crescents. You have a jug rather than a tankard, and it was used for serving milk. It was made during the Brilliant Period of American cut glass. At the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, American cut-glass companies ushered in the innovative geometric cut-glass patterns. The fans, crosshatching, star, serrated/saw-toothed scalloped rim and notched handle are characteristic of the Brilliant Period. Lead that was used in cut glass was needed for ammunition for World War I, and the period came to an end by 1917.

At the equator, Earth is moving at 1,040 mph. But 40° north of the equator, which is in the middle of the U.S., Earth is spinning at only 790 mph. An umbra traveling at 1,100 mph at the equator would be moving at 5,000 mph near the poles. The closer to the equator an observer is located, the longer the eclipse typically lasts. The umbra will be moving at nearly 3,000 mph on the coast of Oregon, but only about 1,500 mph over Kentucky.
