The good news is that most IHSS clients can hire, fire, and supervise their own care givers under the Independent Provider (IP) mode of service. Most IP’s are relatives of the client. In other words, that means that IHSS will pay your son or daughter for your care-giving. Or, better yet, you can hire outside care so your son and daughter can “visit” rather than “care-take.”

To be eligible for IHSS, a person must be enrolled in Medi-Cal. Individuals who receive Medi-Cal with no share of cost (SOC) will also be entitled to IHSS with no SOC. Individuals whose income is too high to qualify for IHSS with no SOC may still be eligible for IHSS and Medi-Cal with a SOC. To apply for IHSS, you can call or visit your local Department of Social Services to complete an application. Once IHSS receives your application, a social worker will come to your home to conduct a needs assessment. During the needs assessment, the social worker will ask questions about your physical and mental capacity to determine the type of services you need.

Finally, during the needs assessment, if Grandma proudly puffs out her chest and says, “I don’t need any help,” you’re not going to get any assistance. If there is any appropriate time for Grandma to complain, this is it. The more total monthly hours that are approved, the greater the chance that Grandma can remain at home safely for as long as possible.

My wife and I are both on Social Security and Medicare. Her Medicare card has my Social Security number with a “B” after it. When I die, I know she will get widow’s benefits. But will she continue to get Medicare on my record?

A:

Yes, she will continue to get Medicare on your record. The only thing that will change is that she will get a new Medicare card, still with your Social Security number, but this time with a letter “D” behind it.

The Medicare people simply use the Social Security claim number as your Medicare number.

Currently, your wife is claiming benefits on your account. “B” is the symbol the Social Security Administration uses to denote wife’s benefits. When you die, your wife will be claiming widow’s benefits on your record. And “D” is the symbol SSA uses for widow’s benefits.

Enclosed you will find a photo of an antique red glass Christmas ornament. It is 3 inches in diameter and lined with silver.

It weighs 1 pound and was made in Germany.

There is an embossed brass top with a loop for hanging. It is not just any ornament; it is an heirloom that has been passed down through our family from my great-grandparents who came from Germany around 1872. I’m sure there were more, but they were likely broken by my grandmother’s siblings over the years.

I know it probably isn’t worth much, but just learning about its histor y and value means a lot to me.

William Maddux founded Maddux of California in 1938 in Los Angeles. In the 1940s, a plethora of small, often family-owned potteries were launched in Southern California. Due to importing restrictions during World War II, department stores became dependent on giftware made in the United States. In the 1950s, imports were flooding the U.S. once more. The abundance of post-war imported inexpensive giftware forced many potteries out of business.

Maddux of California made pottery from 1938 to 1980.

Maddux of California produced giftware, florist containers, decorative figures, gardenware, birds and TV lights. In 1947, it was making at least 120,000 pieces. The number “59” represents the year 1959, when your planter was made, and “149” is the design number. Antelopes, gazelles and deer were favorite motifs of the potteries. Maddux of California lasted longer than many of the potteries.

It closed in 1980.
