WOODSTOCK (from page one) Woodstock Ventures and their seedy workers out of town.

• While the sudden change caused utter panic for Woodstock Ventures, it also generated enormous amounts of free publicity that attracted nation-wide curiosity and interest in this upcoming rock festival.

• Enter Max Yasgur and his dairy farm outside the nearby town of White Lake. He offered green fields, hundreds of acres of sloping land, and a lake. Yasgur asked $75,000 to rent the property, and got it. Adjacent farm land was also rented for parking lots and campgrounds at exorbitant fees far greater than what the land itself had been valued by a local realtor.

• The White Lake town council approved the permits but later did a turn-around, just as Wallkill had done. Only days before the concert, they said that although they had approved the permits, they had not yet actually issued them. They claimed that they still retained the right to cancel the event, which they attempted to do.

• But by this time, the enormity of the situation was already at an unstoppable momentum.

The “Stop Work” orders posted on fences and poles around the site were torn down as fast as they were put up. The nearby town of Bethel, population 3,900, was utterly overwhelmed with the workers and curiosity seekers that

Celebration heals. According to a study on organ donations by Dr. Robert Emmons, the more gratitude a recipient of an organ feels, the faster that person’s recovery. There were 74 transplant recipients of either a heart, liver, lung, kidney or pancreas who participated in the study. Those recipients who expressed gratitude, whether directly or indirectly, by journaling, felt physically better and functioned at a higher level than those who did not.

Looking at the calendar, it’s easy to see natural reasons to celebrate -- Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s. So pull out all the stops. Celebrate!

But don’t let your celebrations end there. Look for every reason imaginable to celebrate: the first day of summer, last day of autumn, the first snowfall, the shortest day of the year, a child’s progress report, the 100th day of the school year, birthdays, anniversaries, Mon., significant milestones 4/22/2017 and important events.

In their book “Why Good Things Happen to Good People,” authors Stephen Post and Jill Neimark tell us that celebration is one of the most important ways that we express gratitude.

The ridiculously popular fantasy/time-travel/historical-fiction drama will return to Starz for 13 all-new episodes starting Sunday, Sept. 10. This third season will follow the events of the third book in Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series, “Voyager.”

As we closed out season two, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) had returned to the 1940s in order to save the life of her and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) unborn baby. With the Sam Heughan in “Outlander” help of her daughter, Brianna, and family friend Roger Wakefield, she learns that Jamie did indeed survive the Battle of Culloden, and she vows to return to him.

What’s even better is that while the book kind of glossed over the Battle of Culloden, we get to see the war spectacle in all its muddy and bloody glory. ***

More Widows ... More Questions

Perhaps I’ve opened the floodgates? I’ve written a several columns over the past month or two discussing Social Security widow’s benefits.

But it seems the more explaining I do, the more questions I get! So, once again, more questions from more widows:

Q:

Here is something I cannot figure out. Why am I getting so much more in widow’s benefits than I am due in my own Social Security? I will admit that my husband had a well-paying job and I did not. But he died at age 42. I worked until I was 62, albeit at a middle-income job. My widow’s benefit is $2,675. My own retirement benefit is only $1,790. I paid into Social Security for a much longer time. So why isn’t my benefit higher than my husband’s benefit?

A:

I can understand your confusion. You would think that because you paid into Social Security for at least 20 more years than your husband, and that he died more than two decades ago when earnings weren’t as high as they are today, that your own benefit rate would be higher. But your widow’s rate is more because of the way those benefits are figured.

Your retirement benefit is based on your average income using a 35-year base of earnings. And the more years that are used to compute a benefit, the lower that benefit is going to be. For example, if retirement benefits were based on your average income over just the last three years, that would produce a much higher benefit than if 35 years are used. Or to put that another way, the more years of earnings used from so long ago when you were in your 20s and 30s and probably not making as much as you are now, the lower your overall average income will be and the lower your Social Security retirement benefit will be.

But in your husband’s case, his Social Security record was essentially closed on the day he died. So instead of using 35 years, they only used about 20 years of earnings to figure his benefit. And like the earnings used in your retirement computation, all of those 20 years of earnings he had were indexed for inflation.

You said your husband had a well-paying job. And all of those high earnings he had translate into a high Social Security benefit. And now they translate into a widow’s benefit that is higher than your own Social Security check.

Q:

I am 73 years old. My husband died late last year. After he died, my own $968 retirement benefit stopped and I started getting what he was receiving when he died. I get a widow’s check of $2,147 per month. So I’d like to know: Where did my money go?

A:

You’re still getting it. Because you see a deposit of $2,147 per month in your bank account, you may think you are just getting straight widow’s benefits off of your husband’s record. But what is actually happening is that you are being paid from both your own and your husband’s Social Security account. Or to put that another way, you are getting $968 in your own retirement benefits. Then they are adding $1,179 in widow’s benefits from your husband’s record to take you up to his $2,147 rate.

Strange Dreams?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 90 years old and take many medications. I am having many different dreams at night. Can medications cause this? -- A.C. ANSWER: Pretty much whenever I get the question, “Can medications cause this?” the answer is “yes.” In your case, it’s very clear that some medications cause unusual dreams in many people who take them. Antibiotics, antidepressants, blood pressure medications and even sleeping medications can cause remarkable dreams. Some people hate this side effect; others enjoy it. Knowing that medications could be causing them often is a source of relief.

I would caution you not to stop your medications suddenly or without talking to your doctor. You should go over your list of medicines and try to discover which are the most likely to be the source. Sometimes, a medicine can be stopped if the dreams are very bothersome.

Although some early studies did link cycling with testicular cancer, most authorities now believe there is no such link. In fact, regular exercise reduces risk of both testicular and prostate cancer. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 73 years old, with osteoporosis and scoliosis. Can scoliosis be corrected? -- W.E.W. ANSWER: Osteoporosis is loss of strength of the bones, and scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. They may or may not be related. The osteoporosis should be treated, but the scoliosis usually does not need to be treated.

Muscle strengthening exercises are important, and braces and injections may be used. Surgery is reserved for very severe cases, particularly in adults.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old man who likes to ride his bicycle for exercise. I ride on paved trails and streets, approximately 10 miles at a time with an eye on extending the length of my rides. I own a road bike, but currently I ride a bike that provides a more upright seating position. In either case, the seat is narrow and firm. My body is in a forward-leaning position while riding.

Somebody’s going to prison, and I’m cheering. A Missouri woman enrolled as a financial fiduciary through the Department of Veterans Affairs stole $38,000 from a disabled veteran she was supposed to help, and she did it shortly after she was appointed to the role and discovered all that back pay in his account. Not only did she fail to maintain records and reports, she stonewalled even after being faced with VA Office of the Inspector General auditors who demanded explanations and accounting for the funds.

Eventually she pleaded guilty to one felony count of embezzlement and faces up to 10 years in prison, as well as a $250,000 fine and required reimbursement of the money stolen. We’ll know in September how the sentencing goes.

The VA’s fiduciary program was set up a long time ago to help elderly veterans who were unable to handle their finances. At first, someone would be appointed. Then the VA started paying 5 percent of the veteran’s benefits as a fee. That brought out the scammers in the form of allegedly professional fiduciaries who quickly learned to rig the system and steal from the veterans they were supposed to protect.

In 2014, the VA OIG conducted an investigation and concluded that more than $944,000 had been funneled away from veterans. In addition, in some areas of the country, complaints against fiduciaries in the program were not quickly and properly investigated.

Despite the past problems, if you suspect any form of fiduciary abuse, call the VA Fiduciary Program at 1-888-407-0144. Or call the VA at 1-800827-1000.

The Fiduciary Program will investigate and decide if misuse of funds has occurred, and if it did, the VA will try to replace the missing money. It also will get the OIG to pursue a criminal investigation.
