SUPER CUBE. This is a crazy simple tip, but it works for me. I love ice-cold water and must have it at all times. However, at work the water is just cool, not the icy deliciousness I crave. I solved this issue by taking a bottle of water slightly less than half full and laying it down sideways in the freezer. (We are lucky enough to have two refrigerators in our break room.) Later, I grabbed the frozen half bottle and filled it up with water. Voila! Ice-cold water for several hours. I just keep filling it up until its time to get out another one. Just make sure not to put too much water in the bottle, or when it freezes you won’t be able to fill it with much water. -- Laurel

STICK WITH REGULAR. Most gas stations offer unleaded premium for 10 to 12 more cents per gallon more than unleaded regular.

Many customers think they’re giving their car some kind of extra care or treat by filling up with what they think is the best. Don’t do it. Virtually all automobiles run just fine on regular unleaded, so unless your owners manual specifically states that your car requires a premium grade of gas with higher octane, save your money and stick with regular. -- David

LEVEL PAY. After consulting my yearly budget, what I’ve done with my electricity and heating bills is to pay the same amount each month. Because I live on a fixed income, I send each of those utility providers a flat $100 per month. This means I purposely overpay for heat in the summer when the furnace is not in use and overpay the electric company in the winter when I’m not running my central air conditioning. I’ve been doing this for years. No big bills in the summer for the electric; no big bills in the winter for the heat. This takes the mystery out of my budget and works quite well for me. -- Pam

Eclipses • The Chinese have recorded solar eclipses since 720 BC, giving us a partial historical record dating back 2,700 years. The Mayans, Sumerians, Egyptians, and Chinese were each able to work out the formula that predicted the next eclipse. When there is an eclipse of the Sun, there will be another eclipse exactly 18 years, 11 and one-third days later. That eclipse will follow a parallel path exactly one-third of the planet away from the first eclipse, starting at sunrise and ending at sunset. If the first eclipse was a total eclipse, the next eclipse will also be total. If the first was a partial eclipse, the following will also be partial. This Saros cycle repeats itself for about 1,300 years before petering out.

Next up for the prolific actress is EPIX cable network’s “Graves.” Juliette has been cast in a recurring role in season two. In the series, Nick Nolte plays President Richard Graves, a former two-term POTUS who embarks on a Don Quixote-like quest to right the wrongs of his administration and reclaim his legacy decades later.

In this coming season, President Graves turns inward in search of the man he used to be before he was president. His journey is compounded Juliette Lewis by the arrival of his first grandchild, as well as a new revelation about his son, Jeremy. Graves’ journey coincides with wife Margaret’s (played by the stellar Sela Ward) Senate campaign, as the former first lady attempts to build her own political legacy. Isaiah Miller, the president’s assistant, searches for new direction after taking a bullet for the president in the season one finale.

Meanwhile, Graves’ spiritual muse, Samantha (Callie Hernandez), finds a new calling as a singer/ songwriter. And Juliette comes aboard as Bailey Todd, a hard-living, leather-clad, tell-it-like-it-is music manager and producer out of New York who shows up at Samantha’s trailer with the idea that Samantha might have what it takes to be the next big thing. ***

He is 73. He started his benefits at age 70.

He gets $2,850 per month. So now I’d like to cancel my retirement claim and then file for wife’s benefits. I understand I can get half of his, or $1,425. Can I do this? And how do I do this?

A:

Well, yes you can do this, although not at quite the money amounts you think. And you really should think long and hard before jumping on this maximizing bandwagon. I mean, you and your husband are already getting over $5,000 per month in Social Security benefits. That is far more than the average Social Security beneficiary can even dream about. But if you are intent on squeezing every last nickel out of your Social Security piggy bank, here is what you should do.

Make an appointment to talk to someone at your local Social Security office. Tell them you want to withdraw your retirement claim. (You have up to 12 months after your benefits start to do that.) You will have to repay all the benefits you’ve already received. That sounds to me like you’ll be writing the government a check for $22,250.

After you withdraw your retirement claim, you will then turn around and file a claim for wife’s benefits on your husband’s account. But you won’t get half of his current benefit. You’ll only get half of his full retirement age rate. I’m guessing that’s about $2,150. So your share of that is $1,075. You can claim up to 6 months’ worth of retroactive spousal benefits.

Once you make that switchover, you will keep getting $1,075 per month, until you turn 70.

At that point, you would refile for your own retirement benefits, and get 132 percent of your basic rate, or about $2,900 per month. Good luck with all that!

Both my wife and I are about to turn 62. We went to a seminar about maximizing Social Security benefits. I was told that I could file for husband’s benefits on my wife’s record and then save my own until age 66. But the Social Security people said I can’t do that. Are they right? We are worried that we are missing out on Social Security benefits that ever yone else is getting.

The Social Security people were right. If you are under your full retirement age, the law says you must file for your own retirement benefits. And the loophole mentioned at the beginning of this column, the one that let people 66 and older file spousal benefits while delaying their own benefits until 70, closes before you reach your full retirement age.

So now you and your wife simply have to make one of three Social Security decisions. Do you want reduced retirement benefits at 62, or some other age between 62 and 66? Or do you want full benefits at age 66? Or do you want to wait until age 70 and get 132 percent of your full retirement age rate? * * *

Enclosed is a photo of a stoneware milk pitcher. I would like to learn about its histor y and value. As you can see, there is a hole on one side and a hole with a slot on the other side. This was for a lid, which I do not have. Marked on the bottom are the words “Lovatt -Langley Mill- England -- Leadless Glaze -- 1 Q.” The pitcher is decorated with a cobalt blue and tan finish, daisies and a brown handle. Except for the Lovatt Pottery was in business from missing lid, 1865 to 1982. it is in ver y good condition.

What can you tell me?

Your coffee pot was made by A. Lanternier & Co. in Limoges, France. Frederic Lanternier established a porcelain-decorating company in 1855 in Limoges. It developed a hugely successful decorating business and exported large amounts of tableware.

His son, Alfred Lanternier, joined the company in 1887, and the company name was changed to A. Lanternier. They bought a large factory and began producing porcelain doll heads. In 1918, they started making porcelain tableware, coffee set and tea sets. In 1925, they presented porcelain at the Paris decorative arts exhibits and were awarded the grand prix. They also entered porcelain pieces at the 1931 Paris Colonial Exhibition. A. Lanternier & Co. merged with GDA in 1960.
