• Eleanor championed civil rights causes while she was First Lady. She attended the Southern Conference on Human Welfare in Alabama in 1939. When she found that the audience was segregated, with blacks on one side and whites on the other, she protested by putting her chair into the center aisle that separated the races.

• While entertaining some Russian dignitaries, Eleanor took them to see a Fourth of July parade. The Russians were accustomed to seeing great displays of military strength during their own parades. They named the boy Sequoyah, and he grew up to become an accomplished hunter. However, an accident rendered him lame, so he turned his attention to more sedentary pursuits. He married a Cherokee woman, had children, and became an accomplished silversmith and a talented blacksmith.

• When he served as a soldier during the War of 1812, he noted that the soldiers around him were able to read letters from home, write to their sweethearts, follow written military orders, exchange news, and read books, all by using the white man’s system of “talking leaves.”

He thought that the Cherokee nation was at a great disadvantage because they had no written language. After learning to speak and write several languages, he started thinking about his native tongue, Cherokee.

• Sequoyah’s entire tribe was eager to learn these new written markings, and soon were able to read and write their own language. As a result, the history, culture, and spiritual practices of the tribe were preserved.

• By 1828 the tribe was publishing the “Cherokee Phoenix,” the first national bi-lingual newspaper, and the first Indian newspaper printed in the U.S. Later they started printing religious pamphlets, educational materials, and legal documents as a way of making an income.

• Shortly afterwards, when Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Act of 1830 demanded that Muscogee, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations relocate, Sequoyah was forced with the rest of his tribe off their ancestral homelands in the Southeast onto a reservation in Oklahoma.

Over 4,000 people died of starvation, disease, and injury along the route they called the “Trail of Tears” during their forced migration.

• Sequoyah eventually constructed a cabin for himself near present-day Sallisaw, Oklahoma, which still stands and is open to the public.

I guess it’s just a sign of the times we are living in. But I am amazed by the number of emails that I get from elderly seniors, folks in their 70s, 80s and even 90s, who are hoping to get higher Social Security benefits. Today’s column highlights some examples.

Q:

I am 82 years old. My wife is 78. I get $1,478 from Social Security. My wife gets $766. We started my Social Security at age 65. My wife took hers at 62. I have always been convinced that we are getting the wrong Social Security amounts. I think we should be getting more. Is there anything we can do to get our Social Security checks adjusted to the proper amounts? And shouldn’t my wife be getting more benefits on my record?

A:

Sorry, but there is nothing you can do about changing your own Social Security benefit checks. I have a hunch that I don’t really need to tell you that the time to question your benefit rate is not 20 years after those benefits began. You should have done so back when your Social Security checks first started.

But I can tell you this. Every study I have ever seen shows that the Social Security Administration has a remarkable record of accuracy when it comes to figuring retirement benefits. It’s something like 99.8 percent. I hope you are at least able to find some comfort knowing that it is extremely likely that you are being paid correctly.

And based on what you told me, it doesn’t sound like your wife is due anything extra on your account -- at least while you are alive. Many people are under the mistaken impression that a wife is always due an amount equal to half of her husband’s benefit rate. But she is due half only if she waits until her full retirement age to start her benefits.

Because she took her own Social Security at 62, those benefits could only be supplemented up to about one-third of your rate. That would be about $485. Her own benefit of $766 is much more than the $485 she is due in spousal benefits. That’s why she only gets her own retirement check.

And just so you know, if you die first, she will be due your full $1,478 in widow’s benefits. Or to put that another way, she will keep getting her $766 retirement benefit, and then she will start getting an extra $712 in widow’s benefits to take her total Social Security up to $1,478 per month.

My wife and I went to a seminar about maximizing our Social Security benefits.

But we left even more confused than we went in. We are so worried that we are losing out on money. Here are our facts. I am 72. My wife is 71. I took my benefits at 66. My monthly check is $2,445. My wife filed when she was 62. She is getting $1,488. What can we do to maximize our benefits?

umns, I think you should count your blessings. You and your wife are getting about $4,000 per month in Social Security benefits. There are millions of other senior couples out there who would love to be getting that much money.

I am 72 and have been getting Social Security for 10 years. My wife just turned 70. When she filed for benefits at age 62, the Social Security rep said mine was $50 more than my wife’s own retirement, so he just gave her mine. Now that she is 70, can my wife switch to her own benefits with the bonus that people get for delaying their benefits until that age?

A:

The Social Security representative is correct. The fact that you are getting such a big civil service retirement pension precludes you from getting any spousal benefits from Social Security.

Can Magnesium Pills Help Control A-Fib?

DEAR DR. ROACH: Ten years ago, I had many episodes of rapid heartbeats, diagnosed as atrial fibrillation. My cardiologist put me on a medication, which I took for a couple of years, but the A fib came back. The doctor changed my medication to sotalol, but that didn’t help either.

I read that low magnesium could be a cause of atrial fibrillation, and I started taking calcium, magnesium and potassium, and have not had an episode of rapid heartbeat for four years. I went back to my doctor, who told me it was a crazy idea. I haven’t seen him in four years. It seems a shame that we hear of so many treatments for A fib when it might be stopped with a simple supplement. -- S.Z.

Many people wrote that a physical therapist (and perhaps an occupational therapist as well) would be important, and I fully agree. I have found physical and occupational therapists to be among my most treasured but underappreciated colleagues, and almost always, they are able to improve people’s function.

Other suggestions included looking for low oxygen levels, and checking whether the blood pressure drops too much upon standing. One person wrote in to note that walkers and wheelchairs can decrease activity and lead to loss of strength and balance. Another recommended looking for hidden infections, such as in the urine. These should have been checked for.

ANSWER: Well, it certainly isn’t a crazy idea, but low magnesium isn’t the only cause of atrial fibrillation, and supplementing magnesium and other electrolytes will not stop atrial fibrillation in most people. However, low blood magnesium levels are a recognized risk factor for developing atrial fibrillation, and giving magnesium during heart surgery reduces the risk of developing A fib afterward in some (but not all) studies, so there certainly is something to it. Also, oral magnesium can make other medications for A fib work more effectively.

Since oral magnesium is safe and cheap, I think it is reasonable to try.

However, I am concerned because atrial fibrillation can go on in some people without their being aware of it, and the major risk of A fib is blood clots. I would recommend that you continue to get evaluated periodically to make sure your heart rate is persistently normal. I also would try to find a physician who is willing to work with you on combining “alternative” treatments like magnesium with traditional therapy if needed.

The State of the VA

Department of Veterans Affairs chief David Shulkin gave a 100-days State of the VA address, and he was candid about the problems with the VA and the hopes of correcting what needs to be fixed.

What’s concerning is that there have been 137 different assessments and studies about what’s wrong at the VA. It seems that somewhere along the line, officials should have just grabbed one assessment and started to fix whatever it pointed out, instead of letting 137 of them stack up.

One area of concern is access: how fast veterans can get an appointment. At this point, at all of the VA’s 168 medical centers, veterans can get in the same day for primary and mental-health care. Outpatient facilities don’t fare as well. And wait times and follow-up appointments have been, and continue to be, a major problem.

The Choice Program was heavily pushed as a way to get faster medical care for veterans, but those civilian medical providers are not getting paid on time and they’re leaving the network. Some $50 million worth of bills are still outstanding, being six months or older. It doesn’t help providers when the contract has been amended 70 times. Because of confusion on both sides, 20 percent of the bills are rejected outright.

Fourteen VA medical centers have one-star ratings, which means a lower quality of care than is available in nearby local hospitals.

As Shulkin said, some of the problems at the VA have been going on for decades. His honesty is refreshing -- and necessary. One area where Shulkin’s goals are going to meet reality is in the time it takes to process disability claims. I wish him well with this and all of his intentions, but the truth is that the claims processing-time goalpost has been moved back many times over the years. * * *

Cut Glass Set Is a Notch Above

Q:

I have enclosed a photo of a cut glass sugar bowl and cream pitcher set that I bought at a yard sale for $2. They are both about 3 inches tall, and they have sawtoothed edges and notched handles. They are in perfect condition. I think I got good buys.

Can you tell me anything about the set, its origin and value?

Q:

I have a large family and love to give antique Victorian baby cups to the new babies. But there is a problem. Some of the beautiful engraved cups have the words “Quadruple Plate” marked on the bottom. Unfortunately, they have a black lacquer-like finish that I have been unable to remove, despite tr ying many solvents. Why would the Victorian silversmiths have covered four coats of beautiful silver plate with a black finish?

It would be great if you could solve this for me.

A:

Standard plate pieces were electroplated with 2 troy ounces of pure silver. Quadruple plate pieces were electroplated with 8 troy ounces of pure silver. That means silversmiths used four times the amount of silver that was used on standard plates. It doesn’t mean four coats of a black finish were applied to the silver. Evidently, the silver plate has been worn away over time and you are seeing the base metal. * * * The Brilliant Period of cut glass began in the late 1800s.

Antique cut glass was created by artisans on blanks. They cut intricate designs using special tools. Cut glass was produced over 3,500 years ago in Egypt, and it was first made in the United States around 1771. After the 1889 Paris Exposition, the industry exploded with unusual intricate designs. The Brilliant Period of cut glass lasted from the last quarter of the 19th century to the beginning of World War I. First Lady eagerly took on the responsibility of decorating and furnishing the mansion with the enthusiasm and energy she was known for.

She was a congenial hostess who held many White house social events, many of which were mixers that brought political parties together in a relaxed, informal atmosphere that opened communications and broke down walls. She was also the only First Lady given an honorary seat on the floor of Congress.

• While she enjoyed an honorable reputation as the most flamboyant and popular First Lady to have occupied the White House, her bestremembered contribution was her selfless decision to preserve an irreplaceable icon of America's heritage.

• In August of 1814 when the War of 1812 had grown to full-blown conflict, Dolley was by herself with her staff in the White House while her husband was away for meetings with his military leaders. British troop advancements were making fast progress and had now overtaken Washington, looting and burning the city as they marched toward the Presidential mansion.

• With the enemy now on the horizon and knowing she had to get out of there fast or be taken prisoner, Dolley grabbed up as many documents and other important items as possible before she left. But she also did not want the large eight-foot oil portrait of George Washington to fall into British hands, so she ordered an aide to quickly take it down. But in the midst of the chaos, the aide wasn’t able to loosen all the screws that fastened it to the wall. So Dolley told him to use a kitchen knife to quickly cut the canvas out of the frame, roll it up, and get it out of there as fast as possible. She firmly instructed him to destroy the painting if his capture was imminent, knowing that the British would take great delight in mocking the picture of America's first President and triumphantly parade it in victory through the streets of London. The aide followed her orders and quickly escaped with the precious goods in hand. Dolley fled soon after, leaving the Madison’s personal belongings behind.

• Although the White House and all the contents that hadn't been looted were burned to the ground, the painting survived the war and remains today as one of the best revered icons of our American heritage, all thanks to the heroic act of one brave and determined First Lady.

It can be quite difficult to make breaking putts where you have to aim more than a foot to the left or the right of the hole. It’s partly a guess on the line to take and then how hard to hit it on that intention. While many golfers will say that speed is everything, you’ll need a proper mix of line and speed to make those putts.

When practicing larger breaking putts, try laying down a half dozen balls in a pattern illustrated below. Start with the actual ball to be hit, but then place balls progressively from the hole backwards. You’ll focus on how the ball enters the hole, how much it may curve at the end of the putt, and visualize how the entire putt would look before you hit it. This illustration will give you a better understanding of line and speed that you need to guess on for that putt. There is no perfect combination, but keep in mind “higher and softer” usually results in less three putts from short range.
