I love to travel, which has become one the best unintended consequences of my life as a writer, speaker and blogger. Travel always involves challenges. That’s why®I have adopted an attitude that no matter how well I’ve planned, if

by Mary Hunt it probably will. And if it something can go wrong, doesn’t, I consider that a travel bonus.

Over the years, I’ve collected a bunch of really great travel tips -- some fun, some crazy, but all very useful, if only to avoid a headache or two.

ROLL; DON’T FOLD. Instead of folding your clothes, roll them tightly. They’ll take up less space in your luggage, and that can save you from having to pay extra baggage fees.

SCAN EVERYTHING. Before you leave, scan the front and back of every item in your wallet, including your passport. Email the images to yourself. Now you’ll always have a digital copy handy, in case you lose something. This will not be a substitute for your passport, ID or credit cards, but you’ll have all of the pertinent information you need to keep going.

HAND-WASHING. Need to wash underwear or other clothing items? Shampoo is the perfect substitute for detergent. It’s great for getting out a grease spot, too. After all, that’s what shampoo is made to do -- remove grease from hair.

TRAVEL SAFE. A travel mug makes a great travel “safe.” If you must leave small valuables in your hotel room, pop them into the mug.

It will be fairly inconspicuous and an unlikely target for thieves.

SIGN THE DOOR. When you leave your hotel room, even if for just a few minutes to get something to eat, place the “do not disturb” sign on the door. It will appear to housekeeping and others that you are in the room for as long as the sign remains. This adds a layer of security should you leave your computer or other valuables in the room.

ALWAYS COMPARE. When booking air travel, always use a flight-comparison website.

There are several, such as Skyscanner and Kayak. These sites help you find the best airline and cheapest price for your dates and routes. But do not book your flights through these sites. Instead, delete your browser history, and then book

Netflix recently announced a premiere date for the third season of the sitcom redux of the late-1980s/early-1990s family sitcom hit. The first part of the 18-episode season will drop Friday, Sept. 22, which also happens to be the 30th anniversary of the series’ original premiere date on ABC. (If you don’t want to do that math, that was back in 1987.) The second part of the season will premiere sometime in December.

Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber all Candace Cameron Bure will return, and I’m sure we’ll get a Bob Saget and/or John Stamos appearance here and there. You can stream seasons one and two now on Netflix if you need to catch up or refresh your memory before September.

I am so excited to report that a follow-up movie to the hugely popular “Downton Abbey” series is officially in the works. Michael Edelstein, president of NBC Universal International Studios, told The Associated Press at the opening of “Downton Abbey: The Exhibition” in Singapore that the film has been in the works for some time, adding: “We are working on getting the script right, and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the [cast] together. Because as you know, people go on and do other things. But we’re hopeful to make a movie sometime next year.”

Sophie McShera, who played Daisy, told the AP: “We would all love to be part of the film if it [were] to happen, for sure.” And Laura Carmichael, who played Lady Edith, added: “We’re hoping that will happen soon.” ***

Noncompliance, according to the following letter from a hotel manager, brings the promise of fewer hotels that will extend an invitation to your pet.

“Dear Uncle Matty: I read your column regularly and love your common sense approach to responsible pet ownership.

“Speaking as the office manager of a small boutique motel, I wonder if you would address being a responsible pet owner when traveling with your dog. Our policy is: Dogs up to 20 pounds are allowed, there is a $10 pet fee, dogs are never to be left alone in the room, and they are not permitted in our two log cabins or the fenced pool enclosure.

“One of my two biggest pet peeves is people You read it show up with their dog and neither who simply in tidbits! inquire about our pet policy nor tell us they have a dog with them. When people reserve one of our cabins, which sleep eight, they are told that pets are not permitted in the cabins. Study: Mild Exercise Just Won’t Cut It

Some of us suspected it was too good to be true: that engaging in some form of mild exercise of any type was good for us and helped us live longer. A new study shows that, unfortunately, the too good to be true part may just be the case.

New research out of Brigham Young University (published in Preventive Medicine journal) shows that we can slow the type of aging that happens in cells if we do intense, vigorous exercise. (Not what I had in mind -- how about you?)

To quote from one of the study’s principals: “The more physically active we are, the less biological aging takes place in our bodies.”

Specifically, the study talks about telomeres. As we age, there is less telomerase in each cell, which counteracts the shortening of telomeres on our chromosomes. In other words, without that telomerase, they wear down and cells wear out. High-activity exercise levels can give up to a nine-year biological-age advantage; moderate exercise nets us seven years. Mild exercise produces considerably less.

Translated into real terms, it means that to achieve a significant increase in longevity women need to engage in physical cardiovascular activity at least 30 minutes a day. That’s five days a week. For men it’s 40 minutes of cardio activity for those five days.

Social Security Laws Are NOT Changing Constantly

ex -- but again, only if that 30 to 50 percent spousal rate would pay more than your own benefit.

Earlier, I mentioned that there is one exception to the fact that Social Security rules haven’t changed in more than 30 years. That exception is the loophole that I’ve discussed over and over again that allows some seniors to collect spousal benefits while delaying their own retirement benefits until age 70. But that loophole is being closed in a couple of years. In a nutshell, the loophole says that if you will turn 66 before January 2020 and if you wait until age 66 to file for benefits, you can claim 50 percent of your spouse’s PIA (assuming he or she has filed for his or her own Social Security) and then, at 70, switch to 132 percent of your own retirement PIA.

Benefits for widows (and a few widowers) are another big part of Social Security that has not changed in decades. To avoid a lot of “his/her” and “he/she” pronouns, I’m going to address this part of the column to women because statistics show that more than 90 percent of survivor benefits are paid to women. Having said that, Social Security rules are gender-neutral, so if you are involved in a marriage in which the wife made more money than the husband and thus gets a higher Social Security benefit -- and if the wife dies first -- the surviving husband could get widower’s benefits.

Anyway, in most cases, a husband dies first -- and usually after both he and his wife have been getting Social Security for a while. In other words, they are in their 70s, 80s or beyond. When that happens, the widow will almost always start getting what the husband was getting -- less her own retirement benefit, if she is getting one.

If the husband dies while his wife is in her early to mid-60s and before she has started collecting her own Social Security benefits, then she has some options. For example, she could start out collecting reduced widow’s benefits and then, at 66, switch to 100 percent of her retirement PIA, or she

could wait until 70 to make the switch and then collect 132 percent of her PIA. Sometimes (depending on the money amounts involved), it works better for the widow to take reduced retirement benefits and then, at 66, switch to a full widow’s rate, i.e.,100 percent of her deceased husband’s PIA.

The earliest a woman can start widow’s benefits is age 60, when she would usually get about 71 percent of her husband’s PIA. In rare cases, a disabled widow can start getting a benefit as early as age 50. A widow, no matter what her age, with minor children at home can collect up to 75 percent of her deceased husband’s PIA.

The other major part of Social Security is disability benefits. The rules for those benefits also haven’t really changed in three or four decades. But that program is way too complex to even summarize at the tail end of this column. I have explained the rules for disability benefits in many past columns and will certainly do so again in a future column.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A few years ago, despite regular use of sunscreen, I noticed a couple of small, dark patches on my face. I began using a product that contained 2 percent hydroquinone, which the package says is a “targeted skin lightener.” The problem is, those dark patches haven’t changed at all, except that they are a lot bigger. My questions are: Is this product really effective?

Would my skin discoloration be even worse if I hadn’t used it? Does the product perhaps make the problem worse? Finally, what is your recommendation for treating skin discolorations? -- N.C.

Antique ABC Plates Appealed to Victorians

I am interested in learning the value of this plate. I was told it was my grandfather’s baby plate. He was born around 1885. It is decorated with the alphabet on the right-hand side and two birds setting on a branch on the left. Below the branch are the words “Chaffinch -- Goldfinch.” The plate measures about 7 inches in diameter and is in mint condition. Marked on the back are the numbers “Rd. No. 154.”

Your child’s ABC plate was made by Brownhills Pottery Co. It made earthenware from 1872 to 1896 in Staffordshire, England. It made a series of ABC plates decorated with transfer prints that were often finished with handpainted tints, as well as matchAntique ABC plates appealed to Victorian tastes. ing cups.

The plates featured several themes including the alphabet, Bible scenes, Aesop’s fables, wild animals, nature, famous places and nursery rhymes.

The plates were designed to appeal to Victorian sensibility. They informed, entertained and amused children. The number “Rd. No. 154” indicates that the design was registered with the British government in 1884.

Chaffinch is the name of a bird in the European finch family. It is blue-gray with a rust-red body. The European goldfinch has a black-andwhite head with black wings. It was frequently included in Renaissance paintings of the madonna and child.

Brownhills Pottery ABC plates are sought after by many collectors. Your plate is circa 1884 and would probably be worth in the range of $150 to $275.

Jaeger & Co. was founded in Germany in 1872.

It soon started producing its own tableware, tea sets, coffee sets and giftware. The factory flourished, and by 1930 it employed around 500 people. World War II was devastating to the company, and it never recovered.
