Dentistry seems to be an ancient profession! Archaelogists have discovered a human jawbone dating back to the Stone Age that contains a dental filling. MARIE CURIE (from page 2)

By Samantha Weaver

 It was noted American poet Ogden Nash, best known as a composer of droll verse, who made the following sage observation: “Some tortures are physical / And some are mental, / But the one that is both / Is dental.”  According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, if you’re like the average American, you consume 132 pounds of sugar every year. Compare that to folks in the year 1700, who consumed only about 4 pounds of sugar per year.  If you cook a single ostrich egg, you can feed 24 people.  When you studied history in school, you probably didn’t learn about Edward Hyde. He was a cousin to Queen Anne and was appointed to the post of colonial governor of New York, in which position he served from 1702 to 1708. Though he’s not well known now, he was quite the talk of the colonies in his day. It seems that when a delegation of colonists went to his mansion to welcome the new governor, they found him sitting on the front porch, crocheting a doily and wearing one of his wife’s dresses. At his first formal ball as governor, he wore a gown. His eccentricities continued until he was caught embezzling public money and was returned to England.  The next time you see a shampoo commercial and note how creamy and frothy the lather seems to be, keep this in mind: The model in the advertisement probably has either laundry detergent or frothed egg whites on her hair.  Those who study such things say that 10 years after a hot dog has been dumped in a landfill, the wiener could still be intact. *** Thought for the Day: “When you stop doing things for fun you might as well be dead.” -- Ernest Hemingway (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

She had carried test tubes containing radioactive isotopes unprotected in her pockets and stored them in her desk drawer, noting the curious faint light that the substances gave off in the dark. Marie was also directly exposed to X-rays from unshielded equipment while serving as a radiologist in field hospitals during the war. • Sadly, Irene developed leukemia as well and died from the effects of radiation exposure. Har-Har

Har!

No, Tidbits isn’t laughing about anything. We’re just bringing you all kinds of terms that happen to begin with... har! • That comic jester dressed in a diamond-patterned robe, tights, and mask is known as a harlequin. This nimble clown has been performing his acrobatics and occasional magic tricks since the 11th century. The romance novel publishing company that took the name of Harlequin was founded in 1949 by a Canadian businessman. Today, the Toronto-based company publishes novels in 31 languages on six continents, with offices in Japan, Australia, Sweden, Spain, Greece, Brazil, and Turkey, among many others. Since its founding, Harlequin has sold more than six billion of its books. • The distinctive sound of the harmonica is achieved by blowing air into the instrument’s reed chambers. Each chamber has multiple reeds of varying sizes that vibrate when air is blown in or drawn out. Longer reeds will produce deep lower sounds, while the short reeds make higher pitches. The harmonica was developed in Europe in the early 1800s.

• What are you eating if you’re dining on haricot vert? Green beans! Haricot translates from the French word for “beans” and vert means “green.” French cut green beans are longer, thinner and more tender. • In 1901, 21-year-old William S. Harley drafted a blueprint of an engine designed to fit into a bicycle. Two years later, he and his partner Arthur Davidson offered the first HarleyDavidson motorcycle to the public, working out of a 10 x 15-foot wooden shed. Their first dealer opened for business the following year in Chicago. In 1906, their new factory was erected, measuring 28 x 80 feet. About 20,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles were used by the U.S. Army during World War I, with half of the company’s production during those years sold to the military. This year, the company expects to ship more than a quarter million motorcycles worldwide. • A person described as harum-scarum lacks a sense of responsibility and behaves in a reckless manner. It’s also the name of a 1965 Elvis Presley musical film, in which the King plays a kidnapped American in the Middle East who is recruited by a group of assassins. Elvis’ 24th album by the same name was released that year. • If you’re familiar with the terms picot and Kloster block, you may be an experienced embroiderer. • The prestigious Harvard University is America’s oldest institution of higher learning, established in 1636. It takes its name from an English clergyman, John Harvard, who was the first significant benefactor of the college, bequeathing his 400-volume library and half of his estate upon his death in 1638. The library’s humble beginnings have grown to the largest academic library in the United States. Eight U.S. presidents have graduated from Harvard, as well as 62 living billionaires. If you’re thinking of enrolling this year, plan on handing over close to $55,000 for the tuition and related fees.

I am so excited that “Dallas” is back on TNT for its second season. I am, however, sad about Larr y Hagman’s death; watching his last episodes of “Dallas” are bittersweet, to say the least. How is the cast holding up? -- Mary Anne M., via e-mail

It’s almost time! The seventh season of Lifetime’s hit drama will return with 13 all-new episodes, beginning Sunday, March 10, at 9 p.m. ET/ PT. This season brings new challenges, including a heartfelt and final goodbye to one of the wives in what is being billed as “one of the series’ most dramatic and pivotal moments.” ***

My 4-year-old mutt, Seamus, bit my step son on the nose. In doing so, he ripped off a piece of his nose, and doctors are stitching it back on as I type. This is the second time he’s gone at my step son’s face. The first incident was a year ago. Both times, my stepson put his face in Seamus’ face. We are the second owner. I sent a message to his first owner asking whether he could provide any information. Seamus has been with us for more than three years. He is current on all of his vaccines and has been neutered. Please, any advice would be welcome. Not knowing the dog and not knowing the actual circumstances, the best advice I can give is: --Enlist the services of a dog trainer who specializes in aggression -- yesterday. --Start networking to find Seamus a home without small children. --Keep Seamus separated from your stepson at all times. --Teach your stepson how to appropriately and kindly handle animals. That’s my after-the-fact advice. The best solution for this kind of problem is prevention. When inheriting a dog from a friend or relative, or adopting from a stranger, don’t be shy about asking why. “Why are you giving your dog away?” is a natural curiosity, and it could save you a lot of heartache. Be prepared, though. People are rarely forthright with details that could work against them. If someone tells you they have to rehome their dog because their child or spouse is allergic, persist. Study Links Sugar Intake to Higher Disease Risks When I was a child, my mother thought my brother was not going to live because he was so painfully thin. He did not eat much, and she pushed as many calories into him as possible. Gradually over the years, his weight became acceptable, and by the time he was in his 30s, he was pleasantly plump, gradually increasing in weight with each passing year. There is no question that something happens to our metabolism when we become young adults. This alteration (not well understood, I might add) leads to the beginning of weight gain that averages about a pound per year until about age 65 and then levels off. Weight gain becomes less common after age 75. In the past 50 years, being overweight has become the norm rather than the exception, and children are becoming ever more obese. We have blamed this change on a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy food choices, large portion sizes and the consumption of far too many calories. In the mid- and late-20th century, fat and cholesterol took the blame. A low-fat diet became everyone’s goal. Fat intake was restricted, but starch and sugar were not, and sadly we became even more rotund. Recently, a great deal of evidence is accumulating that refined sugars, such as table sugar or sucrose and high fructose corn syrup, are a major cause of weight gain. Many decried sugar’s negative effects on health, including an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, weight gain and, of course, dental issues. Even though this was well accepted by some, the research evidence left much to be desired, and many experts in the field felt that the cause was not how much sugar one consumed but how many calories. In a new study published in the prestigious journal BMJ, researchers demonstrated a very significant correlation between increased sugar intake and weight gain. And -- vice versa -- reducing sugar intake led to weight loss. The link between sugar intake and weight was very strong in adults but less so in children, presumably because their diet is so varied. However, if you looked only at sugary drinks con-

sumed, the more sugar taken in by children, the fatter they were. The World Health Organization recommends that refined sugar should constitute less than 10 percent of total calories consumed. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, sugar intake in Americans ranges from 16 percent to 20 percent of total calories consumed. And when the fat content of the diet is restricted, excess carbohydrates from starches, cookies and other fat-free products are used to assure a calorie intake that causes satiety. Too much sugar and starch in the diet leads to weight gain and the so-called “metabolic syndrome.” In the body, refined sugars and carbohydrates are converted to glucose. To maintain a normal blood sugar, excessive amounts of insulin are released from the pancreas, and the glucose is pumped into cells where the excess is converted into a special form of fat called triglycerides. These enter the bloodstream and are stored in fat cells. As weight is gained, insulin loses its ability to reduce blood sugar to normal. This is referred to as insulin resistance, and it leads to Type 2 diabetes. These individuals are overweight, have very high triglyceride blood levels and are prone to cholesterol deposits in blood vessels and heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and kidney disease. The most remarkable aspect of this “selfmade” disease is that it is eminently curable by diet and exercise. Anyone who has developed the metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance and is overweight should see a diabetic educator. An appropriate diet and an exercise regimen frequently return the blood sugar to normal, reduce the risk of heart disease and prevent hypertension. The fact that sugar and, to a lesser extent, too much starch, have negative impacts on our weight provides more compelling evidence that the best diet is prudent, contains the right amounts of fat, fruits and vegetables, protein and sugar and starch in moderation. Combined with exercise and a healthy outlook on life, serious illness can be prevented and a longer life assured.

CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) the whole family be present with the dog at some point in your presence, and make sure every member of your family meets the dog before he moves in. Ask to play with the dog and his favorite toy, and tell the owner you’d like to come around for feeding time -- for the dog, not you. And if this dog will be living with another dog, arrange an introduction on neutral territory before committing. Seeing is believing. On November 11, 2012, firefighter paramedic Bob Brown came home to find his wife’s body at the bottom of the basement stairs in their home, dog bite wounds adorning her neck. According to The Chicago Tribune, an autopsy confirmed that Dawn Brown, 44, died of dog bites to her neck from a 140-pound mastiff. The Browns had adopted the mastiff only a week earlier, from a relative. The reason the family member cited for giving up the dog? They could not care for it anymore. French Mastiffs, while large, are typically gentle giants. But breed is no guarantee of temperament. The only thing investigators unearthed that could have played a role in the attack is that the mastiff wasn’t getting along with one of the Browns’ two older dogs. Inviting a dog into your life is a big deal. It’s your life, your home, your family. It’s a 10- to 20-year commitment. Don’t be shy. Don’t feel obligated. Ask questions until you are satisfied. A good match serves the interests of everyone, including the dog. Woof! her second husband, too. But because a widow’s rate -- up to 100 percent -- is much higher than the rate paid to a current wife -- only up to 50 percent -- a woman usually gets much higher benefits from her deceased husband’s account than she would be due from her current husband. Oh, and if husband number two dies, the twicewidowed woman can pick and choose. She would get benefits from whichever husband had the more generous Social Security account.

Q:

We Don’t Want Widows “Living in Sin!”

I am about to turn 66. I started getting widow’s benefits at age 60. I was told at that time that my own Social Security retirement rate was much less than my deceased husband’s benefit. But now that I am 66, I am wondering if my own benefit is higher. Will they automatically switch me over if it is? Or should I wait until age 70 when I understand I can get the maximum rate?

your own rate is still less than your widow’s benefit, then you will simply continue to get widow’s benefits for the rest of your life. If you check with Social Security and find that your age 66 rate is already higher than your widow’s benefit, then you have two choices. You can either switch to that higher benefit on your own record now. Or you can wait until age 70 and switch to an even higher benefit (with that 32 percent bonus). If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@ comcast.net. Once infected, a person stays infected for life. That person is a carrier. Transmission is a huge problem. Even when a person has no signs of an outbreak, he or she can pass the virus to a partner. Therefore, all sexual partners should be told about the infection. Condoms, while not 100 percent protective, afford a major degree of safety. Don’t Catch the Flu!

This season’s flu just isn’t going away. It’s getting worse. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those requiring the most hospitalizations from the flu are seniors age 65 and older. The most common underlying medical conditions include cardiovascular disease, obesity, lung disease and metabolic disorders. Right on the heels of this bad news, however, a national network of caregivers has published a list of suggestions for avoiding the flu. If anyone knows about the flu, it’s the Visiting Angels (www. visitingangels.com)! They’ve created a “Fight the Flu Kit,” and their list makes sense: -- Paper towels: Use these in the bathroom or at the kitchen sink instead of hand towels, which can harbor germs. -- A forehead thermometer: No need to put anything in your mouth. Ask your pharmacist for brand recommendations. --Hand sanitizers with aloe: sanitize hands without drying skin --Pens: Carry your own in public when you have to sign something. Don’t touch something used by hundreds of others. --Lysol spray: Use at home on doorknobs, handles and light switches (spray on a paper towel first). We have been sending sizeable gift checks to our grandchildren on their birthdays for the past six years. PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.

The stigma about hybrid clubs All Rights Reserved

STAN SMITH’S TENNIS CLASS

Although there are more and more hybrid clubs showing up in golf bags, there is still a large number of golfers who should be playing them instead of long irons, yet they have never even tried hitting one. Early on, hybrid clubs were resisted because they were considered easier to hit than long irons. Well, they are! So why is that viewed as a bad thing? Not only are they easier to hit from the fairway, but they are easier off the tee, out of the bunkers and the rough. Although there is still some stigma about the hybrid club, most golfers are gitting over it. If you are wondering if a hybrid club is better for you than long irons, you can borrow a demo club from your local golf shop (or a friend’s golf bag) and try it for yourself. You’ll notice it feels like you are able to hit more down on the ball, very similar to the feel of a shorter iron. It will also be easier to get the ball up in the air and contact will be more consistent and solid due to the fact that hybrids are more forgiving than long irons. You’ll wonder what took you so long to give the hybrid a chance. Tina Mickelson, PGA
