Rural clubs for youth across the United States used the three-leaf clover for their symbol in 1907. The three leaves represented Head, Heart, and Hands. In 1909, the emblem was changed to four leaves and another “H” was added: Health. In 1924 the clubs became known as 4-H clubs, dedicated to teaching citizenship, leadership and life skills.

 It was in the late 1930s when Harry Reeves, a writer for the Donald Duck cartoon, decided that introducing three nephews would open up a lot of story lines. At a loss for names for the characters, Reeves asked Jim Carmichael, who also worked on the cartoons, for suggestions. Carmichael was busy with his own work, but in glancing down at the newspaper on his desk he noticed Thomas E. Dewey and Huey P. Long were both mentioned in headlines, so he suggested Huey and Dewey. A friend named Louie Schmitt stopped in to say hello at that moment, so he added Louie as the third nephew.

Good Luck! Whether you spend hours seeking a four-leaf clover or have a favorite rabbit’s foot that you rub, you may wonder about the origins and realities of symbols of good luck. • The plant that is considered to be the original shamrock is the white clover, trifolium repens, plant. These true shamrocks sometimes produce four-leaf clovers. The way to know that these are the real thing is that the fourth leaf is smaller than the other three leaves. • According to the Free Online Encyclopedia, a shamrock is “a plant with leaves composed of three leaflets. According to legend it was used by St. Patrick in explaining the doctrine of the Trinity; it is now used as the emblem of Ireland.” • St. Patrick was actually born in Britain, kidnapped and taken to Ireland as a slave when he was only 16. He later escaped and then returned to Ireland as a missionary. He used the native clover to explain the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and is credited with bringing Christianity to the Irish people. • With four-leaf clovers it is said that the first leaf is for faith, the second for hope, the third for

• For people who look more to “luck” than spiritual symbolism from clover, the leaves of a four-leaf clover represent four lucky characteristics: love, health, respect and wealth. • In the Celtic religion of the Druids in early Irish history, three was a mystical number. They considered the shamrock a sacred plant because of its three leaves that formed a triad, also called a trifoliolate plant. • Early Celts of Wales believed that white clover, held in high esteem, would protect against evil spirits. • The “luck of the Irish” is spoken about as much in America as it is in Ireland. In fact, many Irish traditions are rooted more in American heritage than Irish! • St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland is a religious holiday. Many businesses close for the day so families can spend time together. The St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in America are more

What do the following comments have in common? “I’ve given her tongue lashings that would wake the dead and ostracized her to the point of feeling guilty like an abusive jailer.” “I’ve bitten her on the neck and stared her straight in the eyes.” “I use a pronged training collar, which makes a world of difference.” “When she goes after my hand, I push it farther into her mouth.” “What can I do? I have scolded her, slapped her, isolated her, but nothing seems to work.” Answer: They are all confessions of dog abusers. These were nonchalant comments dropped by ignorant people in the course of explaining to me the problem with their dog. What they don’t realize is that the dog is not the problem. Their dog does not obey. His behavior is embarrassing. They are frustrated. Exhausted. At their wits’ end. And on and on. But none of the dogs subjected to the abuse laid out above were ever trained. In all fairness, how high should the expectations be? One woman said, “He won’t come to me.” I asked her whether he had been trained to “come.” She said, “Well, I bought him. Shouldn’t he come to me?” A signature on a check means nothing to a dog -- and neither do the words “come” and “no” unless you teach him. None of the “techniques” quoted above constitute teaching or training. Most of them were bad ideas pulled from the Internet in a misguided attempt to fix a serious problem. If you were diagnosed with cancer, would you turn to the Internet to nail down a treatment plan? Would you heed the advice found on Orville’s Free Oncology blog? Of course not. You’d turn to a doctor, a professional, a specialist. We’re not treating cancer here, but we are dealing with situations that do become dangerous when not properly managed. In dealing with dogs, our voices and hands are tools to shower love, praise and affection. The voice should be pleasant; the hands, soothing. This is how we earn the trust of our canine companions, and it usually isn’t hard to do. They want to please us. They’re ready to trust us. They love to love us. Far and away it is we who do not readily know how to love. CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

lifelong health Dr. David Lipschitz

Myths About Obesity Rest on Slim Evidence Much of what we believe about obesity may be incorrect. The New England Journal of Medicine recently published “Myths, Presumptions and Facts About Obesity,” a paper from scientists at nutritional centers in the United States and abroad. They suggest that many common beliefs regarding obesity are not supported by scientific evidence (they are presumptions) or that information suggests the beliefs to be incorrect (myths). This paper raises serious questions about our understanding of obesity. Here are beliefs the authors identify as myths. Myth: Reducing calorie intake or increasing exercise over prolonged periods of time leads to significant weight loss, so slightly reducing food intake while adding moderate exercise can lead to an annual weight loss of 10 pounds. Research shows that for most people, the loss is more like 2 pounds annually. Myth: It is important to set realistic weight loss goals, and failure to do so leads to frustration, limiting weight loss. New research indicates that the more ambitious the weight loss goals, the better. Myth: Rapid weight loss is less likely to succeed in the long term compared with slow, gradual weight loss. Remarkably, research indicates that rapid initial weight loss leads to a higher chance of success. Myth: To be successful, someone must be ready and committed to weight loss. In fact, initial attitude about weight loss does not appear to predict success. Myth: Physical education programs help to prevent childhood obesity. Sadly, a number of research studies have shown that frequent supervised exercise programs at school do not affect weight. Myth: Being breastfed reduces the lifetime risk of obesity. A recent analysis of World Health Organization information shows this is not true. Myth: Increased sexual activity helps weight loss. It was said that sexual activity expends up to 300 calories, but research has shown that the actual calories expended are typically 3.5 per minute. And here are beliefs not supported by scientific evidence (presumptions). 1. Eating a big breakfast helps prevent weight gain by reducing hunger later in the day. One study stated that breakfast habits showed no impact on weight, while another showed some benefit. 2. Eating more fruits and vegetables helps weight loss. While they are healthy for you, studies show that merely eating these foods without making other behavioral changes may not promote weight loss. 3. Early childhood habits in regard to exercise and diet affect weight in later life. Evidence suggests that genetic factors, not habits, affect weight in later life. 4. Weight cycling increases the risk of dying. It is better to maintain a stable weight than to lose and gain weight repetitively. Although there is some truth to the observation that weight cyclers (yo-yo dieters) often have health problems, studies have not been done that prove cause and effect, and many experts question the validity of this belief. 5. Snacking contributes to obesity. Here as many studies show weight loss as show gain. 6. Living in a community with great parks and sidewalks promotes weight loss. There is no consistent evidence from the observational studies that have been done that shows where you live affects obesity risk. The authors listed some beliefs that have

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Social Security Won’t Go Over a Fiscal Cliff

Security than people today. Back in the late 1970s, Social Security was bumping up against some very bleak deadlines. I recall headlines like: “Social Security five years away from bankruptcy.” Currently we are about 15 years away from some serious financial problems for the program. I don’t use the term “bankrupt” because the system never can go belly up. Even if the worst case scenario happens - meaning Congress takes absolutely no action on Social Security reform in the next decade and a half and the trust fund reserves dry up - Social Security will still be taking in enough money to pay 75 percent of all promised benefits. That’s not bankruptcy, but it is some serious fiscal doo-doo! But the point is, we are simply never going to reach that “fiscal cliff” for Social Security. We got close to that cliff in the late 1970s, but a bipartisan commission in 1983 ironed out a package of Social Security reforms that have kept the system solvent to this day. And the same thing will happen this time around. Long before we reach the next cliff, another package of reforms will be implemented. As I said before, Social Security has changed a lot in the last 80 years, and it will change as needed in the future to ensure that all Americans, old and young alike, can count on the safety net of Social Security protection. * * *

Q:

I have a suggestion for how we can help to solve part of the Social Security problem: Why don’t you just kick all the millionaires out of the system? They don’t really need to be taking money out of Social Security, so why should they be helping to bankrupt the system by taking money away from the rest of us seniors who really need it?

Page 11

Security into a straight welfare program. And I don’t think the American people want that. If you want to see an analysis of serious proposals for Social Security reform, send an email to me at thomas.margenau@comcast.net and ask for a free digital copy of my fact sheet: “Myths and Facts About Social Security Financing.” If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast. net. Essentially what you want to do is apply a “means test” to Social Security -- to pay benefits only to people who need benefits. But there are two problems with that approach. One is this: Where do we draw the line? How rich is too rich to get Social Security? Kicking millionaires out of the program, as you suggest, is an absolutely meaningless gesture. It doesn’t even make a dent in Social Security’s long-range deficit. Actuaries point out that in order for means testing to help erase Social Security’s long-range obligations, you would have to draw that line at folks with about $100,000 in income. All the talk at the end of last year about the so-called “fiscal cliff” our country faced if Congress and the president couldn’t agree on economic reforms got me to thinking about the fiscal cliff Social Security faces -- not imminently but about 20 years down the road. And I’m obviously not the only one thinking about it. Not a single day goes by when I don’t get emails from readers that include some comment like this: “Thanks for your help in understanding my Social Security situation. I just hope the program will still be there when I retire!” I know that comments like that are often times meant to be flippant. But I also know that there is some degree of anxiety attached to those attempts at levity. And I guess folks can be forgiven for being anxious about the future of Social Security given all the scare stories you hear and read in the media about the program’s imminent demise But as I’ve pointed out hundreds of times in this column over the years, Social Security is NOT going away. Social Security has been around for almost 80 years. The program has changed a lot in the last eight decades and will change a lot in the next eight decades. But a basic Social Security program will always be the bedrock of our nation’s pension and retirement system. 40 years ago, most of my readers probably were in their teens or twenties. They weren’t paying very much attention to Social Security because they had other things on their minds -- like starting careers and families. But 40 years ago I was very much interested in Social Security because I had just gotten a job with the Social Security Administration. Almost from the get-go, I found myself doing public information work for the agency. One of my jobs was to run around and talk to various community groups about Social Security. My first speech was at a Kiwanis Club meeting in Chicago in 1975. And the very first question I got from a member of an audience went something like this: “Why should we bother listening to you and what you have to say because we all know Social Security will be gone long before we are eligible for benefits?” As a neophyte at public speaking, I will admit that I was a bit taken aback by his comment. And I was even more bewildered when I noticed many heads in the room nodding with agreement. I really don’t recall the not-very-convincing answer that probably stumbled out of my mouth. But I would like to meet this guy now. He was in his mid to late 40s at the time, and if he’s still alive today, he’s now in his 80s, if not pushing 90, and very likely has been getting Social Security benefits for 20 or 30 years! But the thing is, that guy probably had more reason to be pessimistic about the future of Social

An initial sickness after acquiring hepatitis C virus is rare, and, that’s why you and your husband didn’t realize you were infected. The virus can be transmitted through blood transfusions (no longer a threat), sharing needles for drug injections, rarely through sexual relations and household contact, but more possibly through promiscuous sex and in ways yet to be determined. You’re not a threat to others. The booklet on hepatitis describes these infections and their treatment, not including the latest treatments. Have you considered what you will do after retirement with all the spare time you will suddenly have on your hands? This new situation can be a sudden awakening if you’re not expecting it, and it can possibly become a source of friction. The wife who has been used to having the home to herself all day now finds her husband is around and “underfoot” 24/7. But a newly retired husband can face much more of an adjustment when he no longer has others depending on his presence and role in the workplace. Men often grieve the loss of identity and status that their job provided for them, and some can even take on feelings of worthlessness and slip into depression. If you and your husband don’t already have some sort of outside activites or hobby that you both can participate in, I recommend talking it over to see

• When the Purdue students and their drum cargo Cooltheir Breeze Size arrived in Wichita, they discovered that Feb. 10, 2013 Texas counterparts had conveniently “forgotten” to bring Big Bertha with them. ByPremium default, Caddy Position Purdue declared victory and officially named theirs the “World’s Largest Bass Drum.” • Since then, the exact measurements of the Big Bertha drum remain undisclosed, further preserving the mystique surrounding it. • The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is one of the most celebrated of all parade events, and one that every band dreams of marching in. There are usually less than a dozen bands chosen from hundreds of entries submitted each year by hopeful band directors. Participants have come from all 50 states and even as far away as Guatemala. One band that is a Macy’s Parade regular and always a crowd favorite represents “New York City’s Finest” -- the NYPD.

Downhill Bunker Shot The downhill bunker shot can be very intimidating, but with the right setup you can feel more comfortable over the shot as well as enjoy better execution. Here’s what you need to focus on the next time you are faced with a downhill bunker shot:

“You’ve only yourself to blame, you know. lt wasn’t wise at all trying to play through the Womens Hell’s Angles Club calling them a bunch of blonde idiots.”

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.

● Align your shoulders with the slope of the hill. Your shoulders should be parallel to the slope. To do this properly you will find that your weight is on the inside part of your left foot and your left shoulder is lower than your right. ● Ball position is critical. With a slightly open stance and club face, play the ball in the center of your stance. This setup will encourage a steeper swing. You still want to ensure that you hit the sand behind the ball as you would a regular bunker shot, but the follow through should continue along the slope of the hill, remaining low and as open as possible. Don’t allow the club to turn over. The ball will come out lower than a normal bunker shot and there will be more topspin on the ball, causing it to roll further. By taking all of these factors into account your downhill bunker shots and your confidence in achieving them will quickly improve. Tina Mickelson, PGA
