• That first ascent was via the first of fifteen routes that have been mapped to the top. Since that ascent there have been more than 3000 people who have reached the summit over 5000 times. More than 75% of those climbs have been since the year 2000. The popularity of extreme sports and the availability of guides and travel privileges for many people have made mountain climbs of this caliber a reality for more people.

ORNAMENTAL (from page one) of tinsel in 1610 was a huge favorite, originally made with pure silver. • One of the first Christmas trees in England was an 1840 Royal Family celebration when Queen Victoria included a tree in honor of her German-born husband Prince Albert’s heritage. Being the great influence that she was, many people wanted their own trees! • Many of the ornaments in the early years of decorating trees were handmade from paper, cloth or even foods, such as cookies. Handstitched snowflakes were also very popular. • Special items that emerged for decorating trees in America were cranberries and popcorn. Early Americans would string the readily available, colorful foods for trimming their trees.

The last one to give up would be awarded a mobile home. The problem was, nobody wanted to give up. The three men who climbed to the top of the sign at the end of September were still there come March 1983. In that month, one of the contestants was arrested for dealing drugs, but the remaining two stayed aloft until May. Once the freezing winter was finally over, the radio station decided to declare both of the men winners. • As the end of the year approaches, you might consider an old British tradition: Light a candle, place it on the floor and jump over it. Week of December 16, 2012

unmarried wedding guests put a slice of fruitcake under their pillow at night they would dream of who they were destined to marry. • December is National Fruit Cake Month and Claxton, Georgia is the Fruit Cake Capital of the World.

Fruit Cake Fruit cake has been baked as a holiday treat since at least the 16th century – and maybe before. During this time, it has become known as the gift that keeps on giving, because after it is received as a gift it is frequently “regifted” to someone else at a later date. Love it, like it, or hate it - we will pass along some sweet & nutty facts about this iconic goodie. • Fruitcake, sometimes spelled as one word, other times as two, is defined as: “ 1) a rich cake containing nuts, dried or candied fruits, and spices; also as: 2) a foolish, eccentric, or crazy person.”

• Even though fruit cake is and has been the butt of many jokes for years, Albert Parker saw a fine product with a future when he purchased the Claxton Bakery in 1945. • The Claxton Bakery was opened in 1910 by Savino Tos, an Italian immigrant who had moved to Georgia from New York City. He operated the bakery until 1945 when he sold the business to Albert, who had worked there since he was 11 years old. • When Albert noticed that grocery stores were starting to sell fresh bread and other bakery items on their shelves, he knew that he needed to do something to set his bakery apart. He decided to specialize in the “high quality fruit cake” that townspeople had been enjoying during the

• The earliest known recipe for fruitcake that exists was from ancient Rome. Among the ingredients were pomegranate seeds, raisins, and pine nuts, mixed in a barley mash. Later, honey, preserved fruits and spices were added. • Because fruitcake’s dense consistency and its longevity allowed for it to be held for many days, early hunters and warriors took it with PROOF them onADVERTISING long journeys.

holiday season each year. In the first year that his company mass produced fruit cakes, Parker and his small crew of employees baked 45,000 pounds (20,412 kg) of Claxton Fruit Cakes! • Even if you think you don’t like fruit cake, maybe you should try a Claxton specialty. Look for the cakes with a unique horse and buggy label. They are sold by mail order and in many stores every year during the holidays. They are also used for fundraising by more than 1,000 civic organizations in the U.S. The Civitan Club of Tampa, Florida first started the fundraising tradition in the early 1950s. • The term “nutty as a fruitcake” was coined in 1935 when some American bakeries with access to cheaper nuts started adding larger quantities of nuts to their cakes. Claxton Fruit Cakes are “approximately 70% choice fruits and nuts.” • By the way, December 27th is National Fruitcake Day. Also, just so you are aware, there is an internet web presence for “The Society for the Protection and Preservation of Fruitcake!” ■

just before the movie’s premiere, David filed a defamation suit over the film’s portrayal of his business as failing, asserting that some of the film’s scenes were staged or exaggerated. ***

Q: When will “Merlin” return to Syfy? -- Felix S., via e-mail

A: Season five of the popular fantasy series, Q:

Ever since “GCB” was canceled, I’ve scoured the networks to find some of my favorite actors on other series. I haven’t seen Mark Deklin on anything recently, so I wondered if you could tell me what he is up to. - Gigi W., via email

A:

Mark recently filmed a guest spot on “Castle” (it is episode 10, which is set to air in early January), where he plays a man whose girlfriend is found dead. Later in 2013 (an exact date has not been set yet), you can see Mark on the big screen in a liveaction version of “Tarzan.” Mark told me about the film and his character, John Greystoke: “It’s not the Victorian ‘Tarzan’ that we all grew up with. It’s a modern Mark Delkin take on it. My character is almost like a Richard Branson type -- a wealthy but well-intentioned adventurer and entrepreneur. He discovers there’s a serious energy source -- a sort of meteorite, which crashed in Africa -- and he wants to find it. “He brings his family with him, which of course is a stupid decision, but I suppose in the moment it doesn’t seem stupid because he doesn’t go thinking he’s going to die. He ends up unleashing a mystical force that he never could have anticipated, and everything goes south.” ***

Healthy Exchanges

which premieres Friday, Jan. 4, at 10 p.m. ET on Syfy, will be the final season of the show. Executive producers (Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy) promise fans that “Merlin” is “leading to a spectacular finale that draws on the best-known elements of this muchloved story, and brings to a conclusion the battle for Camelot.” ***

Bacon and Tomato Party Cups This recipe is perfect for just about any special festivity you’ll host or attend this season. 1 (7.5 ounce) package refrigerated buttermilk biscuits 1/4 cup bacon bits 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup peeled and chopped fresh tomatoes 1/2 cup shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese 1/2 cup fat-free mayonnaise 1 teaspoon dried basil

Q:

A: After “The Avengers” smashed all sorts

of box-office records this summer, you can bet there will be a sequel. “The Avengers 2” is set to premiere May 1, 2015, with the original cast, as well as some new faces.

Thanks to a brilliant marketing campaign, there has been increased awareness among men of the condition of testosterone deficiency -- or “Low T.” A number of young adults are wearing a Low T badge with pride to show off their newfound virility. At long last, they can blame their chronic fatigue, insomnia, poor work performance, depression and an evaporation of libido on low testosterone levels. This new syndrome was not developed through the effort of brilliant scientists, but by the Eli Lilly and Co. as an attempt to let everyone know how widespread testosterone deficiency is among men from age 30 on. To make the problem easier to understand and by using a nationwide campaign blitz, “Low T” is now a familiar phrase. If you have it, you are part of the “in” crowd who hopes to be forever young. Numerous scholarly studies have shown that in men over 45, an average of 37 percent will have testosterone levels in the low normal, but not deficient, range. Low testosterone does interfere with some critically important functions. The hormone is essential for the production of viable and healthy sperm -- it plays a role in libido but not in becoming aroused or having an erection. It is not surprising then that a research study just published in the Annals of Internal Medicine showed that adding testosterone to the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra in men with low testosterone did not improve the quality of the erection in any way. Testosterone also is essential for strong, healthy muscles and bones, and when deficient, can lead to osteoporosis and weakness. These symptoms generally occur in men well beyond 75 and are much rarer in men in their 60s. The nonspecific symptoms that have been ascribed, in part, to low testosterone include fatigue, reduced muscle mass and weakness, decreased sports performance, depression, increased body fat, decreased bone strength, loss of body hair, a need to shave less frequently and temporal crown baldness. Whether in a doctor’s office or at a Low T clinic, patients are begging for a testosterone shot, preferably combined with a vitamin B-12 injection, to boost vim and vigor. Because so many of the symptoms of low testosterone are nonspecific and could be caused by stress, depression, sleep disorders and many other conditions, rushing to treat a younger patient with a testosterone injection or cream should be done with caution. Testosterone should not used as a panacea for more energy, better sleep habits or greater prowess on the tennis court or golf course. It should be used for the far more serious problems, such as infertility, muscle mass loss, osteoporosis and improving libido.

Nine-Month Marriage Rule Has Few Exceptions Q:

I married my husband in June 2012 and he died suddenly in October. Am I eligible for widow’s benefits on his account?

I was married for 30 years and got divorced in 1999. I never remarried, but my ex-husband has been married twice since. His second marriage lasted only two years. Square Up Your Finish with Better Balance

Many golfers out there have a difficult time finishing their swings in balance. It is tough for them to “strike a pose” and hold their finish. This is often a result a poor balance. As discussed in previous articles, the key to making better swings is understanding how the body is designed on a grid and in eight sockets; two shoulder, hips, knees and ankles. Keeping these sockets stacked in relation to each other is what keeps the body in balance and when the body is in balance it makes it easier to keep the rotation of the swing moving through to a balanced finish. Notice in the photo how I am in perfect balance as I am holding my finish; my shoulders are balanced on top of my hips, which are balanced on top of my knees and on top of my feet. I also have both shoulders level to each other as well as the hips and knees. As you can see on the screen in the distance, my body is basically on a grid that shows me what perfect balance feels like. Many times higher handicappers struggle into a balanced finish because their shoulders have rotated off their hips in the forward swing or they have swiveled their knees out from under their hips. As soon as the body feels this loss of balance it will stop the rotation and the arms and hands will need to flip the club through impact resulting in a mishit. Teaching with Motion Analysis Technology, as seen in the photo with the sensors on my body and image on the screen in the background, gives me the exact data to measure my angles in my swing. I can see on the monitor where perfect balance is as I hold my finish, therefore train my body to repeat perfect balance on a more consistent basis. This exact data gives me and the student greater clarity and precision in making the necessary adjustments to create a faster more effective result. If you would like to experience Motion Analysis Technology to improve your swing, give me a call.

The use of Motion Analysis Technology (MAT), as shown in the photo, uses sensors to show the exact angles of these key body points in the swing motion. This visual method is highly useful in allowing both student and instructor to quickly see where adjustments need to be made. I have found MAT to be one of my most effective teaching methods.
