2 cups (4 small) cored, peeled and sliced cooking apples

1 teaspoon apple-pie spice

1/4 cup quick oats

6 tablespoons reduced-fat baking mix

Granular sugar substitute to equal 1/4 cup sugar, suitable for baking

4 teaspoons reduced-calorie margarine

1. In a medium bowl, combine apples and apple-pie spice. Evenly spoon mixture into 4 (10-ounce) microwavable custard cups. In same bowl, combine oats, baking mix, sugar substitute and margarine. Mix well until crumbly. Evenly sprinkle crumb mixture over apples.

2. Microwave on HIGH (100 percent power) for 8 to 10 minutes or until apples are tender. Let set for at least 5 minutes. Good warm or cold.

Dear Uncle Matty: During the holidays (both Thanksgiving and Christmas), our house is going to be full of visiting revelers. The whole season will be an extended family reunion of sorts, and some of my relatives are getting up there in age. Two elderly uncles walk with canes, and others usually need some kind of assistance. I’m worried about Biscuit, our energetic Labrador. She is 13 months old and a real handful.

The problem is, she not only jumps up on people when they first enter the house, but if they say anything to her, she’s up and at ‘em or in their laps if they are sitting down. Other than this problem, she is a really wonderful dog. She has not had any formal training, but she caught on to “sit” and “come here” all by herself. How can we teach her not to knock people down?

Nucut Glass a Cut Above Pressed Glass

This mark is on the bottom of my porcelain figurine. Standing approximately 4 inches tall, the figurine is a young girl holding a basket of flowers. She is wearing a green dress, a yellow apron, a pink scarf and stands on a pedestal.

I have been trying to find information on the maker and value for quite a long time. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

A:

The blue crown over an “N” has been used by several companies in Europe. Capo-di-Monte located in Naples, Italy, was the first to utilize it around 1740. They sold their molds to Ginori Factory in Doccia, Italy, around 1820. Ernst Bohne and Sons in Thuringia, Germany, and Sandizell Porcelain Factory in Bavaria, Germany, also used the mark.

Based on the image of your mark, your figurine was made by Bohne and Sons. It would probably be worth $50 to $75.

This exquisite looking small cut-glass dish is 6 inches in diameter and in perfect condition. The word “Nucut” is marked in the center. It has been in our family for many years, but I am not sure when or where we obtained it.

I would appreciate any information you can tell me about this piece and it's maker. I'd particularly like to know something about its history and value.

A: Although your dish appears to be cut glass,

it is actually a high quality pressed glass. Located in Bellaire, Ohio, Imperial Glass Co. introduced their “Nucut” line in 1914. It was created to be a cut glass look-a-like. Cut glass was very expensive -- Nucut was marketed to those who couldn’t afford the real thing.

Your dish was made in the early 1900s and would fetch $15 to $25 in an antiques shop.

A blue crown over a “N” mark was used as early as 1740.

Q: I have a white Hoosier cupboard that

was made by Sellers. There are two doors at the top and three drawers at the lower portion, which are above two doors. It has red Bakelite handles, Art Deco decals and a white porcelain workspace that pulls out. It has the original finish and is in excellent condition.

What can you tell me about my cupboard?

A:

Hoosiers cupboards were first made in Indiana, the Hoosier state, around the turn of the last century.

As demand grew, other companies also manufactured the step-saving cupboards. As a rule, many included a flour bin with a sifter, a bread drawer, a cutting board, storage space for pots and pans, plus racks and hooks for utensils.

Sellers Kitchen Cabinets were made in Elwood, Ind. Most cupboards were made of solid oak with traditional early-1900s designs, making your Art Deco cupboard very unusual.

Your cupboard was created around 1920. I recently saw one selling in an antiques shop for over $1,200.

Achieving desired trajectory Sometimes we are faced with a shot where we need a little higher or lower trajectory than we might expect with our selected club. Rather than taking a different club to accommodate desired trajectory instead of desired distance, try this: Higher trajectory: If you want your shot to have a little higher trajectory take your normal stance, set up to the ball and turn your head, looking up in the sky to the point where you want your ball to go. Hold that position, turning your head back to the ball. As you turn to look high in the sky, a few things will happen. Your right shoulder will lower a little bit, your swing path will be a little more shallow, and some of your weight will shift to your right side. All of this will promote a more lofted shot.
