Q: Will “The Equalizer” return for another season? I’m really enjoying it, even though it’s ver y different from the original series back in the ‘80s. -- J.J. A:

The untitled comedy series starring sitcom legends Kelsey Grammer (“Frasier”) and Alec Baldwin (“30 Rock”) was finished before it ever got started. ABC passed on the series after viewing the pilot last April, months before the horrific tragedy on the set of Baldwin’s movie “Rust” in which cinematographer Halyna Hutchins lost her life. Baldwin is reportedly doing a movie overseas now, as he faces a lawsuit from Hutchins’ family. His career in the U.S. might not ever recover.

Meanwhile, Grammer’s next project is the upcoming “Flowers in the Attic: The Origin,” a TV miniseries premiering July 9 on Lifetime that also stars another television icon, Harry Hamlin (“L.A. Law”). *** Q: What is my all-time favorite actor Nick Nolte doing these days? I loved him in one of my favorite comedies, “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” and then later in “The Prince of Tides.” I haven’t seen him in recent years, however. -- K.L.

Every third time my business line rings, it seems the voice on the other end greets me with, “So, Uncle Matty, how much?” But when interviewing dog trainers, this should be the last question, not the first.

A good trainer initially wants to gain understanding of your needs and your dog in order to determine whether or not they can help. And you’d be wise to first do some investigating into whether that trainer and his or her methods are right for you and your dog. Only then can the two of you talk money. Here are some good ice breakers:  Are you a licensed or certified dog trainer? Certification is not generally required, but it does indicate a dedication to the task and a degree of practical education. Many dog trainers and animal behaviorists qualify themselves as such based on the standard, “I’ve had dogs all my life!”  If not certified, what kind of education do you have in terms of animal behavior and, specifically, dog training?  What is your specialty? Aggression?

Housebreaking? Basic obedience? If a trainer specializes in your dog’s behavioral problem, you might be on to something. But be sure you ask what their specialty is before you tell them your trouble.  What training method do you use? Punishment-based training -- shock ‘em, knee ‘em, tackle ‘em, bonk ‘em? Reward-based training -treats for tricks? Praise-based training -- personality-appropriate correction in conjunction with affection and love? The latter, in my opinion, is the only approach that is both effective and humane.  What kind of results do you get? This is a good time to ask for references.

If your dog’s problem is in the home -- i.e., hostility toward a family member, housebreaking, chewing or jumping on furniture, digging up the yard -- it makes sense to have a trainer come to your home to work with the dog in that environment.

Don’t Blame the Government -- Blame Yourself Sometimes people will write to me complaining that the government, specifically the Social Security Administration, has messed up and cheated them out of benefits they might have been due. But many times, the fault (to trivialize a famous line from Shakespeare’s play, “Julius Caesar”) is not in our government, but in ourselves.

Here are some examples of what I mean:

Q: I am 72 years old. I have been getting my own reduced Social Security retirement since age 62. I have chronic arthritis and fibromyalgia and I just learned I could have been getting higher disability benefits all these years. So, I called Social Security about this, and they said it’s too late! What? Why didn’t someone from Social Security ever tell me about this? They messed up and they owe me ten years’ worth of disability benefits.

They didn’t mess up; you did. It’s your job to educate yourself about the benefits you might be due from Social Security. I know if I had the kinds of problems you described, I would have said to myself: “I wonder if I might be eligible for disability benefits.” And then I would have checked into that.

And I’m not sure how things work today, but I know that ten years ago, the Social Security retirement application had a question on it that essentially asked something like this: “Are you unable to work because of a disabling condition?” You must have answered that question “No,” because a “Yes” answer would have led you down the path to a claim for Social Security disability benefits.

A: Sarreguemines Faienceries has made

earthenware in Lorraine, France, since 1770. Your plates are examples of their “Obernai” pattern. It was designed by Henri Loux around 1930 and was inspired by the villages of Obernai, France. The scenes are transfer prints and feature landscapes, people, animals, castles, and homes.

Each dish can be found selling in antiques shops in the range of $75 to $125.

Portrait of Elegant Woman Featured on Vase Q: Enclosed is a photo of a vase that has been in my family for many years. Both my parents are dead, and I am 67 years of age. I believe this vase preceded both my parents. The portrait of the elegant young woman on the vase is against a background that shades from cream to brown, and the interior is a white glaze. Marked on the bottom of the vase are the words “Warwick -- Ioga” and the image of a knight. It is in perfect condition.

Please advise me of its histor y and roughly how much it would be worth on the market today.

A: Warwick China Co. was located in Wheeling, W. Va., from 1887 to 1951. They produced a wide variety of vitreous china that included portrait vases, dinnerware, jardinieres, bowl and pitcher sets, umbrella stands, and decorative ware. Even though some of their pieces were hand painted, much of their ware was decorated with decals.

The “Ioga with a Warwick China Co. used the knight” mark re“Ioga” mark from 1905 to mains a mystery as to its meaning and was used from 1905 to 1920.

Your circa 1920s portrait vase would probably be worth $250 to $325. *** Q: This is a photo of the mark on the back of an earthenware plate that I inherited from my mother. The set includes six plates all eight inches in diameter, and they are in perfect condition. They are white and decorated with European village scenes and blue and pink flowers on the borders.

Sarreguemines Faienceries has made earthenware in Lorraine, France, since 1770.

*** Q: I have a Tom Thumb toy cash register that I had when I was a child in the 1950s. It is green metal and is about 8 inches high. Is it “Antique or Junque”?

A: Tom Thumb toy cash registers are neither antique nor junque; they are considered collectibles. They were made by Western Stamping Co. in Michigan in the mid- 20th century.

It would probably be worth $75 to $100.

An online search would give you a good idea of its value on the toy collector market.
