• The word “licorice” has its origins in the Greek language, translating “sweet root.” This flowering shrub, a member of the pea family and native to southern Europe and Asia, has a hairy, wooden stem that can grow in gardens to four feet in height. In the wild, the plants are even taller, and covered with small purple and blue flowers. The licorice flavor comes from the plant’s root, where red or brown oblong pods are filled with up to five dark seeds.

An enormous supply of wonderful dogs exists in the hundreds of shelters across the country. Beyond that, and often working in tandem, is a growing army of rescue organizations. They, along with shelters, do the work of angels.

One of the most influential rescue groups in the nation is Best Friends Animal Society. Their purpose? A better world through kindness to animals.

Their outreach? Extends far and wide through a grassroots network of hardworking people and organizations that care about the welfare of animals.

Their influence? Leading by example, they’ve come miles in changing the conventional notion that little could be done to reduce the gutwrenching number of dogs and cats killed in shelters year after year.

That number when Best Friends got started in the late ‘80s: 17 million.

That number today: 5 million.

The euthanization of 5 million dogs and cats a year is nothing to cheer. But the steep decline is proof that single-minded purpose and widespread efforts toward education can tame even the most pervasive of epidemics.

For rescue groups, the education of pet owners is key. They promote spay and neuter programs. They require an application and home check if you want to adopt one of their animals.

This ensures a high probability that the match will stick. But if for whatever reason it doesn’t, they ask only that you return the animal to their care.

A distinguishing feature of rescue groups is the foster system. Volunteers foster animals in their homes and, in the process, get to the know the dogs individually and in a presumably saner environment than that of a shelter. Foster parents offer a degree of insight into a dog’s personality and habits that is otherwise hard to come by. Often, they’re able to provide some basic obedience training, making successful adoption all the more likely.

The "Sell By" date is set by manufacturers to inform stores when the item is still at its optimal quality. This can last for several days to several weeks past the date, depending on the item. Milk for instance, according to Consumer Reports, should last five to seven days past its sell-by date if it's refrigerated properly.

Is it time to go through your pantry and look for any expired food items that might have been purchased over the past two years? You might be surprised. I sure was.

The "Use By" date is the last day the producer guarantees the best quality of the product.

Again, this is not a safety date nor a mandatory label.

I’ve been careful by lining up new items behind the older ones in my cabinets. But the problem, I just discovered after picking up a load of curbside items, is that the expiration dates of some of the recently-bought items aren’t necessarily newer than items that have been in the cabinet for a while.

In general, if we're in a dire food shortage situation, canned foods can still be safely eaten well after the printed expiration date. However, the FDA warns against consuming food from old cans that have bulging or popped seals. If the container looks OK, they say they can actually last as long as two to five years.

Why, I inquired of our store manager, was a box of crackers due to expire sooner than the box I bought two months ago? With a sigh, he admitted the problem: The warehouse is having a terrible time getting in anything. And managers have set up their own grocery swap with other nearby stores in the chain, basically bidding on items another store might have. “I’ll give you six boxes of crackers for six half-gallons of whole milk!” That type of thing.

Twenty-two such pit bulls were seized and placed in special care at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. After intense rehabilitation, some were adopted into loving and experienced homes. Others will live out their lives at the sanctuary.

People looking to adopt from a rescue organization will find breed-specific rescues, areaspecific rescues, groups that zero in on dogs with special medical or behavioral needs, and those that focus their efforts on small dogs, big dogs, senior citizen dogs, refugee dogs, and dogs that were scheduled for euthanasia at a shelter.

In fact, combing high-kill and overcrowded shelters is a big and commendable part of the work of rescue groups.

Social Security Benefits for Widows I’ve saved up some questions that are either from widows or from husbands or wives wondering about future widow’s benefits. Here are some of them.

Q:

I want to make sure my wife gets the highest widow’s benefits possible after I’m gone. How do I do that?

A:

If that’s your only goal with respect to claiming your own Social Security benefits, then the answer is really rather simple: Wait as long as possible to sign up for your retirement benefits.

While you are alive, any spousal benefits your wife might be due are based on your full retirement age benefit amount. But after you’re gone, her widow’s rate will be based on whatever benefit rate you were getting at the time of your death. So, for example, if you waited until age 70 to start your Social Security, meaning you would be getting about 130% of your FRA benefit, your wife will also get that 130% rate in the form of widow’s benefits (assuming she is over her FRA when you die).

books, you are getting your own $800, and you are getting $2,600 in widow’s benefits to take you up to his $3,400 level.

And now let’s say your earnings increase your own retirement benefit to $830 per month.

That means on paper, your widow’s rate goes down to $2,570 because you are still due a total of $3,400 per month.

Q: My husband and I are both in our late 70s. We were both real estate agents most of our lives. I’m still in the business. Because of poor health, my husband isn’t. My Social Security is $2,990. He gets $2,540. If he dies, what will I get in widow’s benefits?

And actually, that GPO law cuts you a deal.

It says only two-thirds of your teacher’s pension will be used to offset your widow’s benefits. In your case, that means only $2,640 of your $4,000 pension will be counted. So, if your husband dies, you will still get $460 in widow’s benefits ($3,100 minus $2,640 equals $460). If you ask me, it’s unfair that you would get $460 in widow’s benefit and the woman who gets a Social Security retirement pension and not a teacher’s pension won’t get a dime!

Q: My wife and I both took our Social

Security at 62. We are now in our 80s. My benefit is much higher than hers. If I die first, will she start getting what I’m getting?

As I explained in the prior answer, I’m sure that on the Social Security Administration’s books, you are getting your own small Social Security benefit that is supplemented with higher widow’s benefits. So, as you work, your own benefit gradually increases every year. But it will probably never reach the point where it exceeds your widow’s rate, and that’s why nothing changes.

Let me further explain this with an example. Let’s say your own Social Security retirement benefit is $800 per month, and that your widow’s benefit is $3,400 per month. So, on the SSA’s

Silver Coffee Set Serves as Family Heirloom Q: I am enclosing a photo of a coffee ser vice that I inherited from my grandmother. The set includes a coffee pot, sugar bowl, cream pitcher and tray. Each piece is marked “EPNS,” and it is my understanding this indicates a type of silver plating. The pieces are all also marked “New Amsterdam Silver Co.” My grandparents were married in 1919, and I believe the set was a wedding gift.

I intend to keep my set; nevertheless, I would like to have an idea of its value.

*** Q: My sister was going through some things that belonged to my dad and came across a sterling pencil case with a wood pencil. The case, when closed, is about 3 1/3 inches long. The case is ornately embossed and has a ring at the top. The pencil has the name on the side “A. W. Faber -- Germany.”

We do know the case has been in my dad’s possession since I was a child but not sure how old it really is.

It probably isn’t worth much, but I hope to learn more about it and its value.

A: Based on your information and description, your sterling case with a pencil was part of a chatelaine. Chatelaines were worn on women’s belts in the Victorian era and held a series of items suspended on chains that often included silver pencil cases, lockets, glove hooks, scissors and keys.

Your case is circa 1900 and would probably be worth $50 to $100.

Couples were required to dance 45 minutes out of every hour of the competition. It wasn’t unusual for the contests to actually go on for weeks. The partners even ate their meals while dancing.

• The 1960s ushered in several unorthodox dances for the music of that decade. Ernest Evans, a former chicken plucker, recorded a song in 1959 under the name Chubby Checker.

He called it “The Twist,” a song with an accompanying dance style that immediately rocketed to the top of the charts. In early August, 1960, he introduced the new dance on TVs “American Bandstand” and the craze took off. There were no special steps to remember, and a partner wasn't even needed to do the The Twist. Five months after his chart-topping “The Twist,” Chubby Checker made the Pony dance popular with his 1961 hit “Pony Time,” which also hit Number One. This dance required a partner, although there was no contact between the pairs. Dancers pretty much just galloped around the dance floor in their own renditions of a loose pony!

• Another ‘60s dance, The Jerk, took its name from the action of the dancers jerking their arms above their head one at a time. The Larks were the first to release a song about the dance, performing “The Jerk” on “American Bandstand in October of 1964. They were quickly followed by Bob & Earl, who sang “Everybody Jerk,” The Capitols, who released “Cool Jerk,” The Contours with “Can You Jerk Like Me?, and “Can You do the Jerk?” by the Miracles.

• Dancers simply went through swimming motions on the dance floor for the 1964 craze of The Swim. Sometimes they would pinch their nose and pretend to sink under water or dance like they were treading water. It’s no surprise that the dance didn’t require a lot of skill! Singer Bobby Freeman’s hit “C’mon and Swim” got the fad started while ranking Number Five on the Billboard charts. □

Handle Swinging While there are many ways to communicate swinging the golf club around yourself and relative to the ball, thinking of how the grip end or “handle” of the club moves can be revolutionary.

By swinging the handle correctly, the clubshaft and clubhead have no choice but to follow along.

It also implies that the hands and wrists will move correctly without thinking of the complicated need for hinging, undocking, flexing, rotating or the like.

One of the best images in the downswing is creating a swinging of the handle like one would swing a broomstick forward. In order to overcome the weight of broomstick, your arm swing and weight shift would initiate the forward movement. You would be “swinging the handle” rather than trying to control the broom head.

Be sensitive of how your grip pressure and tension in your hands and wrists can influence swinging the handle. Lighter tension allows for more supple wrists and thus more speed.
