Where do dogs come from? I’m not talking about storks here. I’m talking about the people and places we turn to in our quest to find the dog of our dreams.

The great majority of dogs come from one of four places: 1) Breeders 2) Local shelters 3) Humane societies 4) Rescues Of course, sometimes getting a dog isn’t so much planned as it is organic. A friend of mine glows when telling the story of how she stalked a gorgeous brindle pit bull mix through her neighborhood, where he lived as a stray, until she got close enough to lasso him with her H&M scarf. He went home with her. She fed him a steak. They’ve been together for six happy years.

And sometimes the family dog comes out of extraordinary circumstances. Such was the case when Zak Anderegg discovered an abandoned puppy left to starve in a 350-foot canyon at the ArizonaUtah border. Anderegg rappelled into the canyon two more times -- once to deliver food and water to the weak and dehydrated pup and once more with supplies to lift him up and out of the canyon for good. Riley is now a permanent member of the Anderegg family.

The whims of fate and the workings of miracles notwithstanding, most of us, when looking for our next dog, will turn to one of the Big Four.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll lay out the differences between the four and answer some of the more frequently asked questions about each one.

Protective Filing Dates This is going to be a column about a special procedure that the Social Security Administration routinely uses that is intended to help people by protecting their rights to possible benefits. It’s called a “protective filing date.”

In a nutshell, if you contact the SSA and tell them you intend to file for some kind of Social Security benefit, and give them your name and Social Security number, it establishes a record that could possibly be used as a starting date for any Social Security application you might file later on. However, that protective date is usually good for only six months.

The best way to explain this procedure in more detail is by answering some questions I got from readers about this issue.

Q:

My wife recently signed up for Social Security. She wanted her benefits to start in June, when she will be 65 years old. But then the Social Security rep got her all confused because he said their records showed that my wife called them back in Januar y.

And he said because she did that, she has to start her benefits in Januar y at a lesser rate that what she would have been due had she been allowed to start her benefits in June as she wanted. She got so confused that she just hung up and ended the call. Now we don’t know what to do. Can you help us?

I will bet my next Social Security check that this friend of yours contacted the SSA a number of months before she finally decided to file for benefits. And when she did actually sign on the dotted line, they used that protected date as her filing date. So that’s why she got the back pay check.

And even though she got that back pay check, it technically was not a retroactive payment.

In other words, on Social Security’s books, it’s as if she actually filed her claim on that past protective date.

Q: I’ve been reading your column for years, and I’ve read your Social Security book.

So, I think I’m a pretty good Social Security expert. I’ve got a friend who is 64 years old, and she recently started her retirement benefits. She told me she got a check for retroactive benefits. But I knew from reading your column and book that retroactive benefits can only be paid to people who have reached their full retirement age or older. So, I told her this couldn’t be, since she was only 64 years old.

But she showed me her bank statement, and sure enough, there was a Social Security deposit for about $8,000 in back pay benefits.

So how did that happen?

A: It all has to do with this protective filing date business. You are right that normally you can only get retroactive benefits if you are past your full retirement age. Or to put that another way, the

I’ve got a hunch your wife misunderstood what the SSA rep was telling her. Or possibly he just didn’t do a very good job of explaining the situation.

When your wife called the Social Security people back in January, they established a “protective filing date” of January for her. And that simply means that if at some point within the next six months she decided to actually file for benefits, she could start those benefits in January if she wanted to. It did not mean that she must start those benefits in January.

So, if your wife wants her benefits to start in June at age 65, she can have them start in June.

It’s just that she could decide to have them start in January if she wanted to. If she did that, she’d get about 3% less per month in ongoing benefits, but on the other hand, she would get a big back pay check.

The underlying cause is unknown, but your doctor might be right that anxiety is playing a role. However, it may run in families.

I disagree with nortriptyline in most people. Not only is it not a good treatment for anxiety, it may have excess sweating as a side effect, but the very low dose makes that unlikely.

Doses for depression are often 300 mg.

The usual first treatment is topical antiperspirants to the affected areas. If over-thecounter treatments don’t work, then prescription strength (20%) aluminum chloride hexahydrate can be tried, although it can be irritating to the skin of the face in some people. Other treatments include a different topical treatment called glycopyrrolate, botulinum toxin (Botox) injection and oral medications like oxybutynin. In people in their 70s and 80s I try not to use the oral agents.

Dear Solo: This is big concern for millions of older Americans who have neither a spouse, children or other close family they can depend on to watch out for their well-being.

While there’s no one solution to this issue, here are some tips and resources that can help you plan ahead: Essential Documents If you haven’t already done so, your first step before choosing a reliable decision maker is to prepare a basic estate plan of at least four essential legal documents. This will protect yourself and make sure your wishes are carried out if you become seriously ill or when you die.

These essential documents include: a “durable power of attorney” that allows you to designate someone to handle your financial matters if you become incapacitated; an “advanced health care directive” that includes a “living will” that tells your doctor what kind of care you want to receive if you become incapacitated, a “health care power of attorney,” which names a person you authorize to make medical decisions on your behalf if you’re unable to; and a “will” that spells out how you’d like your property and assets distributed after you die. It also requires you to designate an “executor” to ensure your wishes are carried out.

Choosing Decision Makers & Helpers Most people think first of naming a family member as their power of attorney for finances and health care, or executor of their will. If, however, you don’t have someone to fill those roles, you may want to ask a trusted friend or associate but be sure to choose someone that’s well organized and younger than you who will likely be around after you’re gone.

Or, if you need help with bill paying and other financial/insurance/tax chores there are professional daily money managers (see AADMM. com) that can help.

Also be aware that if your choice of power of attorney or executor lives in another state, you’ll need to check your state’s law to see if it imposes any special requirements. Golden Maize Dish Is Amazing Q: I have sent you a photo of a dish with a matching silver metal tray. I’m hoping you can explain the mark on the back and also tell me its value. I am in the midst of sorting out things that I have held onto for a long time.

The dish is decorated with yellow, blue and red flowers against a yellow background, and it is sitting in a silver metal tray.

The words marked on the back of the dish are blurr y and appear to say, “Golden Maire -- Made for Farberware -- by the Sebring Potter y Co. ---Sebring, Ohio -- Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. No. 230447.” It measures 11 inches in diameter and is in perfect condition.

I am 72 and have always remembered it from my mother’s home.

Q: This is the manufacturer’s mark on the back of a plate that I have. I bought it at a flea market at least 30 years ago, just because I loved the pattern. I am now cleaning out our attic and cannot part with it until I learn some of its histor y and value.

The plate is approximately 8 inches by 8 inches and has scalloped edges. On the right side is a woman in an 18th centur y style purple gown sitting near a table with a teapot on it and there is a tree with an English style cottage in the background. The plate is decorated with gold flowers against a white background.

pottery. “Lord Nelson Ware” was made by Elijah Cotton in Staffordshire, England, from 1920 to 1940. “Pompadour” is the name of a chintz warestyle pattern and was inspired by Madame Pompadour, a favorite of the French King Louis XV. Chintz was a type of cotton that was imported to France from India in the late 18th century. Madame Pompadour used the fabrics for clothing and decorating.

Your circa 1920 dish would probably sell in the range of $25 to $50.

A: The mark should say “Golden Maize” rather than “Golden Maire.” Sebring Pottery Co. made semi-vitreous pottery in Sebring and East Liverpool, Ohio, from 1887 to 1948. The Farber Brothers were located in New York City and known for their Farberware. Sebring made dishes in several floral designs and sizes for Farberware metal holders. The “U. S. Patent No. 230447” shows that the design was registered with the government around 1940.

Cave became the seventh national park and the first cave designated as such. With over 150 miles of passages, it’s the nation’s thirdlongest cave and the world’s sixth-longest. The entrance to the cave was discovered in 1881 by two brothers, who observed a small hole in the ground emitting a loud whistling noise. That small hole is the cave’s only natural opening.

• With 3.4 million acres of canyons, badlands, sand dunes, mountains and plant life, Death Valley is the largest national park in the mainland United States. It’s also the hottest, lowest, and driest place in the nation. And hot it is! July 2018 marked Death Valley’s hottest month on record, with an average temperature of 108.1 degrees F. (420 C). For four consecutive days, the daytime high topped 127 degrees F (530 C).

• Death Valley receives less than two inches of annual rainfall, which is 1.5 inches less than the Sahara Desert. Amazingly, six species of unusual fish manage to survive in the area’s salty waters and intense heat. The Devil’s Hole Pupfish exists in the waters of Devil’s Hole, in waters reaching 93 degrees F (340 C). These iridescent blue fish measure just an inch long and as one of the world’s rarest fish, are listed on the endangered species list.

• Oregon’s only national park, Crater Lake, is home to the deepest lake in the United States, and the ninth-deepest in the world. The lake was formed when a 12,000-foot-tall volcano, Mt. Mazama, erupted and collapsed some 7,700 years ago, creating a lake 1,943 feet deep.

It’s the fifth-oldest national park, established in 1902. It’s also one of the nation’s snowiest places, receiving an annual average snowfall of 43 feet. There are also hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the lake that heat up pocket areas to 68 degrees, while all other water at the bottom is 38 degrees, proof that the volcano is still active after these thousands of years.

Mirrors and reflective windows offer a great opportunity to inspect your alignments whether you’re at home or on the course. The objective of viewing your body from the side is to create a posture and alignment where you’ll see one leg, but two arms.
