• Spud Melin and Dick Knerr were college students in California in 1948. They made sling shots in order to lob chunks of meat at falcons in flight that they were training to hunt. They liked their slingshot design so much they decided to try selling them. They hit the jackpot when they placed an ad in the back of a comic book and immediately sold out. They formed a company and began to market not only slingshots, but boomerangs, swords, crossbows, and blow guns. They decided to name the company after the sound when a comic book character smacks something, or when a slingshot hits its mark, “Slap-N-Slam.”

• Meanwhile, in Australia, a gym teacher in Sydney was teaching her students to swing a bamboo hoop around their hips in a gravity-defying manner. The local department store began to sell them, calling the product Hula Hoops.

The novelty quickly caught on. Other retailers began selling them, and by 1957 over 400,000 had been sold. The Australian toymaker took his idea to the American International Toy Fair, where Spud and Dick secured the ownership rights. After it was demonstrated on the Dinah Shore TV show, they sold 25 million in the next four months. They followed this success with Superballs, Silly String, Slip ’N Slide, Hacky Sack, and many other toys. What’s the name of their company?

A: There have been several TV shows and

movies based on the “Hardy Boys” mystery nov-

els, but the one you’re probably thinking of is “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries” starring Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson. Pamela Sue Martin played sleuth Nancy. It aired from 1977-79.

The latest installment of “The Hardy Boys” streams on Hulu and stars Rohan Campbell (“Virgin River”) and Alexander Elliot (“Locke & Key”).

The books on which the series takes its name were first published in 1927, and Hulu’s version is vastly different. It takes place in the 1980s, which will inevitably lead to comparisons to Netflix’s “Stranger Things” series.

“The Hardy Boys” is a show that families can watch together, and we definitely need more programming like that while we’re all cooped up with the virus lockdowns.

A: He’s still around! After playing the Man of Steel in the 2006 film “Superman Returns,” Routh’s career seemed to fizzle.

Henry Cavill carried on the Superman franchise in feature films, but Routh actually continued in the role on television. He played Superman, and other roles, on the CW series “DC Legends of Tomorrow,” “The Flash” Brandon Routh and others. Next up as Superman is a recurring role as a cop on the new season of ABC’s “The Rookie.”

The Other Dog. No, it isn’t the latest salacious kibble out of Hollywood. At least not yet. It’s the excuse many people cling to in order to avoid accepting responsibility for their ill-mannered pooch.

But the other dog didn’t chew up the sofa cushions.

But the other dog never attacked the mailman.

But the other dog knew not to, ahem, “hug” the neighbor’s leg.

If that’s true, if the other dog really knew so much more, then you’re in great shape. All you have to do to get the new pooch up to speed is teach him all that great stuff you taught the other dog. After all, if you don’t teach him, he won’t know.

Then again, the other dog simply might not have shared the new pup’s appetite for upholstery, postal carriers and great gams.

It defies logic to believe any one dog will behave like any other dog just because they’re both dogs. Most dogs don’t instinctively know to stay off the BarcaLounger and out of the fajita meat.

Angel or devil. Sometimes in the beginning, it can feel like nothing more than a coin toss.

But either way, dogs, just like children, need discipline and guidance from their “parents” in order to become good citizens with whom the rest of us enjoy sharing space. In other words, we have to train them.

I’ve attended many dog shows in my time.

I’ve met beautiful dogs, groomed to the hilt, with textbook temperaments. I’ve met proud and dedicated dog owners who had dropped thousands on handling and grooming. I also met a 160-pound Neapolitan mastiff who pulled so hard on the leash that his owner couldn’t walk him and a 15-pound terrier who continually bounced off my kneecaps.

Beautiful show dogs, but still not trained.

Perfect teeth and bones and super-shiny coats, but still not trained.

A Holiday Gift Idea: My New Social Security Book!

First of all, let me wish a heartfelt happy

holidays to all the wonderful readers of my column.

I’ve heard from so many of you over the years. I’ve managed to help you understand Social Security a little bit better. And many of you have managed to brighten my days with your kind words about me and my column.

Some of you are new to the column because it just recently began running in whatever newspaper or publication you read. But many of you have been reading it for years. In fact, just today, I got an email from a guy who told me that he and his wife have been reading my column for 20 years!

And many of you old-timers have been asking me this question: “When are you going to write a book?” Well, I finally have! More about that book in a minute. But first I want to share a little story with you.

I’ve actually been toying with the idea of writing some kind of Social Security guidebook for many years. In fact, about 15 years ago, I had a book ready to go. I found an agent, and this agent peddled my book to a number of book publishers around the country. Finally, a big publishing house in New York bit at the book. I spent about six months going back and forth with various editors, constantly revising the manuscript, until we finally got something we all could be happy with.

Then it went to the managing editor of the firm for what was supposed to be a pro forma rubber stamp of the book. Instead, she threw a big wet blanket over the whole project and stopped the presses with this remark: “Why should we publish a book about Social Security when we know the program is going to be reformed next year and the book will be out of date?” That was in 2005. And here we are, 15 years later, and Social Security still hasn’t been reformed! So, anyway, my dream of publishing a Social Security guidebook turned into a nightmare. All that time. All that effort. All that work. For nothing!

I was so turned off by the whole affair that 1/16th pageanother book on the back I put any plans to write burner. I thought, I’ll just continue writing my col-

age 62 and full retirement age, the law puts a limit on how much money you can make and still get Social Security checks. The rules are messy and difficult to understand. This fact sheet explains them as clearly as I know how.

Fact Sheet No. 5 is “A Woman’s Guide to Social Security.” This has always been my second most popular fact sheet. Whether you are a working woman or a stay-at-home mom, by reading this fact sheet, you will learn a lot about your own benefits and any spousal or widows benefits you might be due.

Fact Sheet No. 6 is “Benefits for Children.” If you are eligible for retirement or disability benefits and have minor children at home, this fact sheet explains the benefits they may get on your account -- or, if you die, the survivors benefits they will be due. The fact sheet also explains benefits payable to children with disabilities.

Fact Sheet No. 7 is “Social Security Disability Benefits.” This fact sheet explains the two disability programs that are run by the Social Security Administration and gives tips about filing for those benefits.

Fact Sheet No. 8 is “Government Pension Offsets and Social Security.” If you or your spouse works for a government entity that does not pay into Social Security, or you collect a pension from another country, you should read this fact sheet. It explains the often-controversial offsets that affect any retirement or spousal benefits you might be due.

Fact Sheet No. 9 is “When Social Security Says You Owe Them Money.” If you have received a letter from the SSA telling you that you have been overpaid, you should read this fact sheet to learn how to deal with that issue.

Fact Sheet No. 10 is “Working After Your Social Security Checks Start: Will Your Additional Income Increase Your Social Security Check?” The title explains what this fact sheet is about.

The book also has two other helpful sections. There is a clarification of the “Top 10 Social Security Myths.” And the book ends with an explanation of what to do when someone getting a Social Security check dies.

But as I said, over the years, so many of you

have encouraged me to put that book back on the stove and onto the front burner. And that’s what I did this year. And now the book is ready. It was published just this week.

I call the book “Social Security: Simple and

Smart.” It is a collection of fact sheets that I have written over the years about various aspects of the Social Security program. Let me explain that. I get hundreds of questions from my readers every week (sometimes every day!). And as you might guess, I am frequently asked the same questions again and again! And over the years, what I did was develop various fact sheets that answer the most common questions that people ask or that cover the most common Social Security topics that people are interested in. So, instead of spending a lot of time answering these redundant questions with a long, drawn-out email reply, I’d send a fact sheet and say something like: “I wrote the attached fact sheet just for folks like you. It should answer all your questions.”

I have now put all those fact sheets -- up dated for 2021 -- into one place, “Social Security: Simple and Smart.” Here is an overview of those fact sheets and a little preview of the book.

You have a game set. Game and fish sets were very popular in the Victorian Era. Each set usually included a serving platter, six or eight dinner plates and a sauce dish. They were decorated with a variety of game birds in fields. Fish sets were decorated with fish in streams. As a rule, the scenes were hand painted. Sets that have been signed by the original artist are more valuable than those that are not signed. Flambeau China located in Limoges, France, made your set. They were in business from the 1890s to 1914. Similar game and fish sets were made in Germany, but are not as desirable.

Your circa 1900 game set would probably be worth $1,000 to $1,200.

Enclosed is a photo of a mixing bowl that I have. It is turquoise, in excellent condition and measures 8 3/4 inches in diameter and 2 3/4 inches high. Marked on the bottom are the words “Betty Crocker -- (Trade Mark) -- G M I.” I’m curious to know whether you can tell me anything about the histor y and value of my bowl.

Betty Crocker is the icon and trademark of General Mills in Minneapolis, Minn. She was created in 1921 to give a personal touch to its products. Her name was on its recipe books, electric mixers, bowls and coupons. In 1929, coupons were given with baking flour to be redeemed for savings on flatware.

Actress Adelaide Hawley Cummings portrayed Betty Crocker on TV from 1949 to 1964. She appeared on The Burns and Allen Show and for a while, she had her own show. She was on one of the first color broadcasts and made her “mystery cake.”

Your bowl is part of the Fiesta Ware line made by Homer Laughlin China Company and the letters “G M I” stand for General Mills Industry. It was also available in Fiesta yellow.

Your mixing bowl was made around 1940 and would probably be worth $50 to $75.

• In the 1960s the Johnson Shoe Polish company was looking for promotional ideas to sell their product. They wanted to run ads in newspapers and comic books with coupons that people would clip out and send in along with $1 in order to get a free prize. They needed a good idea for an item to offer, so they approached a promotional design company for help.

• The firm came up with an idea for a new game.

It included a large sheet of plastic which was laid on the floor, and featured big colored dots.

A spinner dial dictated the player's moves around the game board, while the game pieces were the bodies of the players themselves. They named the game “Pretzel.” When employees of the firm tested it out, it was so much fun that all the players broke into hysterical laughter.

• They realized they were onto a breakthrough in party games, so they took the idea to Milton Bradley, who bought the game but didn't like the name and changed it. Sales were poor at first and they were puzzled about how to market it.

• That all changed when Johnny Carson played the game on “The Tonight Show” in 1966, along with Eva Gabor, who was the star of the then popular TV series “Green Acres.” It didn’t hurt that Eva was wearing a low-cut gown and the game involved lots of bending. Both the studio and TV audiences loved the unrehearsed predicaments and mishaps, which produced steady bursts of uproarious laughter.

• The next day, department stores and toy shops all over the nation were flooded with requests for the game. Three million sold by the end of that year, and it still remains one of the most popular party games in America. What’s this game called?

Over Connected One of the modern concepts in the golf swing has been to keep the upper left arm “connected” to the body throughout the golf swing. Many high level players have been seen hitting shots with towels under their arms, or training aids that keep the arm pinned to the body.

Connection is specifically meant for the upper left arm and the side of the body. The intention of connection is to promote assistance in coiling the upper body in the backswing, and releasing the arm in the follow through.

Unfortunately, many golfers trying to stay “connected” have super glued the arm swing to the body. This over connection can restrict a free arm swing to the top and to the finish.

The arms need respective freedom at each point in the swing. If a glove where placed in the armpit area of each arm at address, the gloves should fall out at specific time. The right arm glove falls out by the top of the swing, and the left arm glove falls out in the finish. Do not try to keep the gloves pinched in the entire swing.
