• One of the Jews working under his protection was a man named Leopold Page. When the war ended, Page moved to America and settled in Southern California. He set up a shop on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills selling leather goods. • Big-name actors including Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson, and Warren Beatty auditioned for the lead role, but Spielberg decided he didn’t want a famous actor for the part. A relatively unknown actor named Liam Neeson had also auditioned for the part, and then went on to accept a role in a Broadway play. One evening after the play ended, there was a knock on Neeson’s dressing room door. He opened it to find a smiling Steven Spielberg, offering him the role as Oskar Schindler.

• Branko Lustig became the producer after showing Spielberg his tattooed serial number from Auschwitz on his arm. Leopold Page was employed as a consultant with firsthand knowledge of many actual events.

• Spielberg originally wanted to shoot the movie completely in Polish and German using subtitles, but he decided against it because it would detract from the impact of the images onscreen. The best places to shop are those with the most lenient return policies. Nothing sets the alarm bells off like an “all sales are final” sign. “Store credit or exchange only” isn’t much better. But full permission to return a lamp that deeply offends my wife’s sensibilities means full discretion for me to take it home and give it a whirl.

There’s a saying that the difference between involved and committed is like a ham and eggs breakfast: The chicken was involved; the pig was committed.

Recently, a man called me for advice about a problem that’s not uncommon. The dog is causing a rift in my marriage, he said.

He and his wife can’t have kids. She wanted a dog to fill that void. He went down to the local shelter and brought home a dog that looked a lot like their last dog. It didn’t take long for the couple to realize the similarities did not extend beyond the looks department.

The dog is phobic, unruly, unsocialized, fearful and completely without training. The husband now contends that they bit off more than they can chew with this beast. The wife’s response? He just doesn't understand the power of love.

Neither is quite right.

Love is powerful, but it’s not an education.

Several months ago, I wrote a column about how to handle Social Security matters when a loved one dies. I guess you all forgot to cut it out and paste it on your refrigerator, because I continually get questions about that topic. Here are some of the latest ones.

Q:

For Christmas, my wife got me a clever little booklet titled, “So I’m dead ... now what?” In effect, it’s a little journal I’m supposed to fill in with instructions to my wife and family about how to handle my affairs after I am gone. One of the sections is about Social Security. So, what do I put in that section? And just so you know, I’m 82, and I get $2,490 from Social Security. My wife is 78, and she gets $1,850.

A:

Sometime after your death, your wife is going to have to contact the Social Security Administration to file for widows benefits. She should call the SSA at 800-772-1213 to set up an appointment to file that claim over the phone or at your local Social Security office. (As a general rule, widows claims cannot be done online.)

How much will she get? At your ages, it’s easy. She’ll start getting what you were getting at the time of death. So, if you drop dead tomorrow (God forbid), she’d keep getting her $1,850 benefit, and she would get an additional $640 in widows benefits to take her up to your $2,490 rate.

And the issue of dealing with the last Social Security check always befuddles readers. So, here it is explained again. You have to start out by understanding two rules.

Rule No. 1: Social Security benefits are always paid after the month is over. In other words, the check you get in February is the Social Security payment for January.

And Rule No. 2: Social Security benefits are never prorated. So, you have to be alive every day of a month in order to be due a Social Security benefit for that month.

Here is an example. Let’s say you die on Sept. 25. The check that comes in October (which is the payment for September) will have to be returned. Actually, there is a pretty good chance the check might not even show up because banks are under instructions to return Social Security checks for deceased account holders. But let your wife and family know that if the check does appear in your bank account, the funds have to be returned.

People often complain about this lack of proration of Social Security checks. But what they don’t understand is it can often work to your and your family’s advantage. For example, let’s say you started your Social Security at age 66 and that you turned 66 on June 22. You would have received a Social Security check for the whole month of June even though you were 66 for only eight days of the month. Also, if you do die on Sept. 25, your wife is going to get a widows benefit for the whole month of September even though she was a widow for only the last five days of the month.

Because of this, the catheter usually needs to be kept in only for about one to two weeks.

During this time, medication usually is started to try to reduce prostate size. For most men, a benign (not cancerous) enlarged prostate can be treated with medication -- an alpha blocker, like tamsulosin, sometimes with a second medicine, like finasteride. If that doesn’t work, there are several surgical options.

His doctor needs to be sure that the enlarged prostate isn’t cancer. A physical exam and blood tests may answer that question; other times, a biopsy is needed.

There is no best treatment for everyone. It depends on how large his prostate is, any other medical problems he may have and the expertise of the doctor treating him.

In the United States, the options include a traditional surgery, called a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP); laser-based treatments; other heatbased treatments (microwave, water vapor ablation and radiowave); and even more newer treatments that are less well-studied.

In general, medical therapy is worth a try for most men before considering surgery.

Dear Tom: The Holy Grail in any progressive disease is to find it early enough to start effective treatment before irreversible damage has occurred. But recognizing the early warning signs of Parkinson’s disease is challenging because they’re usually subtle and can be easily overlooked, dismissed or even misdiagnosed.

While the cause of Parkinson’s disease is unknown, scientists believe genetics and environmental factors (exposure to certain toxins) play a key role.

Early Warning Signs

Parkinson’s disease is difficult to diagnose because there’s no definitive test to confirm it. Doctors, usually neurologists, will do an examination and evaluate a combination of warning signs, but symptoms can vary greatly by patient which often leads to confusion and misdiagnosis. That said, here are some of the key signs and symptoms everyone should know.

Trouble sleeping: Thrashing around in bed or acting out dreams – kicking or punching – when asleep. This is a REM sleep behavior disorder and one of the strongest and earliest pre-diagnostic symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Loss of smell: Not being able to smell certain foods very well like bananas, dill pickles or licorice. This too is one of the earliest symptoms.

I have enclosed a photo of a red cedar hope chest that belonged to my paternal grandmother. She was born in 1893 and died in 1977. She lived most of her life in Osceola, Nebraska.

On the bottom of the chest, there is a seal with the words “Roos Mfg., Co. 967 W. 20th St. Chicago.” There are copper brackets on the lid, and the overall condition is excellent.

Any information you can provide about this hope chest and its value will be appreciated.

Taylor, Smith & Taylor Co. made your Lu-Ray teapot in the mid-20th Century. They made semiporcelain in East Liverpool, Ohio, from 1899 to around 1972. Lu-Ray was one of their successful lines of dinnerware. They made complete dinnerware sets that were available in pastel colors that included Windsor Blue, Persian Cream, Surf Green, Chatham Gray and Sharon Pink.

Your hope chest was made by Roos Manufacturing Co., which was founded by Edward Roos in Chicago in 1871. He was born in Germany in 1848 and migrated through Sweden to the United States.

Hope chests have a rich tradition that can be traced back to a time when families arranged marriages and exchanged properties. Many young women had hope chests in anticipation of a future marriage. They collected bed linens, clothing, towels, needlework and quilts. In the Midwest, they were called hope chests; in Australia they were glory boxes; and called trousseau chests in Europe.

The early chests were hand made by craftsmen. By the late 1800s and early 1900s, they were made in factories. Roos Manufacturing Co. and Lane Manufacturing Co. were two of the more successful. Many chests automatically locked when the lids were closed and were potentially hazardous. A child could climb in, close the lid and be unable to open it. As a result, manufacturers quickly changed

Two to Ten Degrees Golf has many zones of success where the club or body doesn’t have to be in exact positions in order to be successful. For example, the upper body is in an address orientation where the spine should be slightly tilted away from the target. Because the right hand is lower on the club than the left, the shoulders should naturally be tilted uphill. In order to compliment the shoulders, the entire upper body should be tilted somewhere between two and ten degrees away from the target.

The golf shirt’s placard can serve as a great “reference line” for the spine when you look downward at address. Due to the body tilt, the placard should align toward the left instep. If the line points right sided, or outside the left foot, the upper body has drifted outside its zone of two to ten degrees of tilt.
