According to Healthline, potatoes are a high-carb food that provide several healthy vitamins, minerals and plant compounds. Also, due to their high satiety values, they may aid in weight loss and possibly help prevent heart disease.

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

BAKED POTATO SOUP

Servings: 10

4 large potatoes (or 8 small)

2/3 cup butter (not margarine)

Cut baked and cooled potatoes in half, scoop out all of the potato pulp, and set aside.

If desired, chop half of the peels to add to the soup later, and discard the remainder (there is a lot of potassium and nutrition in those baked peels).

When the milk mixture is very hot, whisk in potato pulp a little at a time. Add chopped green onion, sour cream and peels, as desired. Whisk well. Add cheddar cheese a little at a time, and stir until it is all melted. Add the crumbled bacon, and serve. Garnish with a dollop of sour cream, if desired.

POTATO WAFFLES

If you’re like me and love potato pancakes and latkes, you are going to flip for these potato waffles. You get to skip all of the calories and greasy cleanup from pan-frying by using a waffle iron. This recipe uses up your leftover mashed potatoes. I usually serve them with fish or chicken and sauteed apples. They also make for a great main course on a busy weeknight, served with sour cream and applesauce.

2 tablespoons butter 1 onion, chopped 1 tablespoon minced garlic 2 cups mashed potatoes 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 eggs, slightly beaten 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Melt butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir onion and garlic in the melted butter until onion is tender, 5 to 7 minutes.

• A much better table was later developed by Russian professor Dmitri Mendeleev, who arranged elements by order of increasing atomic weight. Today’s modern table is much like Mendeleev’s, except it orders by increasing atomic number. Mendeleev had the foresight to leave several cells of the table empty, in anticipation of future discoveries.

• Uranium was first discovered in 1789 by a German chemist, but, not being recognized as radioactive, it was used to color glass and ceramics, to give decorative glassware a yellow-green color. Its radioactive properties were discovered by Marie Curie in 1896, who went on to discover another new element, radium, two years later in 1898. By 1900, four radioactive elements had been identified, and were placed at the bottom of the table because of their greater atomic weights.

There is what is being called a “spinoff”

of “The Big Lebowski,” but it won’t be directed by the Coen Brothers. It will focus on John Turturro’s “The Big Lebowski” character Jesus Quintana and also will star Jon Hamm and Bobby Cannavale, with Turturro also directing. “The Jesus Rolls” will be in theaters starting Feb. 28.

Turturro has been getting accolades for another project of his, the HBO series “The Night Of,” which was John Turturro originally supposed to star James Gandolfini (“The Sopranos”) until his untimely death. It’s based on the BBC series “Criminal Justice.” Gandolfini is still listed as an executive producer for the American version for the work he did behind the scenes before he passed away. *** When will “Mindhunter” be back

Do Earnings After Retirement Increase Your Social Security Check?

Conventional wisdom has it that old folks are supposed to spend their retirement years sitting in a rocking chair and occasionally playing a game of Scrabble. But if my emails are any indication, that’s not what’s happening with today’s seniors. I constantly hear from people in their 70s and 80s who are still working. And they wonder if their additional earnings will have any effect on their Social Security check.

To understand whether or not the earnings you have and the taxes you pay after you start getting Social Security will increase your benefits, you have to understand how Social Security retirement benefits are figured in the first place.

Simply stated, your Social Security retirement benefit is based on your average monthly income, indexed for inflation, using a 35-year base of earnings. So, when you initially filed for benefits, the Social Security Administration looked at your entire earnings history. Then they adjusted each year of earnings for inflation. The inflation adjustment factor depends on your year of birth and varies from one year to the next.

Here is just one example. Let’s say Mike was born in 1949. And let’s say that he made $7,000 in 1970. When figuring his Social Security benefit, the SSA multiplied that $7,000 by an inflation adjustment factor of 6.58. In other words, instead of $7,000, they actually used $46,060 as his 1970 earnings when figuring his Social Security benefit.

Because there are literally thousands of these inflation factors -- depending on your date of birth and the year in question -- I simply cannot list them here. The SSA produces a fact sheet for each year of birth (for recent retirees) that lists these inflation factors. If you’re interested, go to https:// www.ssa.gov/pubs, and click on “Retirement.”

Then find the publication labeled “Your Retirement Benefit: How It Is Figured” for your year of birth, and open it up.

And now, back to our retirement calculation. After the SSA indexes each year of earnings for inflation, they pull out your highest 35 years and add them up. Then they divide the total by 420 -- that’s the number of months in 35 years -- to get your average monthly inflation-adjusted income.

Your Social Security benefit is a percentage of that amount. The percentage used depends on a variety of factors (explained in the publication referred to in the prior paragraph). But for the purposes of this fact sheet, we don’t need to know the precise percentage. Suffice it to say that for most people, their Social Security retirement benefit represents roughly 40% of their average inflation-adjusted monthly income.

So when you are working and paying Social Security taxes after you start receiving Social Security benefits, those additional taxes you are paying will increase your monthly Social Security check IF your current earnings increase your average monthly income. In other words, if your current annual income is higher than the lowest inflationadjusted year of earnings used in your most recent Social Security computation, the SSA will drop out that low year, add in the new higher year, recalcu-

Cabinet Is on the Cusp of Arts and Crafts Era

Your cream pitchers are similar to

many pieces of pottery that were made in several regions in Italy, including Deruta, Tuscany and Umbria. Many pieces were made by Deruta Pottery for the souvenir pottery market. Italian pottery often was marked with only the word “Italy.” Without the name of the manufacturer, it can be difficult to identify the maker.

Each was made in the mid-20th century, and each would probably be worth $25 to $50.

This is a photo of an antique oak cabinet that we inherited from my husband’s great-grandmother. There are four adjustable shelves on each side and behind glass doors.

The approximate dimensions are 60 inches tall, 17 inches deep and 50 inches wide. Other than being refinished, it is in excellent condition.

At first glance, your cabinet looks like

an example of Arts and Crafts furniture. The plain, sturdy design has the straight, unadorned lines of the Arts and Crafts era. The bulky curved feet are the giveaway. They are clues to late Empire Revival style of furniture that was made in the late 1800s, just before the advent of Arts and Crafts design.

It can best be described as a transitional piece. Your cabinet is versatile; it can be used as a china cabinet, a curio or a bookcase.

For years the chipping set up was taught with a series of mysterious and confusing elements. Point the feet way left. Put the ball behind the right foot. Lean most of the body weight left. All of which created an awkward looking system and typically low, screaming chips that ran off the green.

Modern tour players keep chipping quite simple. They aim slightly left or fairly square with their feet, usually a clubhead apart. No need to aim way left. The ball position is slightly back of center. This keeps the club from leaning drastically, giving the clubhead reasonable loft. The body weight is partially left sided, which again aids in a little more loft on the shot.

If you need a long distance, running chip that comes out hot…grab your 7 iron instead of the sand wedge. Clear out the confusion with a simplified chipping set up.
