• Will Ferrell endured several headaches and bouts of sleeplessness throughout the shoot, brought on by the massive amounts of sugar he was obliged to consume. Mistletoe has long been viewed as the romantic plant of the holiday season, but there are other sides to this vegetative icon that most of us aren't aware of, as you will see.

• In the wild the mistletoe plant is actually a

harmful parasite that attaches to trees, plants, and shrubs, drawing out their nutrients and water. Once a tree is infected, the mistletoe’s roots grow through the bark, up and down within the branches. New sprouts of mistletoe can grow from inside the host, weakening and eventually killing the plant. Its white berries each contain a sticky seed that attaches to birds and mammals for transmission to a new host.

When ripened, the berries can also explode, spewing seeds at speeds of up to 60 mph for more than 50 feet.

• Mistletoe also contains a poisonous ingredient

called phoratoxin, with a heavy concentration in the leaves. Ingesting the leaves can cause drowsiness, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and even seizures. Although the berries are also toxic to humans, mammals such as deer, elk, squirrels, and porcupines can ingest the berries with no negative effects. Birds including robins, chickadees, bluebirds, and doves can eat the berries during the winter when other foods are scarce, with no harmful problems.

• Yet for all of its negative properties, the European varieties have been used for centuries for medicinal purposes as a treatment for illnesses ranging from arthritis and hypertension to leprosy and infertility. In Europe, the extract of some types are even injected for treatment of colon cancer with positive results.

• The mistletoe is critical for the survival of three types of North American butterflies, the great purple hairstreak, the thicket hairstreak, and Johnson’s hairstreak. The butterflies lay their eggs on the plant, and the newly-hatched eat the leaves. The adults also partake of the plant’s nectars, along with a few species of bees.

• The name “mistletoe” has its origins in the

language of the ancient Anglo-Saxons. When the ancients noticed that the plant grew with a high level of bird droppings, they used their word “mist,” meaning “dung,” and combined it with “tan,” translating “twig.”

• As early as the third century B.C., the Druids hung mistletoe in their homes to keep evil spirits away and bring good luck. English women in medieval times tied the plant around their waists, believing it would enhance fertility.

During World War I, mistletoe was used as a symbol of peace, and was a common item pictured on postcards sent to soldiers during the war. It’s also viewed as a symbol of renewal because it stays green all winter.

• Legends differ as to how mistletoe became associated with kissing. In Norse mythology, the goddess Frigga and her husband Odin had a son, Balder, who was the god of love, peace, forgiveness, and justice. When Balder was killed by an arrow made from a mistletoe branch, Frigga’s tears of sorrow brought her son back to

A: Alex Trebek passed away from pancreatic cancer in early November, but he forged ahead during his struggle with the disease and filmed many episodes of the syndicated game show. From Dec. 21-28, “Jeopardy” will air 10 of its most classic episodes. The following week, beginning Jan. 4, 2021, viewers will get to see Trebek’s final new episodes.

T h e n starting Jan. 11, Ken Jennings, one the show’s greatest champions, will guest host. Other hosts Alex Trebek will step in shortly thereafter, but the names have yet to be announced.

According to “TV Guide,” executive producer Mike Richards said that “Alex believed in the importance of ‘Jeopardy!’ and always said that he wanted the show to go on after him.” ***

Q: Whatever happened to Rachel Griffiths from “Six Feet Under”? I was watching reruns of the series on HBO and realized I haven’t seen her in anything since, which surprises me because she’s a really fantastic actress. -- B.M.

She’s now starring in “Total Control,” a new series on the SundanceNow streaming service, playing an Australian prime minister who drafts an indigenous woman (played by Deborah Mailman) into the senate. The show has won several AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Awards) honors. When it comes to getting our dogs to come to us, some of us have some pretty funny ideas.

Over the years, I’ve worked with a multitude of dog owners who are bewildered that their rendition of “come” -- ranging from harsh to downright terrifying -- has the opposite effect of driving their dogs away.

Listening to these folks try to get their dogs to come to them reminds me of the rhyme from “101 Dalmatians”:

Cruella De Vil, Cruella De Vil. If she doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will...

But what often happens next borders on the absurd.

Frustrated by their failed efforts to get their own dog to come anywhere near them, they go after him. That’s right -- the chase is on! Through the house, over the couch, ‘round and ‘round the coffee table and then the mad dash under the bed where the dog, exhausted, collapses just out of reach.

There are a couple of things going on here that you might not realize and you definitely don’t want.

1) Your dog is afraid to come to you because of the tone of voice you’re using.

2) Your dog then learns that if he doesn’t come to you, you’ll chase him, and what dog doesn’t love a good game of chase?

There are a few easy changes you can make to get out of this cycle, should this scene sound a little too familiar.

First, pay attention to the tone you use whenever you say your dog’s name. Use a happy, positive, loving tone of voice every time you utter his blessed name.

Second, it’s time to issue the “come” command in the manner most likely to yield results.

Some trainers use the word “come.” Some prefer the word “here.” Still others prefer the German words “Hier” or “Komm,” which sound pretty much the same as their English equivalents. What matters isn’t so much the word, but the tone. For the most part, you’ll want to use a bright tone of voice, one that commands attention in a positive way.

Enclosed is a photo of a delicate berr y dish set that was given to my husband, who is now 88 years old, by his grandmother many years ago. The large bowl measures over nine inches in diameter, and the four individual bowls are more than five inches in diameter.

The set is decorated with white flowers, pale yellow soft orange flowers and green leaves.

The scalloped edges are green with gold trim, and the set is in perfect condition. Marked on the back of each dish are a crown and a crest and the word “Bavaria.” They all have the number “1796,” and the master dish has the number “69,” and the individual ones have the number “58.”

Bavaria was the location of many porcelain factories in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

A great deal of the factories included their name with their trademarks. Unfortunately some didn’t and that makes it sometimes impossible to identify the maker. Porcelain berry sets included a master bowl and usually had four to six individual bowls.

Most were decorated with transfer print designs rather than hand painted. “1796” refers to the set design and “69” indicates that it is the design of the master bowl, and “58” shows the dish is an individual bowl.

Your berry bowl set was made around 1900 and would probably be worth $125 to $150.

• The leaves of the poinsettia are not as poisonous as was once believed, and are not deadly to children and pets if ingested. One of the most common faults in many amateur golfers is a sliding hip action with little to no rotation in the backswing.
