• The film took eight days to shoot, and eight months to edit. During the eight days of the shoot, the three actors were taken out to the woods and dropped off with their camping gear and their video cameras, along with a steadily decreasing amount of food. Each day they hiked to a pre-programmed GPS location where they found a milk crate containing three cylinders, one for each actor, containing a rough outline of what was to happen that day. All the rest was entirely improvised by the actors. They stayed in the woods for the entire eight days without coming out for motels, meals, or hot showers.

In October of 1994 three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary...

A year later their footage was found.

HOT COLD-BREW COFFEE?

DEAR MARY: I’ve followed you for years, and I love all the tips.

Recently, I tried your instructions for cold-brew coffee using Trader Joe’s French Roast decaf, and it was delicious! I can’t have caffeinated coffee, but this worked out perfectly, although it’s a little messy, LOL!

My question is: Now that the weather is cooling off, is there some way to make this hot, short of making the cold brew and warming it up? It seems like that would defeat the purpose of keeping it more alkaline. Suggestions? -- Cheryl

Dear Lorena: The mushrooms are a good sign that your soil is alive and well. Really, there is very little you can or should do about them.

Mushrooms are just the fruit of something decomposing under your lawn. Mushrooms move nutrients from underground up to the surface. Most mushrooms are good for your yard, degrading waste products and returning them to the soil. The mushrooms will disappear once their job is done.

As for the aphids, I’d look to nature for the most effective solution: Ladybugs! You can buy live ladybugs at any garden center (or online with guaranteed live delivery) during the growing season in your area. Place the ladybugs in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes before releasing them in the garden. This will make them sluggish, so they won’t fly away before settling into their new home. Make sure you release them close to the aphid population. One hungry ladybug will take care of 50 to 60 aphids a day!

• While the # symbol is commonly called the pound sign and also used as the number symbol, its official name is an “octothorpe.” The origins of octothorpe are shrouded in mystery. Retta, who plays Ruby, one of a trio of felonious housewives on the NBC-Netflix series “Good Girls,” was born Marietta Sirleaf. She had planned on becoming a doctor, but took a detour after college at Duke University into the stand-up comedy world.

She had the blessing of her parents when she decided to drop her surname while she led the wild and Retta crazy life of a stand-up comedian.

Before “Good Girls,” Retta played Donna on the NBC comedy “Parks and Recreation.” She was hilarious, but playing Ruby has allowed her to showcase her fantastic dramatic chops as an actress.

Dog Talk with Uncle Matty

Petting a dog makes people feel better. It’s not in our heads, and it’s not wishful thinking on the part of dog lovers. It’s true science.

Petting a dog decreases levels of stress hormones, regulates breathing, lowers blood pressure and releases the hormone oxytocin, which is associated with bonding and affection. Medically speaking, people who pet dogs literally feel better.

But the comfort provided by dogs is not limited to the passive act of standing to be pet. Psychologist Debbie Custance of Goldsmiths College, University of London, led a study to determine whether dogs actively show empathy. Working from the observation that “dogs are social creatures that respond to us quite sensitively, and they seem to respond to our emotions.” Custance asked volunteers “to either pretend to cry or just ‘hum in a weird way,’” according to National Geographic, who reported on the study.

The response blew everyone away.

Pretty much every single dog approached to tend to the criers, even if they were perfect strangers. The hummers went unnoticed.

These are just some of the canine qualities that led people like Tim Hetzner, leader of the Lutheran Church Charities K9 Comfort Dogs team, to come to see dogs as “counselors with fur.”

Hetzner and his team of ten specially trained golden retrievers and their handlers traveled from Addison, Ill., to Newtown, Conn., the day after a demented shooter invaded Sandy Hook Elementary on December 12, 2012, killing 20 children and six adults and haunting an entire community.

Hetzner says the dogs “have excellent listening skills, and they demonstrate unconditional love. They don’t judge you or talk back.”

Turns out the “not talking back” bit is huge. According to Hetzner, “The biggest part of (the dog handlers’) training is just learning to be attentive and quiet.”

Custance underscores that point. “When humans show us affection, it’s quite a complicated thing that involves expectations and judgments,” she told National Graphic. “But with a dog, it’s a Cody's Corner: Turn to Page 10

She is becoming increasingly concerned that she may be in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s disease, and it has her worried. We are thinking that this is simply a common symptom of aging and does not mean she is going to get Alzheimer's. Dear Oldest Daughter: Many seniors worry about memory lapses as they get older, fearing it may be the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease or some other type of dementia. To get some insight on the level of your mom’s problem, here are some key warning signs to be vigilant of and some resources you can turn to for help.

Warning Signs

As we grow older, some memory difficulties – such as trouble remembering names of people or places or forgetting where you put your glasses or car keys – are associated with normal aging. But the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease are much more than these simple memory lapses.

Knowing the early warning signs is a good first step in recognizing the difference between typical age-related memory loss and a more serious problem. To help you evaluate your mom’s condition, here’s a checklist of some common early symptoms to watch for:

The screenings are given by healthcare professionals and take about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Once the screening is complete, the screener will review the results with her and let her know if she should see a doctor for further evaluation. To set up a memory screening for your mom call 866-232-8484 and make an appointment.

If you find that your mom does need further evaluation, make an appointment with her primary care doctor for a cognitive checkup and medical examination. Depending on what’s found, she may be referred to a geriatrician or neurologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating memory loss or Alzheimer’s disease.

Keep in mind that even if your mom is experiencing some memory problems, it doesn’t necessarily mean she has earlystage Alzheimer’s. Many memory problems are brought on by other factors like stress, depression, thyroid disease, side effects of

Vintage Dinnerware Made in Occupied Japan Q:

This is a photo of a set of porcelain dinnerware that belonged to my mother.

The set has 10 place settings, and each dish is marked “Occupied Japan -- Royal Embassy -- Atlanta.” There are no cups and saucers, and there are no salt or peppershakers. The borders are decorated with blue designs and gold. I have heard that “modern people” do not use them because gold trimmed dishes cannot be placed in the microwave.

I am planning to place the set for sale on the Internet and would like to know if $99 is a fair price. I appreciate your “being there” to solve these kinds of questions.

Your commemorative plates were made by Wedgwood in England at their Barlaston pottery. James McDuffee and Stratton Company, located in Boston, imported historical plates from Wedgwood for the American market.

The importing firm started in 1810 and became McDuffee and Stratton in 1871. By 1910, they were thought to be the largest wholesaler and retailer of china and glass.

The historical plates were decorated with American scenes of buildings, monuments, events, universities, ships, personalities and landmarks.

There were 48 Harvard views, and they could be purchased in a series of plates or individual plates.

By 1950, they no longer made historical plates and the firm closed in 1960.

Your circa 1941 plates would probably be worth $50 to $75 each.

Harvard University dishes were made by Wedgwood in England.

Anything marked “Occupied Japan” was made during the Allied occupation of Japan from 1945 to 1952 after World War II. “Royal Embassy” is the maker, and “Atlanta” is the name of the pattern. Gold trimmed dishes should not be used in microwaves. The care and maintenance required for vintage porcelain dinnerware trimmed with gold does not appeal to many younger people today, and as a result, the demand on the secondary market is limited. FYI.
