His boat was left where it remained grounded on the reef, a costly reminder of an unscheduled stop on an almost forgotten atoll. The Coriolis crew discovered that Caroline Island was actually located over 15 miles east of the position shown on the navigation charts.

Ever see a Rottweiler in a stroller? A Doberman in a tutu? A mastiff in a crib?

Little dogs bring out the goo-goo gaga in people -- namely, people who shave their legs. In return, these bald-legged types treat their pint-sized canines as if they personally gave birth to them: teensy outfits, miniscule booties, trips in the stroller swaddled in pastel blankets, tiny paws never gracing the ground.

It’s all so precious.

Personally, I like horse people. There is something about a horse that makes the people who care for them sit up and take notice that a horse is a horse (of course, of course).

Horse people prepare for the arrival of a new horse. They build something called a barn and fill it with stuff called hay. They divide the barn into stalls and ensure that the number of stalls is equal to or greater than the number of horses. They stock the barn with all kinds of horsey goodies: brushes, blankets, water buckets, feeders, saddles, stirrups, bridles, bits, reins and tie-down ropes.

And then, after night falls, mom and dad bring the horse inside, dress him in a onesie and tuck him into bed with them.

Oh, wait, that’s the dog people again.

Obviously, I love dogs. All kinds of dogs.

And I love people who love dogs. All kinds of people. But when people lose sight of the fact that a dog is a dog and not a small person with superfluous appendages and hypertrichosis, that’s when trouble comes knocking.

Toy breeds are allowed to bark, yap, nip, jump, crawl on the baby, tear through the house and relieve themselves on the floor because they’re cute and small and, in the case of the latter, “it’s just a little.” But a little goes a long way when it comes to the smell of urine in the house. And cute can only hold its own for so long before all the unwanted behaviors take their toll.

Pay your local shelter a visit, and you’ll find its residents are predominantly Chihuahuas and pit bulls, with a smattering of other breeds. Ironically, Cody's Corner: Turn to Page 8

massive hole in the hull. The boat immediately began to sink and was gone within a matter of minutes. The group of six had barely enough time to escape to an inflatable ten-person life raft and a small dinghy, taking little in the way of tools or provisions. They salvaged what items they could from the floating wreckage.

• They jerry-rigged a sail on the dinghy, tied a tow rope to its stern and used it to pull their raft.

They hoped to eventually reach the Galapagos, but winds and current pushed them east towards South America, drifting them into the most isolated part of the doldrums.

• On the third day, a flying fish flopped into their boat and provided a needed meal. On day seven a ship passed by within three miles, but even the use of their precious emergency flares failed to catch their attention.

• After 16 days their rubber raft began to tear and leak, requiring constant attention to keep it inflated. The dinghy then came loose and drifted away. Robertson swam after and retrieved it while being circled by curious sharks. On the 17th day they abandoned the leaking raft and all six crowded into the tiny nine-foot dinghy.

• They speared several large fish for food and dried the excess meat for storage. They harvested oil from turtles to use as skin lotion, and collected enough quantities of rainwater for survival. After spending a month adrift, they at least realized they would not starve or die of thirst, but would simply continue drifting until either finding a boat, or landing on a beach somewhere along the coast of Central America..

• On the 38th day they spied a Japanese fishing trawler headed in their general direction.

Robertson fired one of the remaining two flares and got their attention. They were picked up some 800 miles from where the Lucette went down. When rescued, they were carrying a twoweek supply of dried fish and rainwater.

• Robertson, who had been keeping a detailed daily journal in case they were rescued, recounted the ordeal in the 1973 book “Survive the Savage Sea,” on which the 1991 film of the same name was based. 
