Summer brings outdoor fun, warm weather and a closer relationship with Mother Nature and all her offspring -- including pests that can affect your dog’s health.

This time of year, vets see more dogs who are eating their normal fare but experiencing weight loss. This could be caused by a lot of things, but any dog who eats what he normally eats and suddenly starts losing weight needs to see a veterinarian. Among other things, this is a symptom of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis), which is caused by a parasitic worm that infests the pulmonary arteries after the dog has been bitten by a mosquito that has previously bitten an infected dog. The disease is life threatening and must always be treated promptly.

Other signs of an infected dog include coughing after physical exertion and labored breathing. You could protect your dog by avoiding exposure to mosquitoes, but that’s impossible if he goes outside when mosquitoes are in season.

So the best protection is preventive medication for heartworm, which can only be administered if your dog has not been infected.

Unfortunately, there is no protection against the West Nile virus, also carried by the pesky mosquito. Keep your dog indoors at sunset and during the early evening hours when those disease-laden pests are hunting for blood.

Puppies abound this time of year, and they start their basic vaccinations at about 6 to 8 weeks of age. Follow-ups continue every 4 to 6 weeks until the pup reaches about 4 months of age. Until that time, your pup isn’t protected from some of the more prominent and serious diseases -- distemper and parvovirus -- and it’s best to keep him out of dog parks and group obedience classes until he is.

Internal and external parasites are big problems, especially now. Beware of fleas, ticks, flies and lice, all of which carry disease and cause serious allergic reactions. Fleas also transmit internal parasites.

Federal Employees and Social Security

Q: I am a retired federal employee. I retired when I was 58. I started getting my federal retirement and Social Security at that time. I am about to turn 62. I was told that I have to contact a Social Security office and get my benefit changed. Can you explain that?

A: I’m going to start out by giving you half an answer. Then I’m going to give you and the rest of my readers some background information about federal government employees and their relationship to Social Security. After I do that, I will come back and finish answering your question.

First, here is that half-answer. You did NOT start getting Social Security benefits when you retired at age 58. However, you will start getting those benefits when you turn 62. Now, before I elaborate on that, I have to give a bit of a history lesson.

When the Social Security laws were first passed in 1935, Congress figured that federal government employees did not need to be covered by the new program. Why? Because federal employees were already covered by the civil service retirement system. That retirement program has been around since 1920.

Congress also decided that they could not force a federal pension plan (Social Security) on state and local government employees. So, they gave them the option of joining Social Security or not. Most did. And over the years, other state and local groups who did not originally join Social Security eventually signed on to the program. But to this day, there are still large blocks of state and lo-

Telehealth Use Soars

Use of the Department of Veterans Affairs telehealth video for appointments went up 1,000% between February and May. The VA attributes this massive increase to veterans guarding against getting or passing along the COVID-19 virus.

If you were one of the veterans who made use of the telehealth video for appointments instead of going in-person, good for you. And thank you.

For those who don’t know, telehealth is a program that allows veterans to have a video appointment with VA care teams (both physical and mental health) right on a device from home.

Telehealth (known as VA Video Connect) is probably one of the best ideas that the VA has had.

The program is so strong that it can handle over 25,000 appointments per day and is hitting other big milestones as well. Two million prescriptions have been refilled online in one month. Downloads at the VA’s app store went up 259% in one month.

Additionally, over 26,000 tablets have been distributed to veterans who need a device to access their care, with the major wireless carriers providing access with no data charges to veterans who need telehealth.

If you’re using telehealth and are incurring data charges, call your carrier and tell them you’re a veteran who needs the service to access your medical team. You might be able to get those data charges dropped. If you need to know more about that, go online to mobile.va.gov/app/va-videoconnect. The VA is working on restructuring the program so no veteran has data charges.

Stretching exercises should focus on the muscles in your neck, shoulders, arms, chest, back, hips, thighs, hamstrings and calves. If you’ve had hip or back surgery, you should consult with your orthopedic doctor before doing lower-back flexibility exercises.

While stretching, it’s very important to listen to your body. You want to stretch each muscle group to the point where the muscle feels tight. If it begins to hurt, you’re going too far. Back off to just before the pain begins, then hold the stretch for 10 to 20 seconds. Relax, then repeat it three to five times, trying to stretch a little farther. There are also senior fitness programs, like SilverSneakers (silversneakers.com) and Silver&Fit (silverandfit.com), that are currently offering online flexibility and balance videos that can guide you through a series of stretching exercises you can do at home. These are especially helpful if you're having to shelter in place during the pandemic.

There are also a wide variety of stretching exercise DVDs or videos you could purchase at sites like CollageVideo.com or Amazon.com.

Yoga and Tai Chi

Another great way to improve your flexibility is through gentle yoga or chair yoga. In chair yoga you replace the yoga mat with a chair where most of the poses can be duplicated. This goes much easier on tight, inflexible muscles. Tai chi and qi gong are also great exercise options for improving balance and flexibility.

To get started, there are many DVDs and videos that offer instructions and routines for seniors you can do at home. The YMCA has also launched a new series of free, online health and fitness videos at YMCA360.org that includes gentle yoga, chair yoga and tai chi videos.

There is no need for you to surrender to a life of limited mobility due to stiff muscles and joints when you can discipliine yourself to fight back by doing these simple stretching exercises on a daily basis - and staying with it.

It sold so well that use of roll-ons and creams diminished, and by the mid-1970s the vast majority of deodorants used in the U.S. were aerosols. But problems began to surface when fears that aerosol sprays might affect the ozone layer, and the aerosol market plummeted. It was then replaced by today’s infinite variety of pump sprays, sticks, and gels.

• Although the FDA classifies deodorants as cosmetics, antiperspirants are classified as drugs. Why the difference? Because technically antiperspirants alter the natural functions of your body.

• Aluminum chloride discolors clothing and is famous for turning T-shirts yellow. Blame the antiperspirant for the armpit stains, not your sweat.

• When rock star Kurt Cobain wrote the lyrics for Nirvana’s breakout song “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” he wasn’t aware that Teen Spirit was actually the brand name of a popular deodorant.

The Mennen Company, which produced the deodorant, wouldn’t say whether the song caused sales to spike, but six months after the single debuted, Colgate bought the company for $670 million.
