Our atmosphere is so widely dispersed that we barely notice it, yet its weight is equal to a layer of water more than 34 feet deep covering the entire planet. The sheer weight of the air actually compresses vital nitrogen and oxygen into our surface soil and water.

A lot of dogs -- and Madonna -- suffer from brontophobia, an irrational fear of thunder. Well, to a dog, a Fourth of July celebration is just a rapidfire succession of thunderbolts: loud and scary.

This Independence Day, do your dog a favor and don’t bring him to the party. Instead, follow these guidelines to keep your dog safe and comfortable on what can be a real fright night for our canine companions:

-- Take your dog outside to relieve himself before you leave the house.

-- Treat your dog to an extra-long walk or a strenuous game of fetch to burn off energy and wear him out.

-- While you’re out, leave your dog in a secure room in the house or, even better, in his crate.

-- Close all windows, blinds and drapes to help deflect the sound and the flashes of light.

-- Leave the lights on in his area to further dilute the flashes of light from fireworks or sparklers.

-- Surround him with his favorite chew toys and a soft blanket.

-- Keep your departure that night simple, without a lot of fanfare that could excite him or make him anxious.

-- Play music or keep the television on at a normal volume -- and tuned to a channel that will not be airing a live fireworks display.

-- If your dog must stay outside for some reason, make the extra effort to ensure all fences and gates are secure.

-- Make sure his tags are attached to his collar and contain current contact information.

By heeding these precautions and planning ahead, you can avoid the close call this family experienced last year:

The Social Security ‘Goody Bag’

At least once a day, I get one or more emails that start out with some form of this phrase: “I’ll tell you what’s wrong with Social Security!” And then they go on from there to trot out time-worn arguments that have been bandied about for years and are usually groundless.

One of the more common gripes goes like this: “I’ll tell you what’s wrong with Social Security.

They’ve added too many perks to the program over the years. If they would just get rid of the goody bag and take the system back to what it was when it started, we wouldn’t have any problems today!” Or, as another reader recently told me: “Today’s Social Security program includes too many freebies for freeloaders! We need to get back to basics -- to the law’s original intent!”

Well let’s think about that for a minute. The original Social Security Act, passed in 1935, included retirement benefits for people 65 and older who were totally retired. That’s it. Period. Nothing else!

So, if these “back to basics” naysayers had their way, that means we would have no early retirement benefits at age 62. Those millions of people getting early retirement benefit could kiss their checks goodbye because they are in the “goody bag.”

It also would mean we would not pay benefits to anyone 65 and older if they were still working. The original Social Security law required that you must be completely retired to collect benefits.

So, tough luck for all the working seniors out there.

Oh, and there would be no extra bonus for

people who delay taking benefits until a later age.

Millions of seniors currently plan to work until 70 in order to get a 32% bonus added to their checks.

Emptying the “goody bag” would mean turning off that incentive to delay retirement.

There also would be no benefits for spous es, widows or widowers. And if a young worker dies and leaves small children, tough luck. No government benefits for them. All these spousal and survivor benefits are in the “goody bag.”

And there would be no disability benefits.

So, if you have a heart attack at age 60, that’s just too bad. You would just have to wait until you are 65 to collect your Social Security, assuming you live that long.

I could go on and on. There are tens of mil lions of people getting Social Security benefits today who would not qualify for anything under the original Social Security law. Are all those people getting superfluous and unnecessary benefits out of a governmental giveaway “goody bag”? Or has the Social Security program evolved over the years to meet the changing needs of our society?

I think that’s an important point that needs

to be made. Social Security did not expand over the years because Congress was looking for ways to hand out “freebies to freeloaders.” The program changed because there were legitimate needs that people had and that a caring, compassionate society needed to provide. That’s why, today, we have Social Security benefits for working seniors, spouses, widows, orphaned children, divorced women and disabled workers.

In fact, let’s take a brief look at the legisla tive history of Social Security. It will be an abbreviated look because Congress passes amendments to the Social Security law almost every year. But most of those are relatively minor or technical changes that have no significant impact on the program or the benefits paid. Instead, here is a short list of the major amendments to the Social Security Act and

what those changes brought.

1935 -- the original Social Security Act: provided benefits for retirees at age 65 and nothing else.

1939 Social Security amendments: added benefits for dependent wives age 65 and older and for the minor children of retirees. Also added benefits to widows age 65 and older and to surviving minor children. Included benefits for widows at any age if caring for a minor child.

1950 Social Security amendments: added benefits for dependent husbands age 65 and older, and widowers age 65 and older.

1956 Social Security amendments: lowered the age at which a woman can get retirement benefits to 62. Also lowered the age at which a husband or wife can get spousal or widows benefits to 62.

Added disability benefits to disabled workers between ages 50 and 64.

1960 Social Security amendments: expanded disability benefits to a disabled worker of any age as long as he or she was “insured.”

1961 Social Security amendments: lowered the age at which a man can get retirement benefits to 62. Also lowered the widower’s age to 62.

1965 Social Security amendments: lowered the age at which a woman can get widows benefits to 60. Added benefits for surviving children between ages 18 and 21. Added benefits for divorced women if they were married for 20 years. Also added the Medicare program.

1968 Social Security amendments: lowered the age at which a woman could collect widows benefits to 50 if she was disabled.

1977 Social Security amendments: lowered the duration of marriage requirement for divorced spouses from 20 years to 10 years.

1983 Social Security amendments: raised the retirement age to 67 over a 50-year period.

Children’s benefits eliminated for those ages 18-21.

Added benefits for fathers caring for minor children.

This is just a summary of the major Social Security amendments. There have also been many technical amendments. In fact, one set of those in the 1990s led to the infamous maximizing loophole that really was something for the “goody bag.” It allowed many middle- and upper-class seniors to file for “dependent” benefits on a spouse’s Social Security record while saving their own retirement benefits until age 70. That loophole was shut down.

Or, to be more precise, you had to be age 66 before Jan. 2, 2020, to use the loophole.

At-Home Allergy Shots?

The Risk Is Too High

DEAR DR. ROACH: After giving myself allergy shots at home for years, my allergy doctor’s group has decided that it’s too dangerous for patients to do this anymore.

The allergy practice will no longer send a vial unless you can prove the shot will be given in a medical facility. Even if you are a nurse or doctor yourself, you still must prove that the shot will be given in a medical facility! Of course, there is a charge per shot if you drive across town to have the allergy practice’s nurse give it.

Not long after getting this notice, I read an article about a local child who has improved an insulin injection device. After the alteration, several more doses could be extracted. The article also mentioned children being able to give themselves insulin shots at school!

This is such an obvious money grab.

How can it be safe for children to give themselves insulin at school but too dangerous for adults to give themselves shots at home?

Do you know any reason for this change of policy for giving shots other than docs who can’t get more patients, so they bleed the ones they have dry? -- P.S.

ANSWER: Insulin therapy is very different from allergy shots. Insulin is routinely given at home, -work and school, and is very safe.

The epinephrine is used to both treat and prevent life-threatening reactions.

The guidelines from allergy experts clearly state that injections must be given under qualified medical supervision. Your doctor’s group was not previously following the standard of care.

DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you mentioned that your smartwatch warns you every hour to stand up. Is this a good idea? What else is it good for? -- D.K. ANSWER: The evidence that standing periodically has health benefits is fair. One study showed that when people did light-intensity activity (such as walking) for two minutes a day instead of sitting, premature death rates were reduced.

Prolonged sitting is associated with heart disease, diabetes and overall cancer rates.

The evidence isn’t definitive, but it’s suggestive enough that I do get up and walk around (when I can) when my watch reminds me that I’ve been sitting for a long time.

It’s not 100% clear that exercise trackers like pedometers and more advanced devices, such as a smartwatch, increase activity for everyone. It clearly does motivate me. I think it’s a personal decision that needs to be made based on whether you need more exercise (nearly everyone would benefit) and whether it would be motivating.

I will say that, for many people, the social aspects of it do get some people to exercise more than they would have otherwise. Some devices let you see your friends’ activity and engage in friendly competition and support.

Bugles Across America

There is no piece of music that elicits as much emotion as the 24 notes of “Taps,” the bugle call played at military funerals and ceremonies.

In 2000, Congress passed legislation saying that the funerals of veterans should have two members of the military present, one to fold the flag and one to play “Taps.” The problem has been that in too many places there aren’t enough buglers. Funeral directors turned to “Taps” played on CD in a mechanical device that’s inserted into a bugle.

That’s not quite the same thing.

Bugles Across America was started in 2000

by Tom Day as a means of gathering buglers who would attend the funerals of veterans and play real “Taps.” Since he started, Day has signed up 4,000 buglers.

Sounds like a lot, but it’s not, considering the number of veterans who pass away each day.

Even during this lockdown the BAA is receiving 20-30 requests for buglers every day.

You can help. All you have to do is play “Taps.”

The steps: Check the website at buglesacrossamerica.org. If you already play, brush up.

You’ll need to audition, in person, with your state’s director or another designated person from the organization. You can be male or female. You can play a bugle with none, one, two or three valves; a trumpet; a cornet or a flugelhorn. The instrument doesn’t matter, but your playing does. You must be very, very good with at least high school-level music playing experience.

• When Charles and Anne Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic from Maine to Demark in 1934, they carried with them a set of sticky oil-coated microscope slides, which they exposed to the atmosphere at intervals at an altitude of about 3,000 feet above sea level. The slides were studied to see what sorts of spores they picked up suspended in the air at some of the remotest spots on the planet. Large numbers of airborne spores were found to exist in every location.

• Spores of the common penicillin mold have since been found floating at extreme altitutes as high as 50 miles.

• Windstorms over Africa pick up huge volumes of fine sand from the Sahara Desert and carry it aloft over the Atlantic Ocean. It takes between five and ten days for dust from the Sahara desert to cross the sea to land in Brazil. Amazingly, this steady deposit of fine dust particles over thousands of years has made the rain forests possible by bringing vital calcium, iron, nitrogen, and potassium to nourish soils that are routinely stripped of nutrients by the relentless rain.

• Dust falling into the oceans also nourishes plankton by providing more than half of the ocean’s phosphorus. 
