• Spielberg took some license with the truth. For example, T. Rex teeth were actually bananashaped, but in the film they are fang-like and look more like shark teeth. In reality, velociraptors were only about the size of turkeys and were likely covered with feathers. The entire premise of extracting DNA that’s millions of years old is false because DNA would have deteriorated beyond use over that long period of time.

• The T. Rex’s roar was a composite of tiger, alligator, and baby elephant sounds. The Dilophosaurus roar was created by combining howler monkeys, hawk screeches, rattlesnake hisses, and swan calls. St. Helens (from page one) • The Spanish claimed that because Hernandez had been the first to sail through the sound, the Nootka area should belong to them. The English said that since they had been first to set foot on the land, the territory was rightly theirs.

The English built a fort there; the Spaniards seized an English ship in retaliation, and war was brewing.

• England sent an ambassador named Alleyne Fitzherbert Baron St. Helens to Spain where he successfully negotiated an agreeable treaty between the two. In 1794, the Nootka Convention was signed and both countries were given equal access to the area.

• When Captain George Vancouver of the British Royal Navy began an extensive exploration of the area, he saw a prominent mountain looming in the distance and named it after British Baron St. Helens. Therefore, Mount St. Helens is named neither for a saint nor for a woman named Helen; it is named for a peacemaking ambassador.

The buildup of activity attracted curious tourists and journalists to the area despite warnings by geologists of the possible danger that existed.

Nearby communities as well as the rest of the nation had plenty of warning that a major eruption was imminent.

• Geologists soon observed a 320-foot-high bulge appearing on the north slope, indicating that molten magma was pressing outward and creeping steadily forward at the rate of about five feet per day. The heat melted deep ice off the mountaintop and a nearby glacier, and groundwater boiled away in some places. An earthquake caused by the deep underground movement of magma suddenly triggered an immense avalanche that slid down the north face, taking most of the mountainside with it and exposing the white-hot magma underneath.

"Off-the-Charts" Pain Scale

DEAR DR. ROACH: Why is pain measured by numbers? I have severe pain, and doctors do not know what to do when I say it is an 11 on a scale of 1-10. My pain can’t be measured by numbers. It depends on the time of day, what I have done during the day and the weather.

I have arthritis in most of my joints, specifically my spine and hips. Having had five spine surgeries, epidurals and hip shots, I have pain every day. There is not much more that can be done but to take opioids.

It can be hard to make the decision either to take an opioid and go out shopping or for coffee feeling like I am in a mental vacuum, or to go out in pain.

There is no chronic pain support group in my area, and no one can understand how I feel, even the professionals, unless they have gone through it. So when asked how I am, I say “fine.” Other people don’t want to hear about my pain.

Why is there not another way the doctor can measure your pain? I have given up everything I love to do in life because of pain.

There’s no way to get “better” from pain.

Although the 1-10 pain scale is thoroughly entrenched, it has its flaws. The biggest one is that what one person might consider a two, another person might consider a nine. I’ve seen people with horrifying injuries gritting their teeth and saying their pain is a 3 while other people claim their pain from what seems to be a minor condition is a 10 (I had one person tell me the pain from getting his blood pressure taken was a 10).

Because pain is subjective, there is no way of standardizing what a person means with their pain rating. However, a 10 on a scale of 1-10 is supposed to be the worst pain imaginable. ***

pain. The clinic says it helps 85% of those who get the treatment; however, because of HIPAA laws, they don’t provide any referrals.

The treatments are very expensive ($16,000), and results are seen in six weeks to six months.

Are you familiar with this treatment, and is it effective for most people? Is this something you can recommend? -- D.B. ANSWER: I also have seen advertisements for stem cell treatments for many conditions. For neuropathy in particular, there are no good studies that give an estimate of effectiveness. It may be the case that 85% of people treated at the clinic report improvement. But the risk of a placebo effect is very high with this kind of procedure, and I could not recommend stem cell treatments for neuropathy without better information about the risks, the benefits and how long those benefits might last. ***

Normally, if you took money out of an employer-sponsored retirement plan or IRA before age 59 ½, you’d be hit with taxes and a 10 percent tax penalty on that amount. But the CARES Act waives the early distribution penalty on up to $100,000 of such distributions in 2020 for what the law calls “affected individuals.” You are, however, still on the hook for income taxes on any amounts withdrawn, but the new law allows you to pay them over a three year period.

Borrowers typically have five years to repay a loan or the amount will be treated as a distribution and taxed. But you also need to know that if you leave or lose your job, you may be required to pay back the balance early, or owe taxes and, possibly, an earlywithdrawal penalty.

This prevision also helps those with an existing 401(k) loan by allowing them to delay repayments that are due in 2020 for one year.

Suspended RMDs

Starting in 2020, individuals who turn 72 are required to take annual mandatory distributions from their tax-deferred 401(k) and IRAs. In prior years, this requirement kicked in after savers turned 70½ years of age. This is known as the required minimum distribution or RMDs.

The CARES Act suspends RMDs for 2020, including those for inherited IRAs, which means you can skip taking your required distributions this year if you wish.

The one-year waiver of RMDs will help retirees, who would otherwise have been forced to base their minimum withdrawals for 2020 on their account balances as of Dec. 31, 2019, when the stock market was at record levels. It will also give the market time to recover before resuming distributions in 2021.
