• Finding actors to play Oompa Loompas was a challenge that required a wide search. Six out of the ten were played by British actors but the others came from Germany, Malta and Turkey.

They ranged widely in age with the oldest being 70 years old at the time. One of them was a female.

• After completing his role as an Oompa Loompa, Rusty Goffe went on to many other roles, including parts in “Star Wars,” “Willow,” “Dr. Who,” and “Harry Potter.”

• Peter Ostrum played the role of Charlie Bucket in the film. At the age of 12, he was in 6th grade and acting in a play in Ohio when he was spotted by a talent scout, who took Polaroid pictures, asked him to read directly from the book, and returned a couple months later to ask if he’d like to move to Germany for five months to star in the film. Young Peter Ostrum became great friends with Gene Wilder, though they never saw each other again after filming concluded.

This was the only movie Ostrum ever made in his brief acting career. He grew up to become a veterinarian, specializing in treating cows in upstate New York.

No one and nothing is immune from a breaking point. Chemical substances have breaking points. Physical objects have breaking points.

Men and women have breaking points. And dogs are no exception.

A breaking point is defined as:

1. the point at which something or someone gives way under strain.

2. the moment of crisis in a situation.

Both definitions apply to the following scene as reported by a concerned dog owner:

“I have some concerns about my 18-monthold American Staffordshire, ‘Duke,’ and my two children, who are 4 and 5. Tonight, the kids were playing with the dog, and my 4-year-old boy pinched and teased the dog and obviously hurt him. My daughter was giving him a big cuddle at the same time -- and was probably also being a little rough.

The dog lunged at her with a huge bark, which to me sounded like an aggressive warning as if to say I’ve had enough. Is that a normal response to pain from a dog, or is my dog a time bomb waiting to go off?

“He didn’t bite her, but he did show his teeth. He mouths sometimes when playing, and he’s a big dog who could do a lot of damage if he snapped. He is very social with other dogs and people.

What is the best way to discipline this type of behavior? Or is it simply reason enough to give him away to someone without children? I just don’t know...”

Not knowing what you’re doing when you bring together young children and dogs is risky parenting. You’re gambling, and the stakes are high.

The first thing you should know is that all dogs -- regardless of size, regardless of breed -have a breaking point. Knowing that your dog has a breaking point is important, but it’s not an invitation to go looking for it.

As a parent, you have a duty to protect your children. The best way to do that is through intelligent prevention. And the most effective way to prevent a dog from biting your kids is to teach your Casey's Corner: Turn to page 8

The letter writer’s questions are off-base.

“What is the best way to discipline this type of behavior?” Whose behavior? The kids’? The dog’s?

The parents’? And “discipline” isn’t the ingredient that will bring this dish together. Education is what’s missing. These kids have not been taught how to properly handle and play with a dog.

That is not the dog’s fault. And it’s not the kids’ fault.

This kind of behavior toward an animal is unacceptable -- even abusive -- and many parents don’t even realize it. Kids are allowed to flat-out abuse the family dog, and their parents have this notion that because he’s the family pet, he won’t react.

Why is a dog expected to tolerate this?

Where is it written that “family” can treat a dog however they want and the dog will just put up with it? Everyone has a breaking point.

It’s important to understand the difference between aggression and a normal reaction to provocation. Duke might very well thrive in an environment without small children -- or even with children who know how to properly handle a dog.

A professional trainer or behaviorist can help make that determination. But if Duke is to stay in this home, everyone needs some good positive training.

But I probably answer the same 10 questions over and over and over again! And here they are. So, I’d like all you guys to clip out this column and stick it in your Social Security folder. (If you are getting Social Security, or anywhere near retirement age, I’m sure you have a Social Security folder.) By the way, my answers are going to be short and to the point, just so I can squeeze in as many questions as I can in the limited space I have.

Q:

I’m 62. My husband is 67 and getting Social Security. Can I file for spousal benefits on his record and save my own until I’m 70?

A:

No, you can’t do that. You always must file for your own benefits first. Only after you do that can you look to your husband’s record to see if you can get any additional spousal benefits.

Q:

I am 60 and not working. My husband recently died. Can I file for widows benefits now and save my own until I am 70?

A:

Yes, you can do that. A widow does not have the same restrictions that apply to a spouse with a living husband (as explained in the first Q and A). You can file for widows benefits now and then switch to 100% of your own at 66 or 132% of your own at 70.

These low-life scam artists are setting up official-looking websites selling bogus products and using spoofed phone calls, emails, texts, and social media posts as a ruse to take your money and get your personal information.

Beware bogus product offers: Ignore online offers for coronavirus vaccinations or miracle cures. As of this writing, there are no approved vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, lozenges, or over-the-counter products available to treat or cure coronavirus -- online or in stores.

If you see or receive ads touting prevention, treatment, or cure claims for the coronavirus, delete them. They’re fake.

But the con artists have already bought the stocks, which typically sell for a dollar or less.

As the hype grows and the stock price increases, the con men dump the stock, saddling other investors with big losses. It's a classic pennystock fraud called “pump and dump.” Making matters worse: you won't be able to sell your shares if trading is suspended.

When investing in any company, including companies that claim to focus on coronavirusrelated products and services, carefully research the investment and keep in mind that investment scam artists are just waiting for a crisis like this to make a lot of money off innocent people who buy into their lies.

• There are 21 states in the U.S. that are considered to be in the “salt belt” because salt is used to melt ice on roads in the winter, and salt speeds corrosion. In northern states like Wisconsin, it’s estimated that a car can lose up to ten pounds in weight every year due to rust.

• Computer servers on oil platforms in the North Sea off the coast of Norway are so prone to rust that they are kept in sealed rooms that are pumped full of nitrogen to displace the salty atmosphere. Anyone entering the room must don scuba gear in order to be able to breathe normally while tending to the sensitive computer equipment.

• When a couple of protestors decided to climb the Statue of Liberty in 1980, they discovered that their planned method of pulling themselves up the copper surface using suction cups would not work because corrosion had caused pitting that would not allow a tight seal. After their failed stunt, the statue was carefully inspected for damage the would-be climbers may have caused. As a result, they found the entire statue was literally rusting to death. Restoration soon began at a cost of $277 million (equal to $867 million today) and took six years to complete.

• In 2007, one of Minnesota’s busiest freeway bridges collapsed into the Mississippi River, killing 13 people due to aging, rusty rivets.

• In 1988, Aloha Airlines Flight #243 suffered a catastrophic failure when a section of the fuselage peeled off at 24,000 feet, killing one flight attendant before making an emergency landing. The cause was metal fatigue caused by corrosion. The plane was 19 years old and had operated in a marine environment during most of its service.

• In March of 2006, the Trans-Alaska pipeline carrying crude oil from Prudhoe Bay sprang a leak, which wasn’t discovered for five days.

About 267,000 gallons of oil spilled out onto the tundra before the leak was halted. The cause was corroded pipelines.

• In 1984, water leaking from a rusty pipe at a chemical plant in Bhopal, India, entered a tank full of chemicals, setting off a chain reaction that killed around 3,000 people. 
