Whether confessional, emotional, baby-like or all business, we humans talk to our dogs. And as those of us paying attention know: They talk back.

They talk with their tails, with their ears, with their eyes, with their posture, with their bodies, with their tongues and with their voices. And unlike we humans, they say exactly what’s on their mind -- no games, no mixed messages, no hard to get.

A woman called recently and told me her dog growls only when she kisses him goodnight.

Only when she kisses him goodnight?

Great. Stop kissing him goodnight. Problem solved.

That’s not what she did.

She kept on kissing him goodnight, every night, again and again, until he bit her. Eight stitches on the face later, and she’s ready to listen.

Her dog warned her. He told her to knock it off. He said with his growl: I don’t like it when you do that, and if you don’t stop, I’m going to bite you.

In truth, he probably said it in more ways than one. The whites of his eyes might have been larger than usual. His body and tail probably stiffened. He likely lifted his head, nose in the air, and gave her a wide-eyed sideways stare. But she didn’t hear any of it -- not even the growl.

When I asked her why she persisted in kissing him despite his obvious displeasure, she told me she loved giving him kisses and didn’t think he meant it.

Turns out, he did. They always do.

We can do our dogs and ourselves a great service by taking them seriously as the animals they are. And I don’t mean “seriously” as in all business, no play. To the contrary, play is an important part of being a dog. In fact, they employ postures and body language that say, “Hey, let’s play!” Recognizing a dog’s play bow helps dog owners distinguish between friendly play and a potential fight, say, at the dog park.

Taking our dogs seriously as animals means not pretending they are human. It means educating ourselves in the wonderful ways of dogs. It means learning how to communicate with them in ways they understand, and learning to listen to them in their many attempts to get their message across.

Social Security “Maximizing” Madness

Every week, I probably get a dozen emails from readers who tell me they want to “maximize” their Social Security benefits. So many senior citizens are absolutely obsessed with the notion that there is some secret to getting more money from Social Security that they don’t know about.

As I’ve explained hundreds of times in this column, the alleged “secret” that so many financial planners will dangle in front of you (usually as a lure to attend one of their seminars) is this: Wait as long as possible before claiming any Social Security benefits. And as I’ve also discussed many times in this column, that may be good advice for some, but not for everyone.

Still, all this talk about “secrets” and “maximizing your Social Security” has almost all senior citizens totally fixated on this idea that they are missing out on something or that they will make a mistake when it comes to deciding when to start their Social Security benefits.

In many ways, this makes me pine for days gone by. Back when I was taking Social Security claims several decades ago, no one worried about this. Most senior citizens generally filed for their Social Security benefits at 62, and they didn’t bat an eye or worry one little whit about their decision.

I’m not necessarily saying that was a good thing. Obviously, it makes sense to plan for your retirement, consider your Social Security options and make a decision about when to start your benefits based on the planning you’ve done.

But my point is this: Don’t obsess about it.

Almost no one who contacts me fretting about his or her Social Security choices is between a rock and a hard place, financially speaking. When it comes to Social Security, they are between a pillow and a soft place. No matter which way they choose to go with their Social Security start date, they will come out OK.

Here are some examples of the emails I get from stressed seniors. (Oh, by the way, I am coming at this from only a Social Security perspective.

I am 66. I would really like to start my Social Security benefits now. According to my latest estimates, I’d be due $2,660 per month. But my financial planner tells me I should maximize my benefits by waiting until I am 70. I just don’t know what to do. I’m so afraid I’ll make the wrong decision. Can you help?

A:

I can help by telling you this: Don’t worry; be happy. No matter which way you go, it sounds to me like you will be pretty comfortable -- Social Security speaking.

If you wait until age 70, you will get an extra 32% added to your benefits. So, you would get about $3,511 per month. That’s $851 more than you’d get if you start your benefits now. But of course, by waiting until 70, you would have lost out on 48 Social Security checks, totaling $127,680. So, do you want the $127,680 pillow? Or do you want the soft place down the road with the extra $851 per month? Pick one. As I said, you really can’t go

I recently filed for my Social Se 70. I let the Social Security agent age at curity talk me into taking a six-month-back paycheck. So, I got the big check, but I didn’t understand the consequences of my actions.

And now I am not getting my maximum Social Security benefit. I’m getting less. I’m losing sleep over this. Can I go back to the SSA and tell them I’ve changed my mind?

A:

In other words, your wife could file for her reduced retirement benefits now. She’d get about 75% of her full benefit. Then when you turn 70, you will start getting 132% of your own benefit. And at that time, your wife can file for spousal benefits on your record to supplement her own retirement benefit. Here is roughly how they will figure out what she would be due on your account: They will take her full-retirement rate and subtract that from onehalf of your full-retirement rate (not your age-70 rate). The difference will be added to her reduced retirement benefit.

Vitamin D Works Slowly DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there any reason to start taking vitamin D at age 90? I’m in good health except for osteopenia and high blood pressure. How long does it take to have an effect? -- P.S. ANSWER: In your case, there are potentially two good reasons to start taking vitamin D -- if your blood levels are low.

One is that with osteopenia (a condition of low bone mass, a precursor to osteoporosis, which increases risk for bone fractures), replacing low vitamin D can improve bone strength and reverse bone loss. This can keep people from needing other medications for osteoporosis, which are much more likely than vitamin D to have side effects.

Older people with vitamin D deficiency also often have some muscle weakness. If you can’t get out of a chair without using your hands and you have a low vitamin D level, replacing vitamin D may help with the weakness. Of course, there are many causes for weakness in a person and there is no guarantee of effectiveness, but vitamin D is very safe in moderate doses, like 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily.

Vitamin D also may reduce fall risk, probably by improving strength, especially in combination with exercise.

Vitamin D works slowly -- weeks to months for muscle effects, and months to years for bone effects. ***

Tidbits of Coachella Valley stenosis my primary care physician had diagnosed was becoming untenable and ruining my quality of life. Even though I am still seeing cancer doctors, I called my primary care physician to make an appointment to discuss the spinal stenosis situation with him.

After a long wait, I finally got someone in my primary care physician’s office and, after another long wait, was informed that he could not see me for six months -- there was not one opening until then. I was flabbergasted and asked to be put on a cancellation list.

“We don’t keep those,” the lady responded. I reluctantly took the appointment and decided to wait it out.

Meanwhile, I saw one of my cancer doctors today, and after explaining this situation to him, he replied: “Doctors don’t do that. He obviously doesn’t want you as a patient anymore. I would find another primary care physician.”

What is your response to this? I am 71 years old, and other than spinal stenosis and breast cancer (which was caught early and treated with surgery and radiation a year ago), I enjoy reasonably good health. -- J.E.Y. ANSWER: I hope there is another side to this story, since I am horrified that a physician would make a longstanding patient with cancer and spinal stenosis wait six months for an appointment. That is simply not appropriate medical care.

While I fully understand the point of view of your cancer doctor -- and would be tempted to find another doctor -- it sounds like saving the relationship you had with your PCP might be worth another try. I think speaking directly with your primary care doctor might clear up any misunderstanding.

Stay Safe With Virtual VA Medical Visits

President Trump calls it a war, and he might be right. The fight against this coronavirus has taken nearly all the country’s resources, as well as individual personal sacrifices. The Department of Veterans Affairs is on top of things, administering thousands of tests to veterans to prevent the transmission of the deadly virus.

The VA wants you to limit your exposure, especially when it involves going to a medical setting. If you’ve never used the telemedicine feature of VA care, become familiar with it now to make sure you’re set up should you need it.

Now, with the virus everywhere, you can make a telehealth appointment and talk to a medical provider electronically, without having to appear at the facility.

To have a video appointment, you’ll need either a computer, a tablet or a smartphone, as well as the VA Video Connect App. (See mobile. va.gov/app/va-video-connect). Scroll down to the yellow bar to test your device to be sure it’s compatible with the app. If you need tech help, call them at 866-651-3180 or 703-234-4483 on Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET.

To sign up on MyHealtheVet, go online to www.myhealth.va.gov and follow the instructions. Click on Register and enter your information.

You can make appointments, refill prescriptions, send secure messages to your care team and download or view your medical records.

You know what the virus symptoms are -we’ve all heard them a thousand times on television -- but if you have a cough, fever or shortness of breath, call your medical provider. Don’t just show up. Call to warn them you’re coming because they might have a special entrance for you to use, with staff in protective gear to greet you. Following their instructions will protect not only the staff but other veterans.

And no, it’s not a joke: Wash your hands numerous times per day -- every day. Get yourself in the habit of doing this repeatedly. The coronavirus enemy is sneaky and vicious. * * *

Sheraton Table Has Faux Bamboo Legs Q:

I have enclosed a photo of an antique table that has been passed down in our family for generations. It is walnut. It has one drawer and legs that have raised circles at regular inter vals. It stands about 24 inches tall and 34 inches wide. The finish is the original and in excellent condition.

The table was in the home where my father grew up in upstate New York. According to family lore, the table was originally higher.

Because the floors were washed with lye soap, it wore the legs down. Interestingly, the home is now a New York historical site.

My grandson has always liked the table and would like to have it for his home. I would appreciate any information you can provide.

This mark is on the bottom of a covered vegetable bowl that is part of a set of dishes that belonged to my great-great-grandmother. The set was given to her in 1919 by her mother-in-law. She was told it had been in her family for generations. All we have left of the set is this bowl. It is decorated with a blue and white pattern. Amazingly, it is in ver y good condition.

I am ready to pass it along to my daughter and would like to know more about the age, maker and value.

Your covered vegetable bowl/dish is an example of Flow Blue china. Josiah Wedgwood, located in England, was the first potter to make Flow Blue in the 1800s. The firing process caused the cobalt blue to run or bleed, thus the name Flow Blue. It was extremely popular, and large amounts were made in England, Holland and the United States.

Jacob Furnival and Company made your dish in Hanley, Staffordshire, England. The pattern is “Shanghae,” and this mark was used from 1845 to 1870. Other English potteries produced the Shanghae pattern, but they spelled the pattern “Shanghai.”

Your late-19th-century covered vegetable dish would probably be worth $125 to $225.

Your table with faux bamboo legs is an example of the Sheraton period of furniture. The turned legs are round and made to resemble bamboo by a cabinet maker. It is circa 1800 and was made by an accomplished cabinet maker.

The Sheraton period of design was from 1780 to 1820. Thomas Sheraton was an English furniture designer and cabinet maker. He was influenced by French King Louis XVI and Directoire styles. His later work was on the cusp of the Empire era and became a little more heavy in design.

English cabinet markers Thomas Chippendale and George Hepplewhite were peers of Sheraton. Cherry, maple and walnut were often used by American cabinet makers.

Unfortunately this article is not about ways to save yourself coin by finding the best online golf rate, but more about the little secrets of grip techniques that top players used to win a lot of money. Steve Elkington was considered by many of his peers at the time to have carried the title of “best looking swing on tour” through much of the nineties. His set up was beautiful and his motion looked poetic. For Steve it all started with a great looking grip that his coach Alex Mercer had taught him while a young boy in Australia.

Steve was taught to pinch together his thumbs and forefinger like he was holding a few coins in place. He even recollects walking to school in this fashion. By pinching the thumbs and forefinger together, he had to hold the club more in the fingers and his hands fit together quite beautifully. It takes a little training to use these small muscles of the hand, but it’s well worth it if you’re looking for a top grade grip to emulate.
