Some panels are known as DC panels because several of them are strung together and the current is inverted in a large piece of equipment. The Turkey Is Burning! and Other Disasters

I’ve had my share of Thanksgiving Day disasters over the years! Here are some secrets to saving your sanity and your Thanksgiving dinner:

Soggy Pie Crust Fixes

Sometimes, the top crust on a pie will cook faster than the bottom crust. If your bottom crust is underdone, cover the top with foil so it doesn’t burn and put your pie back in the oven at 425 to 450 degrees for about 12 minutes.

Make sure to put it on the bottom rack so the underside gets the most heat.

Alternatively, you can scoop out the filling and top crust and just bake the bottom crust by itself. That way, when it’s done you can pour the filling back in and make a crumb topping from the top crust. It may even look better this way if your top crust didn’t turn out great the first time.

How To Defrost A Turkey

You’ll need about four days to thaw an average size turkey in the refrigerator (about five hours per pound).

If you need to do a quick thaw, place the wrapped, frozen turkey in your kitchen sink or a large container like an ice chest. Cover the turkey with cold water.

Drain and refill the water every half-hour because as the bird thaws out, the water will get warmer. Using this method, the turkey will thaw at the rate of about a half-hour for each pound.

Preparing The Bird For Cooking

Remove the giblet package (neck, liver, heart and gizzard) from inside the cavity of the bird AND check the neck cavity. Some manufacturers place the giblet package in the neck cavity and others place it inside the cavity closest to the legs.

Most turkeys come with the legs already trussed (crossed and secured with a metal or plastic bracket). If you’re not going to stuff your bird, there’s no need to truss the legs. Trussing an unstuffed bird hinders the hot oven air from circulating inside and around the legs. This means that the dark meat will take longer to cook, and the breast meat will cook faster and probably dry out before the legs ever get completely done.

Did you adopt a dog during Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month in October? There’s some good news if you did. The Mayo Clinic has published a report of a large study (Kardiovize Brno 2030) showing why it’s to our benefit to own a pet.

When we own a pet, especially a dog, we have healthier hearts and a better diet. We get more physical exercise, and we see blood-sugar levels that are more normal. Pets reduce our level of stress and help us stick to routines. Dogs help us fight isolation and loneliness by providing social interaction when we go out. Owning a pet can lower our blood pressure, and we’re less likely to have diabetes.

However, despite the positives of owning a pet, there are concerns (and some solutions to them) to consider before we adopt:

* Can you afford the food and veterinary care a dog requires? Ask the local food bank if it provides pet food. Look for a vet who offers senior discounts. Keep an eye out for annual vaccination clinics for low-cost immunizations.

* If a shelter dog has behavioral issues because of previous experiences, do you have enough patience to handle the necessary training? Inquire at the local pet store about training classes for any dog you adopt.

* Can you afford the initial shelter fees for an exam and spay or neuter, as well as the adoption fee? There’s an organization called Pets for the Elderly (petsfortheelderly.org) in 37 states that will help seniors over age 60 to cover the costs of adoption.

* Are you able to walk enough to give a dog the amount of exercise it needs? Talk to a neighbor. You might find one that will be quite happy to walk the dog when you can’t. * * *

I usually like to have a theme to my columns. In other words, I will generally just cover one topic and present one or more questions from readers that are related to that subject. But every once in a while, I just like to open my email inbox and pick random questions to answer. Today’s column is one of those.

Q:

I am 79 years old. I haven’t worked in years, but last year, I did make some money on the side selling some of my antique furniture. And now I got a letter from Social Security telling me my own benefit is going up by $25 but my widows benefit is going down by $25. This makes absolutely no sense to me. What do you think I should do about this?

A:

You should just relax. It’s really no big deal. Let me explain to you what is happening.

Like many women in this country, you are getting benefits from two Social Security accounts.

You are getting your own retirement benefit, and you are getting some additional money off of your deceased husband’s Social Security record.

You didn’t give me the dollar amounts, but let’s just say that you are due $1,200 in your own retirement benefits, and you are also due $2,000 in widows benefits. As a general rule, when you are due two benefits, you don’t get them both. You just get the one that pays the higher rate. So in this situation, you normally would just get a widows Social Security check for $2,000.

But there is a rule that says if you are due anything on your own work record, you must be paid that first. So you are actually getting two benefits. You get your own $1,200 check. And you also get $800 from your husband’s account to take you up to the $2,000 widows rate you are due.

(Depending on factors too complicated to explain in this short column, some women would get two checks each month, and some would get both benefits combined in one check.)

Because you made some extra money last year, those earnings bumped up the amount of your own Social Security benefit -- you said by $25.

So, applying that to the numbers I used for my example, that means your own retirement check increased to $1,225. But that increase did nothing to your husband’s benefit amount (your widows rate).

It remains at $2,000 per month. So now instead of $800 in widows benefits, you are due $775. So your portion of his benefit went down. But you still end up with $2,000 in total benefits.

I read one of your old columns about Social Security disability. I am wondering this: Do those benefits go on forever? For example, if a guy has a heart attack at age 60 and starts getting Social Security disability and then manages to live into his 80s, will he still be getting disability?

When someone getting disability reaches full retirement age, those benefits are converted to retirement checks. But the dollar amount remains the same.

recently wrote about retroactive benefits. You said if a guy delays benefits until age 70 and then takes six months worth of retroactive benefits, he would lose 4%. Do you mean he loses 4% for the retroactive period, but his ongoing benefits would be at the full rate?

This photo is a close-up of a saucer that I have. It is 5 inches in diameter and has a small chip on the border. It is decorated with a floral pattern in dark purple; some of the leaves are green, and a few of the flowers are touched in

Your saucer was made by Thomas, John and Joshua Mayer. They made earthenware, china and Parian in Dale Hall Pottery Longport near Burslem, Staffordshire, England, from 1843 to 1855. They exhibited their earthenware in the British Exhibition in 1851, 1853 and 1855 and were awarded a medal in 1851. The pottery produced large amounts of mulberry ware, as well as flow blue and polychrome designs. Many of their designs were decorated with Asian motifs, landscapes and floral, romantic and historical themes. Flower Vase is the name of the pattern on your saucer. It was a popular design and used on a variety of pieces that included cups, saucers and dinnerware.

Your Mulberry ware saucer is circa 1850 and would probably be worth $20 to $25. ***

This mark is on a set of four dinner plates that we think originally belonged to our great-grandmother. They are decorated with the silhouettes of two men sitting at a tavern table. The background is a cream color, and each plate is trimmed in gold. For as old as they are, it is surprising that they are in mint condition.

The mark you provided was used by Hall China Co. The factory was located in East Liverpool, Ohio. It was founded by Robert Hall in 1903. The pattern is identified by two names, Sil-

houette and Taverne.

Although your plates were made by Hall China Co., both Crooksville China Co. located in Crooksville, Ohio, and Taylor, Smith & Taylor, located in Chester, West Virginia, made variations of the tavern scene. The pattern appeared on mixing bowls, salt and pepper shakers, dinnerware, mugs, baking dishes and fruit bowls. A plethora of accessories were made to accompany the pattern, including rolling pins, shelf paper, wooden-handled utensils and wax paper dispensers.

Hall China Co. was founded in 1903.

• Woodward died of a stroke in 1906. His wife Cora took over operating the company, and her son took over for her in 1916. In 1925, Woodward’s son sold the Jell-O Company to Postum for an exchange of stock worth $67 million -- not bad for a $450 investment.

Postum was later acquired by General Foods, who later merged with Kraft.

Every once in a while all golfers go through a stretch of poor putting from inside four feet.

These “knee knockers” sometimes become more of a mental hurdle than a challenge on mechanics or green reading.

Rather than trying to stick to a rigid set of principles on your form, try experimenting with an old school type of “pop” stroke to change things up.

Many golfers error with short backswings and long follow throughs on short putts, so try reversing the image with a shorter follow through. In fact, try hitting these short putts with roughly an eight inch backstroke (minimally) and then stop the follow through immediately upon impact.

There may be a tightening of the arms and hands to hold this follow through from going too far forward. You’ll be feeling like the stroke “pops” at the ball, rather than releasing through.
