• The widespread mass marketing of jelly in the U.S. began with Thomas Welch, who was a dentist, a minister, and prohibitionist in the 1800s. He felt it was hypocritical for churches to oppose the consumption of alcohol while still offering real wine for communion.

• In 1869 Thomas Welch discovered that pasteurizing grape juice would prevent it from fermenting while also giving it a long shelf life. He lived near Concord, Massachusetts, the birthplace of the Concord grape. He began to bottle grape juice in his home, and he launched a campaign to have churches use ‘Dr. Welch’s Unfermented Wine’ for communion, naming the

• Many customers still preferred paper bags because they would stand upright more easily in the trunks of cars. At that time plastic held just 25% of the market, but within the next decade that market share had jumped to 80%. Plastic bags were waterproof, able to contain up to 1,000 times their own weight, and they were easier to carry.

famous opening line by Dickens. You’ve just come home with a new furry companion, in some cases plucked from the jaws of death. In all likelihood, he’s latched on to you as his new best friend, the person he loves more than any other in the world.

It’s a great feeling. But there’s almost always more to the story.

Unless you live alone and prefer a solitary existence, your dog will have to get along with people other than you -- namely, your significant other, your children, neighbors, friends and extended family. If you plan to introduce him to the world beyond your home and yard, he’ll have to tolerate strangers, too.

The following two letters from readers tell the tale of two adoptions. I print them both here in the hopes that the writer of the first -- along with any readers experiencing the same -- will heed the inherent warning of the second.

The first reads as follows:

“I just adopted ‘Red’ a week ago from a woman who rescued her from a shelter. She is showing signs of fear aggression: She has growled twice while we were walking, once at a person rolling a suitcase, and once at a person bent over gardening. She has also growled while in our yard at people she could hear talking next door in their yard and also at the occasional inanimate object.

“Red plays well at the dog park and with my children. She displays no signs of food or toy aggression.

“I work full time and am concerned that I don’t have the time to train her properly for aggression issues. The growling was not disclosed to me upon adoption. Your advice would be appreciated.”

This next letter could be right out of Dickens, with his stories of children forced to endure abuses at the hands of unfeeling or unthinking adults. It is what some might deem a “cautionary tale,” and it’s what might happen should the writer of the previous letter opt not to make time in her busy schedule to

Attaining Your Age

A few weeks ago, I wrote a column in which I casually mentioned the obscure common law (not a Social Security law) that says that you actually attain your age on the day before your birthdate. For example, I will celebrate my 70th birthday on June 22, 2019. But legally, I will turn age 70 on June 21.

I said that from a Social Security perspective, that law usually doesn’t mean anything unless you were born on the first day of the month. For those lucky people, it can mean an extra Social Security check. For example, if you want your Social Security checks to begin at age 66, and your 66th birthday is Oct. 1, you legally attain age 66 on Sept.

30, meaning your first Social Security check will be for September, not October.

Well, that little throwaway point has led to lots of questions from readers. I hope answering them will help clarify the rules.

Q:

I was intrigued by your column about being born on the 1st. I will turn 66 on Dec. 1, 2018. When I file for benefits, do I have to tell them that I want my benefits to begin in November? Let me put that another way. Had I never read your column, I would have known nothing about that odd little law.

Would I have missed out on one month’s Social Security check because of that?

A:

No, you (and everyone else born on the 1st of the month) will be just fine. All you have to do is tell the Social Security Administration that you want your benefits to begin at whatever age you want them to begin -- in your case, age 66. SSA’s computers will automatically know that you legally turn 66 on Nov. 30, and you will get your first check for November.

A: Yes, that’s what the law means. So if

you want your benefits to begin at your full retirement age, that’s what you will tell SSA. And their computers will automatically figure out that you will reach that age on Aug. 31, 2022.

Q:

A: Well, you are right -- and wrong. I will

explain. If you look back at that column, you will see that I worded my explanation very carefully to say that someone born on Sept. 1 would get a check “for August,” not “in August.” You correctly pointed out that the August check is paid in September.

Without that little quirk in the law, someone turning 66 on Sept. 1 would normally get his or her first check, the September check, in October. But again, that law does exist. So there still is a one-month Social Security check advantage to being born on the 1st.

Q:

You said that someone turning age 66 on the first day of the month can get benefits for the prior month. But does that same rule apply to those of us whose full retirement age is not 66? For example, I was born on May 1, 1956. My full retirement age is 66 and 4 months. So I will be 66 and 4 months on Sept. 1, 2022. Does the law mean that I will actually reach my full retirement age on Aug.

Q:

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have breast cancer that has metastasized to my bones.

I know that there have been great strides in curing cancer at the original site but there doesn’t seem to be any work done to help when it has spread. Are you aware of any? I am 87 years old. -- L.L.

ANSWER: Once breast cancer -- and indeed, most cancers -- has spread beyond its original location (metastasized), it becomes much more difficult to cure. However, there have been significant improvements in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. Cure might not be possible, but a good quality of life for months or years is possible (half of women with metastatic breast cancer will live longer than two years).

The exact treatment depends on the pathology and receptor status of the cancer, and a plan needs to be individualized by an experienced oncologist.

I inherited this porcelain plate from my grandmother 30 years ago. It is about 9 inches in diameter, decorated with white irises and embellished with gold. Marked on the back is a crown between crossed lines and the letters “R” and “C.” Below the mark are two words that are blurr y. Rosenthal and Co., makers of this porcelain plate, was founded in 1879 in Bavaria.

Your plate was made by Rosenthal and Co. in the early 1900s. Philip Rosenthal founded his factory in Kronach, Bavaria, Germany, in 1879.

The illegible words are probably the pattern or the name of the shape and the name of the country of origin. Rosenthal often made white porcelain in shapes that were given a name. The shapes usually had scalloped or ruffled edges and were trimmed in gold. Some of the motifs were seashells, flowers, portraits, landscapes and fruit.

They were hand-painted by talented artists and sometimes dated.

Take another close look at your plate; it may have been signed. Rosenthal and Co. has used several names over the years and is still in business.

Your plate would probably fetch $25 to $50 in an antiques shop. ***

• Ethylene, a gas which is a byproduct of refining crude oil, was once burned off as waste until 1933 when two British chemists started experimenting with it. One experiment resulted in their lab blowing up, but later they found that if they added benzaldehyde and oxygen under pressure, ethylene molecules bind together into long, strong chains called polyethylene.
