Saying Goodbye

My pal Idol died last week. He was 11.

We humans console ourselves and each other by saying things like, “Well, 11 is 77 in dog years.” True, but that’s a mathematical conversion that does nothing to diminish my pain. It feels too short. Too soon. It feels that way in my heart and in my bones, but it wasn’t.

Idol was my big, beautiful boy. Whip-smart, playful and always there for me, it was my turn to go to bat for him. He was suffering from a degenerative spinal disease that left him unable to get up, unable to relieve himself. My wife and I made the decision to end his suffering. It wasn’t easy, but it was right.

We knew we were going to do it the next day, and you know tomorrow is going to come, so we said our goodbyes. My wife and I told Idol how much he meant to us, how much he had added to our lives. Did he understand that? Not in our English terms. But he felt our love. He knew.

The next day, we drove him to the veterinary clinic. We had discussed the whole thing with the vet beforehand. The procedure was painless. I held Idol’s head in my lap and told him how much I loved him, how much joy he gave me, how much he helped me.

And then I cried. Not like a baby, but like a grown man who had just lost his dog. That’s what we do when we lose someone we love. If love could be measured in tears, Idol would be pleased with himself. Then again, what makes dogs so special is that they don’t demand proof of love. They don’t quantify it or keep score or withhold theirs in an attempt to extort ours. They simply give it and give it and give it, never once making the obvious judgment that only a fool would let it go unrealized.

I’m proud to know this much of myself: I am no such fool.

I can practically track my life through all my dogs. I can think of no milestone or special occasion that was not intrinsically linked to the canines in my life at the time. I’m ever grateful for the albums crammed with pictures of great dogs alongside growing kids, and for the videos that

Widows Have Questions About Social Security Q:

I was getting my own Social Security. Then my husband died and they started paying me his Social Security and took away my own. But why did they do that? Aren’t they two separate benefits and I deser ve both?

A:

The law says if you are due two different Social Security benefits, you don’t get them both.

You only get the one that pays the higher rate. And if you think about it, the law makes sense. Without it, everyone in the country who is married or who has ever been married would get two full benefits -- their own and something from their spouse. So I would get my own Social Security check and I also would get a husband’s benefit on my wife’s account. And then she would get her own benefit and a wife’s benefit on my account. And then Warren Buffet would get his own retirement check and a husband’s benefit on his wife’s account. And Warren’s wife would get ... I think you see where I’m going with this. If the law allowed everyone to get every benefit he or she is due, the Social Security system would have gone belly up a long time ago.

And if it makes you feel any better, you are getting benefits from two accounts. That’s because the rules say if you are due anything on your own record, you will be paid that first, and then get any extra benefits you might be due from your spouse.

For example, let’s say your husband’s benefit was $2,000 per month and your own monthly retirement check was $1,600. When your husband died, you kept getting your own $1,600 and then you started getting an additional $400 from your husband’s account to take you up to his $2,000 rate. I know you just get one check for $2,000 per month and you understandably assume you are only getting a widow’s benefit. But again, on Social Security’s books, you are being paid on off of two records.

paid correctly. And I think I know why you are getting a higher rate than your husband was getting before he died.

You were right when you quoted me as saying that a woman over age 66 starts getting a widow’s benefit that equals what her husband was getting at the time of death. But I should have added a qualifier: I should have said she gets that “as a general rule.”

And you are an exception to that rule. Here is why. Even though you didn’t say, I bet your husband started taking his Social Security at age 62.

That meant he was getting an amount equal to 75 percent of his full retirement benefit. And that would normally be your widow’s rate. Because it is likely that the harms of screening outweigh the benefits, the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force has recommended against prostate cancer screening in general.

However, there are certainly cases in which I feel prostate cancer screening (remember that “screening” means that there are no symptoms or signs of cancer) is appropriate, which is why it’s important to have an individualized discussion of the risks and benefits of screening.

The chair seen in this photo is painted green and has a floral stencil on the back. My grandmother, who was born in 1872, said her mother used to sit on it to diaper and dress all of her 13 children. My grandmother was the youngest of the 13, so this chair is ver y old. It is in ver y good condition.

I have no plans to sell it, but I am curious about its age, origin and value.
