and amateur scientist named Jacob Schweppe refined Priestley's "bubbling" method by developing the first practical process for manufacturing carbonated mineral water.

• Schweppe set up shop in England to sell his product, but he soon found that he was much better at inventing than he was at marketing. It wasn't until Dr. Erasmus Darwin, grandfather • of Charles Darwin, endorsed Schweppe’s carbonated mineral water as a medicinal cureall, that his business finally took off and made Schweppe a wealthy man. He eventually sold his company at the age of 58 and retired. He lived comfortably until his death in 1821, after which he was honored as the "father of soda pop." Today Schweppe’s is owned by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group, and the Schweppe’s • brand is distributed around the world.

Georgia. Coca-Cola was advertised as being a “wonderful nerve and brain tonic.” Although the earliest mixtures did contain traces of cocaine from coco leaves to enhance the flavor, it was not enough to physically effect the consumer.

Despite stories that still circulate today, you would have had to drink a gallon and a half of the drink to get even the slightest effect.

In 1905 when the Pure Food and Drug Act required all ingredients be listed on the label, Coke began to remove all traces of cocaine.

Because of its negative connotation, they did not like the nick-name “Coke” and tried for years to get people to ask for the product using the full name. Not until 1982 did the company finally give in by proclaiming in their ads that “Coke is it!”

All across this great country, college campuses have welcomed a new class of freshman. These young people arrived with a lot of things, but financial literacy® was likely not one of them.

If I could spend awesome students, this is what I would attempt to cram into their heads and then pray that it penetrates their hearts:

That means you 1) have a written plan for how you are going to spend your money 2) you use that written plan like you would a road map, consulting it often, and 3) you use a site like Mint.com or a pencil and paper to record how you spend every nickel. Sallie Mae has a monthly budget worksheet you can print out to help you estimate your costs and keep expenses under control. Do not attempt to do this keepingtrack thing in your head. You are amazing, but don’t push it!

If you or your parents have paid for the school meal plan, you need to know how many meals are covered and then do something remarkable: actually eat those meals. If you’re eating pizza in your dorm room or driving through Burger King instead, you’re just throwing away money. It might feel cool to spend your money like that now, but you will regret it later.

DON’T BECOME A STARBUCKS REGULAR

I want to say never, but I’ll compromise a bit on this one. Seriously, the coffee at Starbucks or Coffee Bean or any other trendy coffee house is so expensive it nearly makes me choke.

Let your grandparents and others know how much you love Starbucks gift cards. They are anxious to know what they can send to you while you’re away. Then use the gift cards instead of your cash.

Think about it: If you spend $3 a day at Starbucks, that’s $90 a month. On coffee.

Multiply by nine to see how much you’ll buy in a school year ($810). You don’t want to spend your money that way. Buy an inexpensive coffee maker instead, and make it yourself in your room.

BUY USED TEXTBOOKS

The cost of new textbooks is going to be so shocking it will make you want to chew your hair. You can cut that cost in half at least by buying used books online or even renting them.

KEEP SEARCHING

Students who couldn’t secure a scholarship for the fall semester shouldn’t give up hope. Many scholarships have spring deadlines, so continue your search during this school year and next year. Just keep applying.

It Happened So Fast

For every adult who resides with both a dog and a child under the same roof, I have four words: It happened so fast.

But they are not my words. They are the words of Jesse Browning, whom you might know from The History Channel’s “Ax Men” reality show.

He used them to describe the incident that took his four-year-old stepdaughter’s life.

Ashlynn Anderson’s mother found her bleeding on the family’s front lawn near Astoria, Ore. One of the family’s Rottweilers was standing next to her. The little girl was seriously wounded and did not survive the Life Flight to Oregon Health and Science University Hospital in Portland. She died of loss of blood and injuries sustained during a dog attack.

A while back, the Brownings were a threeRottweiler family. But one of the dogs reportedly bit an adult family member and was subsequently euthanized. On the day Ashlynn was mauled, two Rottweilers and a Labrador were in the fenced back yard and she was alone in the front yard. It is not clear how one of the dogs got loose or what triggered the attack. Clatsop County Sheriff Tom Bergin said, “Apparently, the dog just snapped.”

I recently took two calls about aggressive dogs. The first was from a woman who adopted a dog six months ago. The dog recently bit her friend.

But, she told me, for the first six months he showed no signs of being a biter. He would just “growl and snarl and lunge and stuff.”

The second call was from a mother whose dog had just bitten her daughter’s friend. She, too, said her dog had never shown signs of aggression.

She summed up the dog as being primarily a backyard dog that had never been socialized. I asked her whether they walk the dog. She said no. I asked her how the dog reacts when people come over to the house. “Hackles up, tail down.”

She basically described a dog that could easily be triggered to bite.

Then I got this e-mail from a reader:

Flu Season Is Coming Fast

Beware! Flu season is just around the corner ... again.

Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a few things are new this year. Topping the list -- the vaccines have been adjusted to better match the viruses that are circulating.

Fluzone High-Dose is the one made for seniors over the age of 65. The vaccine contains four times the regular dose because we need help with developing a stronger immune response.

What’s concerning is that the high dose for seniors contains only three vaccines, not four.

Enclosed is a photo of an antique wicker chair that I have. On the back of the chair is a metal tag with the words “J. B. Van Sciver Co.” We think the chair has been in our family since the 1920s or early 1930s, and it is in amazingly good condition.

What can you tell us about its maker, age and value?

A:

Joseph Bishop Van Sciver, a Dutch American, founded his furniture company in 1881 in Camden, New Jersey. He began with a small shop that he soon outgrew. He expanded into a larger factory, added storage warehouses and opened showrooms in several Pennsylvania cities.

The Van Scivers had a fleet of delivery wagons that delivered furniture to Pennsylvania and South Jersey.

They made a variety of styles, from contemporary to colonial. By the early 1960s, the company experienced a financial decline, and it finally closed in 1984.

You have a Rozane tankard made by Roseville Pottery Company. George Young founded Roseville Pottery Company in Roseville, Ohio, in 1892. The pottery produced utilitarian ware and quickly outgrew the factory. In 1998, Young moved his operations to a larger facility in Zanesville, Ohio. Rookwood Pottery Company and Weller Pottery Company were successfully producing innovative art pottery.

Rozane ware was made by Roseville Pottery Company.

Young, not one to pass an opportunity to grow, made the decision to develop an art pottery line. In 1900 he introduced Rozane ware that was designed to seriously compete with Rookwood and Weller. Rozane’s name combined the first two letters of Roseville and first four letters of Zanesville, thus Rozane.

Rozane pieces were decorated with animals, Native American portraits, nature and portraits. Most glazes were dark and finished with high-gloss glazes. From around 1900 to 1924, the Rozane line included Royal, Mongol, Egypto, Mara and Woodland. Many pieces are signed by the artist/decorator. The number included with your mark “855” is a tankard shape/model number. The tankard shape was decorated with several different motifs.

Your tankard was made around 1914. The value seen on the internet covers a huge range, from $300 to $950.

• An independent firm using unbiased scientific methods found that 51.7% of people in a taste test preferred Pepsi, while 41.7% preferred Coke. Those with no preference totaled 6.6%.

Because of this survey, Coke changed their formula, making it taste just a little more like Pepsi. Everybody at Pepsi’s headquarters got the day off to celebrate when, on Coke’s 100th birthday in 1985, they announced they were changing the taste to a “New Coke” formula. The unpopular move was immediately rejected by consumers and proved to be a major marketing disaster. They quickly went back to their old recipe three months later amid much controversy and public scorn.

• Coke and Pepsi are not always at odds with each other. They were accused of cooperating in Japan in an attempt to drive Japanese soft drink manufacturers out of business. The Japanese bottlers retaliated by passing out fliers accusing Coke and Pepsi of dissolving teeth. At one point the rivalry became so fierce that Japanese plant workers began slashing tires on Coca-Cola delivery trucks. The issue was finally settled when both Coke and Pepsi agreed together to donate $700,000 to help Japanese bottlers become more competitive.

The lob shot that needs to land softly has been one of the most sought after game changers in amateur golf. While having a high lofted club has made this shot much easier, golfers still struggle with the techniques that top players use with seemingly ease and comfort.

The follow through or finish on these floating shots requires the left arm to fold, and the left wrist to hinge while the palm stays facing downward.
