Maybe it all started with Snoopy. The temper tantrums, the hysterical cackling laughter at his own jokes, that conniving competitive edge that was always there between he and his “master,” Charlie Brown. Or maybe Charles M. Schulz was like the rest of us in our tendency to project emotions and ulterior motives onto our dogs.

Since the advent of the ad industry, advertisers have successfully attributed emotions to dogs in an effort to convince consumers to open their wallets. One of the best examples is a commercial spot on YouTube that features a dog who becomes devastated upon spotting his “girl” with another dog. Stumbling onto the horrific scene of the two of them together, the emotionally distraught canine heads for the nearest five-lane freeway to put a permanent end to his misery.

But, alas, his plan is foiled. By an awesome set of Bridgestone tires.

Before holistic dog food, there was Chuck Wagon. They ran an ad in the 70s, narrated by the gentlest of grandfatherly voices, starring a cute little pup chasing after a wagon full of chow.

The spot closed with a voiceover reassuring dog owners: “Chuck Wagon. Next to you, what he likes best and needs most.”

Then AT&T ran an ad for its 3G network that highlighted the use of online social media in tandem with its high-speed network to return a lost pup to its adorable young owner. The final frame shows the dog bolting into the child’s arms.

And Travelers Insurance had a runaway YouTube hit with their “Prized Possession” commercial featuring a neurotic dog that just can’t get a good night’s sleep until his bone is safely in their hands.

The projection of human emotions onto dogs is much more than a capitalist idea. Dog owners do it all the time in everyday life. This isn’t to say that dogs have no feelings. But the canine set of emotions is much more limited and much less complex than ours.

Seniors in Bankruptcy

A recent study revealed that an increasing number of seniors are filing for bankruptcy.

Taking their assets and subtracting debts, these seniors have an average wealth of negative $17,390. If that wasn’t shocking enough, saddest of all is that, per the study, seniors who filed for bankruptcy had already struggled for five years trying to avoid it.

None ever expected to get to that point.

It wasn’t that long ago, per the study, that full retirement was age 65, and Medicare covered the majority of health care with only 12 percent of income going to out-of-pocket costs. Now full retirement age is creeping up, and out-of-pocket medical care is about 20 percent of income.

What also has climbed in recent years is the amount of debt we take with us into retirement. As you approach retirement, rule Number One should be to clean up and take care of your debt. Starting now, say no to taking out any sort of loans, giving cash gifts, or obligating yourself by co-signing for others.

James Sadler founded his pottery in 1882 in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England. He established a reputation for producing high-quality earthenware teapots. Brown Bettys were one of his earliest teapots and were made from red clay with a dark-brown finish. They are as popular today as they were in the late 1880s, and Sadler continues to produce them.

Carving Was Inspired

This antique chair and rocking chair are a set. It was purchased over 25 years ago at a local estate auction. Each has a wood frame, paw feet and an upholstered seat.

Both arms are decorated with car ved faces of winged females. Interesting to me is that the car ved faces are similar to the car ved face on the harp featured in the 1949 Judy Garland movie “In the Good Old Summertime”

I would like to know who made this set, when it was made and the value.

Sadler Company was family owned until the year 2000.

The pottery has used several marks including some that were embossed and others that were printed. The mark with crown above a Sadler banner with the words “Made in England” was first used in 1947. The numbers included with the mark usually refer to the pattern. Sadler was a familyowned and -operated business until 2000 when the pottery was taken over by Churchill China.

Your teapot is circa 1947, and it would probably be worth $25 to $50.

Your chair and matching rocker were made in the late 1800s or early 1900s. A settee was often included in these sets. Furniture of the turn of the last century was often decorated with lions, female heads, winged creatures, cherubs, dogs, bears, griffons and the North Wind. The carved winged female was probably inspired by the ancient mythical sphinx. She had the head of a woman, wings and the body of a lion.

Without a manufacturer mark or label, it can be difficult to identify the maker. Your chair and rocker set would probably be worth $200 to $400. ***

This mark is on the bottom of a teapot that I have. It is approximately 6 inches tall and decorated with red and pink roses.

There is gold on the lid, handle and spout, and it is in excellent condition. Also included with the mark are several numbers.
