To go truly archaic, though, we could start measuring things in flags, baronies, falls, roods, townships and hides. Yes, those are actual terms of measurement. They equal, respectively, 25 square feet, 4,000 acres, 342 square feet, a quarter of an acre, 36 square miles and 10 acres. * Do you suffer from misoneism? If you’ve ever experienced the heartbreak of shrinking your favorite pair of jeans to a length

by Mary Hunt that would make them perfect to wear to a flood, you’re going to be particularly fond of today’s first great reader tip. And like me, you’re probably going to wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

NO MORE HIGH WATERS.

DEAR MARY: While doing the laundry one day, I got to thinking that if cotton shrinks, it probably stretches, too. I decided to experiment on my kids’ jeans, thinking that if I could make the legs longer, we could squeak out more wear.

After washing, I laid a pair of wet jeans on a beach towel on the floor. Then I stood on the jeans and grabbed the hem of one of the legs. I carefully but forcefully began to pull up. I could feel the fabric stretching. I flipped the pants over and did the same thing to the other leg.

When I was done, I hung them up to dry.

After they were dry, I tossed them in the dryer for a couple of minutes to take away the stiffness. It worked!

DEAR MARY: When I’m making eggs for my grandkids, I pour the egg into a metal cookie cutter that I’ve spritzed with PAM and set on the hot frying pan. The egg cooks in the shape of the cookie cutter, and the grandkids love it! -- Margie

HERB CUTTER.

DEAR MARY: When chopping herbs like basil, cilantro or parsley, I use a pizza cutter instead of a knife. It cuts a large amount of herbs, and fast! -- Sharon

FRYING THE BEANS.

DEAR MARY: Like you, I roast my own coffee beans. But I’m not ready to invest in a coffee roaster, and I don’t have an air popcorn popper. So, I roast my beans on the stove in a cast-iron frying pan (with the windows open and lots of ventilation). Not only is the coffee delicious but the frying pan loves it. The oils in the beans give it a beautiful, smooth, seasoned finish that it never had before. -- Rosie

There are also some HOA’s who try to make it difficult for their residents to go solar, but with the Solar Rights Act of 1978, they cannot forbid it or force homeowners to move the system if production will drop more than 10%. They are also not allowed to compel homeowners to spend more than $1,000 on aesthetic additions.

Grownups say the darndest things.

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with a director of one our nation’s many humane societies. I asked him what single factor more than any other drives people’s decision to abandon their dogs to a shelter. He said, unequivocally: behavioral problems.

Then I asked him what he tells the people who want to adopt these troublemakers. He said, without flinching: I tell them the dog needs training.

I then advised him to take his own advice.

You see, he had called me because his 6-year-old Great Dane had been growling at his wife of three years and finally bit her in the face.

When I asked him what took him so long to seek help, he said the darndest thing: “He doesn’t do it all the time!”

Another grownup, this one female, called to inquire about her dog, who has bitten several of her family members and friends. I warned her that she’s going to get sued eventually, and she, too, said the darndest thing: “Not if he only bites my family and friends!”

A woman who runs a rescue later called regarding someone who had returned a dog because it bit her. She wondered what went wrong.

“Did the dog have a history of aggression,” I asked, to which that rescue worker replied: “Yes, but the woman said she’s good with dogs!”

I’ve never met a dog lover who didn’t think they were good with dogs.

The man with the 6-year-old 125-pound Rotweiller that growls at his kids believes he has a special touch with the canine crowd. “I taught him to sit and come. And whenever he growls, I say, ‘Bad dog. No.’”

I asked, “Does he stop?”

I think we all know that answer.

People with smaller problems are even less likely to cry uncle. It’s too late to become a veterinarian, so instead they imagine themselves dog trainers. These folks call to complain that their dog barks at the mailman or at the phone, or that he chews the furniture or urinates on the carpet.

I get dozens of emails each week from people who are getting advice from friends and neighbors about Social Security. And so often, what they hear from these probably well-intentioned folks is wrong. I’ve saved up some examples and will share them with you today.

Q:

I took my Social Security at 62 and so did my husband. We are now in our early 70s. I have so many friends who tell me that they plan to take spousal benefits at 62 and then at 66, switch to full benefits on their own record. And they wonder why I never did this.

Did I do something wrong?

A:

The only thing you did wrong is listen to your friends. I’m sure they are nice people, but they know absolutely nothing about Social Security.

With one exception, no one can do what they claim they plan to do. You can’t take spousal benefits at 62 and then later switch to full benefits on your own Social Security account.

What’s the exception? If any of your friends is a widow, she would have the option of taking reduced widow’s benefits as early as age 60. Then at 66, she can switch to 100 percent of her own retirement benefit. Or she can wait until 70 and switch to 132 percent of her own benefit. A widow’s other option would be to turn that around. Depending on the benefit amounts involved, it might be to her advantage to take reduced retirement benefits at 62 and then switch to 100 percent widow’s benefits at 66.

I have a friend who says that she is getting her own full benefit and she also is getting full spousal benefits on her husband’s Social Security record. But in some of your past columns, you said that a woman either gets her own benefit or her husband’s benefit, but not both. So who is right? By the way, I am not planning to sign up for Social Security until I come of age in 2020, but I am just making some plans now.

All my friends say I am not getting enough from Social Security. They say I should be getting half of my husband’s Social Security. But I get less than that. All of these women tell me they are getting half of their husband’s Social Security. What can I do about this?

A:

Your friend is NOT right. No one can get full benefits on two different Social Security records at the same time. But you are not quite understanding what I was explaining in those prior columns. If a woman is due her own benefit, she always will be paid that benefit first. Then if she is due any extra benefits on her husband’s record, she will get the difference.

Let’s look at an example. Say that when you turn 66, you will be due $1,000 from your own account. And then let’s further say that your husband is getting $2,600 on his record. You would be due $1,300 in spousal benefits from his account. You do not get $1,300 from him in addition to $1,000 from your own Social Security. You essentially get the benefit that pays the higher rate. In this case, $1,300. But again, the law says you must be paid your own $1,000 first. Then you’d get an extra $300 per month from your husband’s account to take your total payments up to $1,300.

I am about to turn 62. I am debating whether I should retire now and sign up for my Social Security, or wait until I am 66 to get a higher rate. My friends tell me to quit and sign up now because they say Trump has plans to cut Social Security benefits for future retirees. What have you heard about this?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old female. I had a left-breast lumpectomy (with some lymph nodes removed) about 15 years ago, leaving me with a much heavier right breast. I don’t know whether this plays an important role with my problem.

Since the surgery, I have had a problem controlling underarm odor. I do not use any aluminum-based products. I have tried vinegar, milk of magnesia and a deodorant made from milk of magnesia. Within a matter of just a few hours, I notice quite an odor, particularly in my right armpit, which gets worse as the day goes on. I do not perspire profusely, but do develop some underarm moisture.

Can you think of any reason this is happening, or any remedy that might work for me? I would appreciate your comments.

ANSWER: I would start by trying a nonantiperspirant deodorant. These are not aluminum-based and work well for most people.

If the deodorant doesn’t work, you should consider another old-fashioned remedy that you haven’t tried: baking soda. It changes the pH of the armpit and helps to keep it dry, and both of those things help get rid of odor.

Underarm odor is caused by bacteria that live on our skin; the sweat itself is odorless.

Thus, if you get rid of the bacteria, you can get rid of the odor. I have prescribed topical antibiotics on occasion. Some people have told me that an alcohol-based hand-sanitizing gel helps. It might be that it dries out the skin and also kills bacteria. I would be cautious about overusing this as a solution. The underarm is a sensitive area that can get irritated.

I’d be happy to hear from readers about other solutions for this common problem, and I will report back on the most successful methods. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe halitosis. I have had my sinuses, teeth and gums checked to see if they are the cause of the odor, but the dentist and ENT found nothing. I was referred by my primary doctor to a G.I. specialist, who found I had a sliding hiatal hernia, which was causing acid reflux.

He recommended surgery to push the stomach back into its normal position below the diaphragm. I decided to pass on the surgery.

He recommended taking over-the-counter medications such as Nexium, but after several days my lower back started to hurt, so I stopped taking them.

I am now reconsidering the surgery and was wondering if this is a good idea. Is it possible that the hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis? -- E.H.

Urn Earned a Special Place Q:

My elderly sister gave me a handpainted porcelain vase of hers before she passed on. It is about 11 inches tall and is decorated with pink roses and green leaves.

At the top of the vase are flowers in relief.

The handles and the lid are decorated in gold.

Marked in green on the bottom are the words “Hand Painted -- Nippon” and a wreath with the letter “M” inside.

I took it to an antiques dealer about ten years ago. He told me the vase is in remarkable condition and the gold is 24 karat gold and not worn in any way.

He also said it was worth a b o u t $350. It has been sitting in my hutch for about 20 years, The Morimura Brothers exported and I don’t porcelain from Japan. know how long my sister had it.

My vase is ver y special to me. Could you give me a little more information about its histor y?

A:

“Nippon” is the Japanese word for Japan. The letter “M” represents the Morimura Brothers who had offices in New York City and exported porcelain from Japan to the United States.

Because your vase has a lid, it is usually referred to as an urn. The mark you described was used from 1911 to 1921. Values for antiques have fallen drastically in the past 10 years. In today’s market, your urn would probably be worth $125 to $225. ***

Your dish may appear to be cut glass, but it is a high-quality pressed glass. “Nucut” was made by Imperial Glass Company in Bellaire, Ohio. It introduced the “Nucut” line in 1914. In the early 1900s, cut glass was in demand but very expensive. Imperial’s Nucut was designed to look like cut glass and marketed to those who couldn’t afford cut glass. Compared with pressed glass, cut glass has sharper edges; patterns are more distinctive; and pieces are heavier and do not have mold marks. It also contains lead and pings when tapped.

Tap a piece of pressed glass and you will hear a thunk. Hold a piece of pressed glass and a cut-glass piece to the light and you can see the difference.

Cut glass is clear and brilliant, and it sparkles.

Your Nutcut dish is circa 1914 and would probably be worth $15 to $25.

IKEA (from page page 3) • On Valentine’s Day in 2013, an Australian couple got married at an IKEA store in Sydney, Australia, after winning a contest to hold their wedding and reception there.

• In 2010 the company released 100 privately owned cats into a store that was closed overnight, just to film their antics. A team of five cameramen followed the cats around, and the televised video got huge reviews and a grand tour of all the departments in the store.

• Today there’s an IKEA museum in Almhult, Sweden in the same building where the first IKEA store opened in 1958. On display are many of the company’s famous products, ranging from the earliest simple items to complex modular homes -- and even meatballs. The displays include the the company's history along with uniforms worn by employees during its early years.

• The company celebrated its 100th employee to join the IKEA staff in 1959. Today, IKEA employs about 183,000 workers, and is the heralded as world’s largest furniture store. IKEA operates about 390 outlets in 43 countries and sells over 9,500 different products.

• With all of his international success and immense wealth, Ingvar Kamprad never forgot his humble beginnings or thought of himself to be elevated above anyone else. In an interview on his 90th birthday, he was wearing clothes he had purchased at a flea market and driving an old Volvo. He was once denied entry to a major event being held in his honor when he arrived via public bus. By the time Ingvar Kamprad died at the age of 91 in 2018, he was one of the world’s richest men. 
