• During the third century B.C., the ancient Greeks had developed one of the earliest known keyboard instruments called the hydraulis, or water organ. It consisted of pipes with a valve that would open when a key was pressed, releasing air forced through the pipe. In the 12th century, the keyed stringed monochord was improved upon until it became the clavichord, with sound produced by striking stretched metal strings with small metal blades. The 14th century brought the innovation of drawing wire made of iron, gold, silver, or brass across steel sounding plates. Even Leonardo da Vinci got into the act by designing a stringed keyboard instrument in the late 1400s.

Protection And Agression Are Not The Same Things

Not long ago, a woman called me, very upset.

She’d just dropped her dog off at a shelter - the same shelter from which she had originally adopted him only a few weeks earlier.

When I asked why she returned him, she described what were obvious signs of severe aggressive tendencies.

When I asked why she had taken him home with her in the first place, she said, “For protection.”

OK. “For protection” makes sense. A lot of people bring a dog into the family for protection. But protection and aggression are not the same things.

You don’t want your four-legged, iron-jawed protector protecting your home and belongings from you and your family. And you don’t want to have to protect yourself and your family from little Cujo. You are then prisoners in your own home, held captive by your own dog. That’s no way to live.

We all want to feel safe. And we all have our ideas of how to find that feeling of safety. Bigwigs hire bodyguards. There’s the home alarm system - just a notch above the car alarm in effectiveness. And some folks keep a gun near the nightstand - intimidating, but not for everyone. Still others - many, many others - get a dog.

If you’re leaning toward the latter, there are some things you should know and understand before diving in.

Above all, protection dogs should be social, friendly and loving - with everyone. What? What about growling? Snarling? Frothing at the mouth?

Protection dogs are not mean or scary.

They’re highly trained, physically conditioned and mentally alert creatures. They’re also incredibly loyal and loving - when properly trained and socialized and treated with love, praise and affection.

Protection dogs do their best work from inside the house. Left outside, your watchdog is vulnerable to the very people you want protection from.

Dogs will be dogs, and even the most sophisticated and intelligent watchdog finds it hard to resist a juicy sirloin. If some ne’er-do-well drops a sweet-smelling hunk of beef seasoned with arsenic into your backyard, your pal and protector won’t be around to help you when you need it. Date of Birth Issues

There are several key factors that make you eligible for Social Security benefits and help determine the amount of money you are due. One of the most important is your date of birth. Because you have to be a precise age to qualify for retirement benefits (e.g., 66 for full benefits or 62 for reduced benefits), you have to prove your date of birth to the Social Security Administration.

When I started working for SSA back in the early 1970s, this wasn’t always a simple process.

Many people retiring back then (these would have been folks born in the early 1900s) did not have a birth certificate. And I don’t mean they lost it or couldn’t find it. I mean their birth was never recorded in official government records. So we had to resort to creative ways to help people prove their date of birth. For example, we would search church, school or census records.

It’s a different story today. Almost everyone eligible for Social Security at this point in the 21st century was born at a time when births were routinely recorded with local, county or state government agencies. So providing a birth certificate to SSA is usually a fairly routine matter.

But today’s questions concern date of birth issues that are not necessarily so routine.

I always thought I was born on Jan. 1, 1955. And that’s what my birth certificate shows. But I was just told a ver y interesting stor y by a ver y old aunt -- my mother’s sister. She told me that I was actually born on the night of Dec. 31, 1954 -- just a few minutes before midnight. She said that the hospital administrators in the small town in Nebraska where I was born, in secret collusion with my mother, fudged the hour and date of birth on my birth certificate in order to make it appear that I was born in the first couple minutes of Jan. 1, 1955. I thus became the first baby of the New Year in our town. Apparently, the hospital got some much-needed publicity for their newly established birthing clinic, and my parents got several prizes from local merchants. My aunt told me that my mother was so embarrassed by her actions that she never told anyone except her sister (my aunt) this stor y. My mom took this secret to her grave!

Dear Curious: Each year, hundreds of thousands of Americans participate in clinical trials in hopes of gaining access to the latest, and possibly greatest, but not-yet-on-the-market treatments for all types of illnesses. But, you need to be aware that clinical trials can vary greatly in what their ultimate purposes are, so be careful to choose one that can actually benefit you, rather than use you as a guinea pig or a way to collect data for someone's marketing plan.

Here’s what you should know along with some tips for locating one that has the potential to help you: Clinical Trials

A clinical trial is the scientific term for a test or research study of a drug, device or medical procedure using people. These trials – sponsored by drug companies, doctors, hospitals and the federal government – are conducted to learn whether a new treatment is safe and if it works. But, keep in mind that these new treatments are also unproven, so there may be risks too.

Also be aware that all clinical trials have certain eligibility criteria (age, gender, health status, etc.) that you must meet in order to be accepted. And before taking part in a trial, you’ll be asked to sign an Informed Consent agreement. You can also choose to leave a study at any time.

Finding a Trial

Every year, there are more than 100,000 trials conducted in the U.S. You can find them by asking your doctor, who may be monitoring trials in his or her specialty. Or, you can look for them on your own at ClinicalTrials.gov. This website, sponsored by the National Institutes of Heath, contains a comprehensive database of federally and privately supported clinical studies in the U.S. and abroad on a wide range of diseases and conditions, including information about each trial’s purpose, who may participate, locations, and phone numbers for more details.

If you want some help finding the right trial, try ResearchMatch.org, a web-based resource created by Vanderbilt University that connects willing patients with researchers of clinical trial. Or, use the Center for Information and Study on Clinical Research Participation at CISCRP.org. Enclosed is a photo of a hot chocolate pot with six matching cups and saucers.

Each piece is decorated with berries, leaves and gold against a white background and marked with the word “Sevres.”

Sevres China Company made your hot chocolate set. It was located in East Liverpool, Ohio, from 1900 to 1908. The pottery had a series of names, beginning with Agner, and then F o u t s and Co., and then Agner and Gaston.

In 1887, it was the Sebring P o t t e r y, and finally it became Sevres Sevres China Company was located C h i n a in East Liverpool, Ohio.

It produced high-quality porcelain dinnerware and glassware.

Although the company began as a family business, it was sold several times and is now Rosenthal GMBH. It can be very difficult to identify the pattern. You could try contacting the Rosenthal factory, but doing so is frequently unsuccessful. Some collectors attempting to learn the name of their pattern have sent photos of their dishes and the marks to porcelain replacement services on the internet.

Rosenthal Glass and Porcelain Company was established by Philipp Rosenthal.

• The Steinway is the choice of 98% of concert pianists. A new Steinway 9-ft. concert grand will set you back between $160,000 and $200,000.

• At one time, the honor of world’s longest grand piano belonged to an 11' 8"-long instrument manufactured by the Charles H. Challen Company in 1935. It weighed over 2 tons.

• In 2005, at age 16, New Zealand teenager Adrian Mann decided to build a piano entirely by hand, working in a farm shed. Four years later, the result was an amazing instrument measuring 18' 7" in length. After a nationwide tour of New Zealand, the piano returned home to Mann’s workshop, now available for public view.

• The first electric piano was introduced in the late 1940s. Metal tines replaced the strings and an electromagnetic pickup head similar to those on electric guitars was used. Digital pianos were brought to the market in 1980.

Established in 1887, Yamaha, Japan’s first piano manufacturer, introduced its popular Clavinova digital piano in 1985.

• Canadian manufacturer Heintzman Pianos built the official piano for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Chinese pianist Lang Lang played the 9-ft. Crystal Piano for the first time at opening ceremonies. The instrument was later sold at auction for $3.22 million, making it the most expensive piano in the world. 

Two Club Timing Coordinating the swing to be balanced, rhythmic, and effortless will be a constant battle for any golfer over their career. It doesn’t take long to lose the swing’s internal timing, especially when playing competitively or in adverse conditions (under pressure). Typically, the body movements get rushed and the arms don’t have time to make their normal, full movements. Your swing can be said to be “out of sync”.

One of the best reminders of rhythm and timing is a drill requiring the swing of two separate clubs in each hand. Typically players will use mid irons to perform this drill. Trying to slowly swing two clubs at once will force your arms and body to take a little extra time and coordination so the clubs don’t crash along the way. As you gain confidence with this drill, try swinging them faster until you’re at 60-75% of normal effort or speed. Try hitting balls directly afterward while performing a similar effort level, rhythm, and balance.
