Before I go over your options, I must explain some general rules about benefits payable to children and spouses. Your daughter will be eligible for benefits on your record until she is 18 years old. Your wife is also due benefits as the mother of your minor child. However, her benefits end when your daughter turns 16.

And there is one other general rule you need to understand. Each dependent is due an amount equal to 50 percent of your age 66 rate.

However, the law sets a limit as to how much money can be paid to a family with children on any one Social Security record. The rules involving this socalled “family maximum” rate can get a little convoluted. But for the purposes of this column, I’m going to use the most common numbers and say that the most that can be paid on your record is 150 percent of your age 66 rate.

So now let’s look at the number and your options.

Spinet Desks Were Made in Early 1900s

The letter “M” in the wreath represents the Morimura brothers. They produced china in Japan around 1876 and established retail offices in New York City. In 1904, they founded Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd. in Noritake, Japan, which was located near Nogoya, Japan, on the island of Honshu. The area was teeming with both rich clay and also talented potters. The Morimura brothers imported china to the United States and provided blanks for decorating firms. The mark you provided was used from 1933 to 1953.

Many Noritake china sets were brought back to the U.S. by men serving in the military in the 1950s. Values for these sets are modest. Your service for 12 would probably be worth $250 to $500.

I was told the desk seen in this photo is a piano desk. The top lifts up to reveal a flat writing surface, a drawer and shelves.

When closed, the top is flat and can be used as a table. It stands about 32 inches tall, is 32 inches long and 18 inches deep. I’m not sure what wood was used. The finish is original. We have a chair with a rush seat that has always been used with the desk. Neither the desk nor the chair has a manufacturer mark.

I hope you can provide some information on the histor y, age and value of both pieces.

You have a spinet desk that was made some time between 1920 and 1940. The design was inspired by small colonial pianos or harpsichords.

They are also referred to as ladies’ desks or writing desks. In the early 1800s, when spinet piano or harpsichord wires wore out, the frames were gutted and converted to desks, thus the name spinet desk. Many similar desks in the early 1900s were made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As a rule, they were made of mahogany, walnut or maple.
