Back Surgery Comes With No Guarantees

DEAR DR. ROACH: An MRI showed that I have severe stenosis of my C6 vertebrae. I have pins-and-needles sensations that often go down my right arm and in the neck area of my left shoulder.

I saw an orthopedic surgeon, who stated that he could “cure” my stenosis with a laminectomy surgery. Based on his recommendation, I have completed a six-day pack of prednisone and four weeks of physical therapy, with little diminishment of my symptoms. I am now taking Celebrex daily.

I have spent hours going through the various medical journals online, but could not locate any journal article that summarizes the prognosis of this surgery. Do you know of any research that discusses the post-surgery results, including the degree to which symptoms are reduced and what percent of patients require further surgical interventions?

It would be informative to know if there are any other options if PT has provided little benefit. -- J.N.U. ANSWER: As physicians, we like to practice evidence-based medicine, but the sad fact is that evidence to help guide us often is lacking, so we are left with our own education, training and clinical experience to make those decisions.

In this situation, we have a few studies to help us. The most-cited one, an analysis of two randomized, controlled trials, showed a faster improvement from surgery, but no difference in symptoms one or three years after surgery in the operation group, compared with the medication and physical therapy group. Several more-recent observational trials have shown significant improvement in pain and movement after surgery.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of a number of different things to help acid reflux.

Does raising the head of your bed fit into that category, and if so, by how much? -- T.E.D. ANSWER: Yes, raising the head of the bed can reduce symptoms of acid reflux. The traditional method is a brick or two under the head of the bed, but a wedge-shaped pillow works too.

Using lots of regular pillows usually does not.

It worked. The color of the kernels was shifted to a lighter yellow, and the leaves became a darker green. The line now included butter dishes, shakers, teapots, pitchers, casseroles, bowls, platters, cookie jars, creamers, sugar bowls and snack sets.

Enclosed is picture of an 8-cent airmail stamp. It belonged to my husband’s father, who is now deceased. It has never been used and is in mint condition.

Does this stamp have any value?

Your stamp features a plane flying over the United States Capitol dome. It was issued on Dec. 5, 1962, by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing. They used the rotary press printer method. The color is carmine. In 1962, a book of 25 stamps sold for $2. The first United States Post Office airmail stamp was issued in 1918.

A single circa-1962 airmail stamp can be seen selling on the internet for 45 to 50 cents plus shipping.

Not all pieces were marked; some had only paper labels, and some were marked with “U.S.A.” The early pieces are in more demand with collectors than the late “Corn Queen” line. Several other potteries jumped on the bandwagon and made similar corn-inspired dinnerware. They are not as desirable with collectors and can easily be distinguished from the Shawnee Pottery pieces.

This mark is on the bottom of a covered casserole dish that was part of a set my mother had in the 1940s. The lid is a green leaf, and the bowl is the shape of an ear of corn. It measures about 10 inches long, 5 inches wide and 3 inches deep. I remember when we were children we always looked forward to dinner at grandma’s house and using the corn dishes. This dish is all that is left of the set, and I will always treasure it.
