The word “acceptance” gets a bad rap. Acceptance is not resignation. It’s not defeatist or complacent. Acceptance is powerful and progressive -- a symbol that marks that point in time when a person seizes control of their life. Acceptance is the antidote to denial.

Denial fuels paralysis. It destroys relationships, drains bank accounts, limits potential, inhibits progress, wreaks havoc on our health and leaves questionable politicians in power for far too long.

And it’s certainly no way to deal with a dog.

An acquaintance of mine is having trouble with his neighbors -- if you ask him. If you ask them, they’re having trouble with his dogs.

I asked him what the problem was, and he said, “My neighbors say my dogs bark when I’m not home, but I don’t think they do.”

Not “but I know they don’t because I recorded them while I was out.”

Not “but I know they don’t because I pretended to leave and then caught the neighbor redhanded provoking my dogs.”

Nope. For him it was enough to simply deny the possibility outright and assume his neighbors are lying. The irony is that he is an elementary-school teacher. No one is more familiar with the frustrations of denial than a teacher of young children.

“Thank you for coming in, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Your son hid a dead squirrel in my desk drawer today.”

“Oh, but our Bobby would never do that.

He loves all God’s creatures.”

Barking is a behavioral problem that frequently gets blown all out of proportion because of denial. Yes, barking is communication, it’s natural, it’s protection. But it’s also annoying and disruptive when excessive.

Barking isn’t the problem. Excessive barking is the problem. And if your dog is accused, the first step should be determining whether he is an excessive barker. If so, there are a multitude of options available to help manage or cure the problem behavior. But if we’re too busy denying it exists, they’ll be of little help.

A One-Sided Social Security Reform Proposal

Quite a few readers have asked me to comment on a bill sponsored by Representative Sam Johnson, R.-Texas, that he calls The Social Security Reform Act of 2016. I would call it the One-Sided Social Security Reform Act of 2016. And that’s because, like just about every Social Security reform proposal I have seen, it is lopsided. It proposes an array of benefit cuts and not a single suggestion to raise revenues.

Having said that, let me commend the congressman for at least taking the initiative to present a package of Social Security reforms. Still, a last day proposal is better than none at all. Too many of our country’s leaders treat the program like a sacred cow that should never be tampered with.

But tamper they must. Some of my old friends still with the Social Security Administration tell me that they are taking something like 10,000 retirement claims each day. In other words, tax-paying baby boomers are turning into benefit-receiving senior boomers at a record pace. That demographic time bomb has been ticking for quite a while now.

The longer we wait to deal with the issue, the harder it will be to implement changes.

You can think of our Social Security system as a pipeline. On one end of it are working people pumping their tax dollars into the pipe. On the other end, are senior citizens -- along with people with disabilities and widow(er)s and children of deceased workers -- drawing Social Security benefits out of the pipe.

For many years now, the system has worked very well at a three-to-one ratio. In other words, with three workers pumping taxes into the front end of the pipe for every one person on the back end collecting benefits.

But with 10,000 people every day moving from the input side of the pipe to the output side, we are gradually reaching the point where we will have only two workers pumping money into the system for each retiree sucking benefits out of the other end. And our Social Security system simply cannot be sustained at that two-to-one level -- as it is currently structured. That’s why reform is needed.

To deal with that pending shortfall, you essentially have two choices. You can pump more money into the front end of the pipe (by raising revenues) or you can cut back on the money flowing out of the other end (by reducing benefits). Most fair-minded people agree that a reasonable solution would involve a mix of both: some tax increases and some benefit cuts.

And as I alluded to at the beginning of this column, I don’t think Congressman Johnson’s proposals meet that “fair-minded” test. His bill includes 15 specific reforms, some of them way too technical to explain in a short column. But here is a brief rundown of the major points of his Social Security reform package.

He would gradually raise the retirement age from 67 to 69 for people born after 1967. While I think a gradual increase in the retirement age is inevitable, I think age 69 might be just a bit too steep.

I agree with many other reformists who think age 68 is a better target number.

Johnson also proposes to reduce benefit payments for the top 50 percent of wage earners.

I have an antique purple Carnival glass water set that was given to my greatgrandmother in the early 1900s. This mark is on each piece. The set consists of a large pitcher and matching tumblers. Each piece has a thumbprint base and is decorated with grapes, leaves and branches in relief. The pattern is “grape and cable.”

Good Painted Cottage Furniture Is Hard to Find

This is a photo of an antique dr y sink that has been in our family for years. It has the original yellow paint, which shows some wear, and is decorated with hand-painted flowers. The height is 32 inches. The width is 29 inches. And the depth is 18 inches. The top is hinged on the back, and it lifts up to open.

What can you tell me about the histor y, vintage and value of my dr y sink?

The mark was used by Northwood and Co. The firm was founded by Harry Northwood and Thomas Dugan in 1902. It was located in Wheeling, West Virginia, and became known as one of the premier glassware makers in the United States. Northwood and Co. made carnival glass from 1908 to 1915. By 1925, the once-innovative glass factory had hit hard financial times and was forced to close. The grape and cable pattern was produced in water sets, berry bowls, hatpin holders, spooners, dresser sets and pin trays.

As the playoff picture shapes up, New York Giants would like to remind you that the Dallas Cowboys haven’t won anything worth shouting about yet.

The Giants, however, have to know all too well that their plan on offense most closely resembles something you would find on a typical JV high school’s squad: have your good quarterback throw passes to your great wide receiver the ENTIRE game or die trying. There is no doubt that Eli Manning is one of the game’s all-time great quarterbacks, and Odell Beckham Jr., even if he never catches another pass, will still be rembered as having the best start of any wide receiver in NFL history. But how long can the Giants go with this game plan?

Actually, the better question to ask is how deep can the Giants go in the playoffs with that plan and zero running game. True, there is a certain charm to the Manning-Beckham plan.

For one thing, you don’t need to be a technical football wiz to understand what is going on there. They’re calling the same plays you did when you huddled up in your backyard as a kid: “You get open, and I will throw the ball to you, and then you just outrun everybody and score.

Got it? OK! Break!”

For the time being, this strategy has largely worked. That’s because Odell Beckham Jr. is just that good. He is a game breaker, he is young and healthy, he can catch, he’s a fierce competitor, and he’s got turbo jets. As long as the Giants’ truly superb defense is around, the G-men can get away with this plan.

As for Dallas, the team that beat everyone but the Giants, they still have one of the greatest offensive lines in modern times. They don’t just give rookie sensation Dak Prescott time to throw ... they give him enough time to drop back and meditate, write a little bit in his journal, eat a yogurt with fruit on the bottom (ya know, the kind you have to stir), call to check in on his mama and decide he needs to buy a house out in Hackensack before throwing a pass. But when he ends up on the short end of a throwback 10-7 game against the Giants, people jump to conclusions. Seven points? Is that all you get for your money?

The question there is whether Dallas fans and Romo-smitten owner Jerry Jones will have the patience to stick with the kid once they’re in the playoffs. After all, if you’re going to use Romo, the clock is ticking. At best, has about two seasons left before he succumbs to chronic, lifelong pain. But it would seem such a waste of time to try and develop Prescott only to bail on the guy come playoff time. If the franchise is eyeing another dynasty, it’d be foolish to jump off that Patriot-esque potential 10-year train.

Dallas should look at Romo as being the best backup quarterback since Johnny Unitas.

He can still chip in. We’ve seen him play long enough to know by now that if he can’t drive the Cowboys with a broken back, at least he can polish the fenders.
