• Because humans exhale CO2 through the nose and mouth, mosquitoes are especially attracted to our heads, accounting for those times they annoyingly buzz in our ears.

• A female mosquito can drink up to three times her weight in blood in a single day.

• Although a mosquito’s wings can beat up to 600 times per second, its flying speed is only about 1.5 mph, making them one of the slowest flying insects of all. Even gnats fly faster.

• We humans aren’t the only creatures annoyed by mosquitoes. Certain species don’t bite humans and feed exclusively on birds, while others prefer reptiles and amphibians.

• While you'll likely agree that sharks and snakes pose a deadly danger, you may be surprised to learn that the tiny mosquito is actually the most deadly creature in the animal world. In fact, the mosquito causes more deaths worldwide than any other creature through the deadly spread of diseases, such as malaria, yellow fever, and encephalitis. A single mosquito carrying malaria can infect more than 100 humans in its lifetime. More than 250 million people are infected with malaria every year, with a high death toll of about one million. Malariainfected mosquito bites kill children in Africa on an average of one every 45 seconds. 

Cocaine and marijuana aren’t the only things being smuggled into the States from Mexico. Monday evening, border patrol officials in San Diego County stopped Raul Jimenez Gonzalez at the Tecate Port of Entry and, while discussing a bottle of tequila, saw something move in his back seat.

The agents lifted a blanket and discovered 15 mixed-breed miniature poodles. All cute as the dickens. All sick as a dog. Most of the pups have parvovirus, which can be fatal -- and could have been prevented.

According to reports, Jimenez Gonzalez told officers he was taking the puppies to Los Angeles to be sold as Christmas presents. This isn’t the first time he’s played Santa Claus. He was accused of smuggling 27 Christmas puppies in 2006 and 11 in 2007. Ho, ho, ho, he's at it again.

Yes, Virginia, ‘tis the season for puppy smugglers, puppy mills and pet stores.

The enormous demand for Christmas puppies baffles me. For most households, the season is louder, busier and more stressful than any other time of year: people coming and going, travel plans to arrange and accommodate, parties to host and attend. Not to mention an abundance of poisonous plants and shiny glass objects that are largely absent from the house the rest of the year. And outside -- where you and your young pup will be spending a lot of time -- it’s chilly, gray, and raining or snowing. None of this is conducive to the warm, stable environment in which a new puppy thrives.

But when considered against the harsh realities of puppy trafficking and puppy mills, the demand for Christmas pups is more than perplexing.

It’s reckless.

The San Diego Department of Animal Services Director commented on the market for smuggled puppies during the holiday season, saying, “Unfortunately, most of these puppies are sick. So the buyer ends up spending a great deal of money trying to save the puppy’s life, usually without success.”

Getting Social Security Benefits Overseas

Ever since the presidential election, I’ve received a few emails from readers asking me what would happen to their Social Security benefits if they left the country. I’m not going to comment on their reasons for wanting to leave. (I get in trouble with readers when I reveal my political leanings.)

And so, as Sgt. Joe Friday used to say on the old “Dragnet” TV series, “Just the facts.”

If you are a U.S. citizen, the answer is pretty simple. Your Social Security check can be sent just about any place in the world. The only places where Social Security checks can’t be sent are North Korea, Cuba, and many of the former Soviet republics like Belarus, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, and all those “-stan” countries (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, etc.)

But in all my years of dealing with Social Security issues, I never met anyone who wanted to move to those places. So again, almost no matter where a U.S. citizen moves to, his or her Social Security check will follow.

The rules about getting Social Security benefits abroad get a lot messier for noncitizens. I’m not even going to begin to get into the nitty-gritty of those guidelines. But if you are interested, the Social Security Administration produces a booklet called, “Social Security -- Your Payments While You are Outside the United States.” You can find a copy of that pamphlet at the Social Security website. At the homepage, click on “Publications.” Then find the “Topics” tab and you’ll find this pamphlet under the section called “Special Interest.”

If you do move overseas, almost always you will arrange to have your benefits deposited into a bank, just as you would if you were living in the United States. It could be a bank in this country, or in many cases, a bank in the country to which you are moving. And those benefits are calculated in U.S. dollars. In other words, your benefit amount is not increased or decreased because of changes in international exchange rates.

There are a couple other issues you should consider if you are moving overseas. If you are under age 66 and plan to work in a foreign country, your earnings and the amount of time you work may reduce your Social Security checks. The rules are more complicated than those for Social Security beneficiaries working in the U.S. They are explained in the above-mentioned pamphlet.

Also, any Medicare coverage you have will be totally useless overseas. (Medicare only covers you while you are in the United States.) So if you are leaving the country for good, you might as well drop the Part B Medicare plan. You usually pay at least $120 a month or so for Part B. So if you can’t use it, why pay for it?

If you need to conduct any Social Security business while you are living overseas, you obviously won’t have any local Social Security office to visit. And you can’t call SSA’s telephone center. But you can visit your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. They always have someone on staff who handles Social Security matters.

Few Children Outgrow Tree-Nut Allergy

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you tell me if there is any hope of a cure for tree-nut allergy, particularly for a child? -- X.M.

ANSWER: Tree-nut allergies, like all allergies, vary in severity from mild to life-threatening. Allergies to tree nuts (these include walnuts, cashews, almonds and others) are common, are more likely to be severe, and tend to persist throughout lifetime. People with one tree-nut allergy may have others, and about 30 percent to 40 percent also may be allergic to peanuts (despite their being legumes, they share enough characteristics for co-allergic reactions). Peanut and tree-nut allergies appear to be increasing in prevalence over time.

The mainstay of treatment is avoiding the allergen, which requires constant vigilance, careful reading of nutritional labels and a plan for treatment in case of ingestion, such as an epinephrine auto-injector.

I certainly agree with you that each person is unique and that the label of a psychiatric condition, such as autism, bipolar or a personality disorder, has only limited usefulness. In the best case, it can give a person a way to start learning how to overcome challenges that similar people have faced. At worst, a label predisposes others to look at the person through a certain lens and to expect certain behaviors.

I have had many patients with psychiatric diagnoses ask me not to put that into their medical record, after having built up enough trust to share the diagnosis with me. People have had such negative experiences based on their diagnosis, their label, that I don’t blame them for wanting to avoid being stereotyped. There is so much variation in all of these conditions -- even in those of us considered neurologically typical -- that we need to recognize the good and the bad side of making such a diagnosis. * * * Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. VA Pushes Research on Prostate Cancer

The headline on the Department of Veterans Affairs news release cited a grim fact: 12,000 veterans are diagnosed annually with prostate cancer. The VA’s partnership with the Prostate Cancer Foundation can’t come too soon. Their goal: to prevent, screen and promote research to speed the development of treatments and cures among veterans.

To that end, they’re bringing together the big guns: researchers, data, cancer experts, advanced screenings and diagnostics. The PCF kicked in $50 million to get things started.

PCF will be partnering with many groups around the country to enroll more veterans in studies, provide data for studies, increase the number of VA facilities applying to them for funding and much more. Key in cancer treatment will be the development of precision medicine. The research and data also will be shared with public agencies and corporations.

This won’t be the VA’s first time partnering with others to search for cancer prevention and cure answers. In 2016 alone, it was part of 262 projects.

The new efforts include the Million Veteran Program, the world’s largest database of health, military and genetic data; VA Precision Oncology Program, providing state-of-the-art care; and VA Cooperative Studies Program, a colonoscopy screening, which wants to enroll 50,000 veterans.

Meanwhile, don’t wait for a call. Take charge of this. If you haven’t had a prostate-specific antigen test in a while, go get one. It’s a simple blood test that could save your life. Even if you have no symptoms at all, get the test. The result will tell you the likelihood that you’ll ever develop cancer. You might just be told to come back for another test so the results can be compared.

The earlier you get on this, the better. So, go.
