• Unlike other birds, Hummingbirds do not "flap" their wings, instead they rotate them in a figure-8 type shape. This unique design allows these masters of maneuverability to quickly dart in any direction, hover in one position, and even fly upside down. Interestingly, the Hummingbird is the only bird which can fly backwards. They can fly at speeds up to 30 mph, and when diving, can reach double that speed. • In order to collect nectar, hummingbirds do not suck the nectar through their long bills. Rather, they quickly lick it at the rate of 10 to 15 times per second with forked tongues.

• The bird’s heart beats around 1,260 times per minute, and even at rest, its breathing rate is 250 breaths per minute. In order to support this incredibly high metabolism, the bird needs to eat up to eight times per hour. Each feeding session lasts less than a minute. The hummingbird will visit about 1,000 flowers per day to gather the sugary sweet nectar needed for their energy.

But because the nectar is not a good source of other nutrients, the birds also dine on insects and spiders.

• Jim Henson was an artist, cartoonist, inventor, screenwriter, composer, musician, director, and producer as well. He signed on from the inception and spent the next 20 years with the series, until his sudden death at age 53 from streptococcal toxic shock syndrome.

• After just one season, the Educational Testing Service reported that children who regularly watched Sesame Street scored higher on tests than occasional viewers. Ten years after its premiere, 9 million American children under the age of six were watching the program every day, including 90% of children in lowincome, inner-city homes.

• “Sesame Street” was based on a combination

of streets in Harlem, the Bronx, and the upper West Side of New York City. Most of the action takes place around the address of 123 Sesame Street.

• Original Sesame Street puppets were Big Bird,

Kermit, Bert and Ernie, Oscar, Grover, and Cookie Monster. Others such as The Count, Elmo, Zoe, and Snuffleupagus came along in subsequent years.

• Initially, Sesame Street producers followed the recommendations of child psychologists and did not show humans interacting with puppets for concerns that it would confuse young children.

• After testing revealed that children paid attention to the program’s puppet segments, but lost interest during the "human" segments, Henson and his team created Muppets like Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch to interact with the human actors - and sustain children’s attention throughout the entire program.

Good Recipes from

Seafood Bake

In this recipe from our sister publication Woman’s Day, succulent fish and seafood become a decadent dinner when mixed into a creamy sauce topped with a crispy, shredded potato crust.

1 cup lowfat sour cream

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

2 teaspoons lemon zest

Kosher salt Pepper

1 1/2 pounds mixed seafood (such as salmon and shrimp)

1 package frozen leaf spinach

2 cups frozen shredded hash browns

1. Heat oven to 425 degrees F. In a large bowl, whisk together the sour cream, cornstarch, mustard, lemon zest, and 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper.

2. Add the seafood to the sour cream mixture and toss to coat. Squeeze the spinach of excess moisture, roughly chop, then fold into the seafood mixture. Divide among 4 shallow 1-cup baking dishes and place on a rimmed baking sheet.

3. Sprinkle the hash browns over the top and lightly brush with olive oil or coat with cooking spray. Bake until bubbling, 20 to 25 minutes. (For an extra golden-brown top, broil for 1 to 2 minutes.)

TIP: To use up the potatoes, make crispy potato fritters: In a medium bowl, combine 4 eggs (beaten), 2 cups frozen shredded hash browns (thawed), 3 scallions (thinly sliced) and 2 ounces ham (sliced into thin strips). Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet and cook spoonfuls of the mixture until golden brown, 3 minutes per side.

Serve with a green salad. Serves 5.

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

They’re heavenly with ice cream or sorbet.

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup light corn syrup

3 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces (do not use margarine)

1/2 cup pecans, finely chopped

6 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Heat oven to 375 F. Grease large cookie sheet.

2. In 2-quart saucepan, combine brown sugar, corn syrup and butter; heat to simmering over medium heat, stirring, until butter has melted and mixture is smooth. Remove saucepan from heat. With wooden spoon, stir in pecans, flour and vanilla.

3. Drop batter by level teaspoons, 3 inches apart, on prepared cookie sheet to make 6 to 8 cookies (depending on size of cookie sheet).

Bake until lightly browned, 5 to 7 minutes. Cool on cookie sheet on wire rack about 1 minute to set slightly; with wide spatula, quickly transfer cookies to wire racks to cool completely.

4. Repeat with remaining batter. Makes about 36 cookies.

 Each cookie: About 39 calories, 2g total fat (1g saturated), 0g protein, 4g carbohydrate, 3mg cholesterol, 13mg sodium.

Q&A On Commonly Asked Social Security Questions

I’ve just looked back on my columns for the past several weeks and noticed I went off on some esoteric subjects. I write those kinds of columns because I dread going over the same Social Security topics over and over again. But I know from readers’ emails that people don’t mind repetition.

In fact, they often write something similar to this comment: “I know you’ve covered this issue many times in the past, but now it finally applies to me and I’m paying attention this time!” So, today I’m going to give short and snappy answers to as many commonly asked questions as I can squeeze into my allotted space.

Q:

How come I’m not getting half of my husband’s Social Security?

A:

A wife gets half of her husband’s Social Security if she waits until age 66 to claim those benefits. If she takes benefits before age 66, they are reduced, down to about 30 percent at age 62.

Q:

Can I take reduced benefits on my husband’s Social Security at 62 and then switch to my full benefits at 66?

A:

No. If you file for any Social Security before age 66, you MUST file for your own reduced retirement benefits first. Then they will look to your husband’s account to see if you can get any additional reduced spousal benefits on his record.

Q:

My husband died when I was 58.

I’m now 62 and plan to retire. Can I take his Social Security now and save my own until later?

A:

Yes, you can. The difference between your situation and the one described in the previous question is that you are a widow. And widows can take reduced benefits on one record and then later switch to full benefits on another record. So, for example, you will get about 82 percent of your husband’s benefits now. Then at 66, you can switch to 100 percent of your own. Or you can wait until 70 and get 132 percent.

Q:

I am 82. My 86-year-old husband just died. I get $1,800 per month in my own Social Security. He was getting $2,100. I was told I will only get $300 in widow’s benefits.

Why can’t I get his full Social Security and my own? After all, we both worked and earned our benefits.

A:

The law has always said that a Social Security retirement benefit offsets any spousal benefits due. So you are technically due $2,100 in widow’s benefits, but that amount must be offset by your own $1,800 retirement check, leaving $300 in widow’s payments. Think of it this way. If you could get both your own AND your husband’s Social Security, then why can’t everyone else get

Cooled Thermotherapy Is Prostate Option

DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s your opinion on cooled thermotherapy for benign enlargement of the prostate? I recently was put on Flomax and finasteride, and was given the option of having this procedure to eliminate taking these two drugs.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I just read your column regarding the shingles vaccine. I am an insurance agent who is often asked about coverage for the shingles vaccine. The Affordable Care Act does include this under preventive care for individuals 60 and over. Preventive care is covered at 100 percent for health plans that are not grandfathered. (Grandfathered health plans are plans that have been continued virtually unchanged since 2010. They are not required to comply with all aspects of ACA, so these plans might not provide this service.)

You also may be interested in knowing that, in our area, the Department of Health clinic does offer the shingles vaccine for a fee of $5 for individuals over the age of 50 who do not have it covered under a health plan. I am not aware if this is unique to our area, or if it is a widespread provision.

The most effective treatment remains surgery, called transurethral resection of the prostate, TURP, which reduces symptoms by at least half in 98 percent of men. Unfortunately, TURP causes side effects in at least 20 percent of men, so there are several procedures designed to try to get the benefit of surgery without the drawbacks.

Cooled thermotherapy is a procedure using a microwave device to reduce prostate tissue. It isn’t as effective as TURP: Only 72 percent of men reduce their symptoms by half or more; however, it has reduced side effects, such as need for blood transfusion. Unfortunately, there were more symptoms of uncomfortable urination, urgency and need for a catheter after surgery.

I think both of your doctors are right: Some men have good experiences, but not everyone will get relief. Some serious side effects are better with thermotherapy, and others are worse. You need to decide how much taking the medications bothers you and if you can live with the symptoms the way they are.

I read your column in our local newspaper and thought perhaps you could help me research a set of porcelain dishes I inherited from my mother many years ago.

The set goes back several generations in my family, but I have had difficulty learning about its histor y. It is a ser vice for 12 people that includes ser ving dishes. The dishes are white and heavily embellished with gold bands that are embossed with roses. Some of the dishes are marked “Selb, Bavaria”; others are marked “Bavaria, Germany”; and some include the word “Favorite.” All of them are marked with an image of a lion with the letters “LHS” underneath.

This mark is on an earthenware pedestal cake stand I’ve had for years. It was my mother’s, and no one knows anything about it. Our birthday cakes were always ser ved on it, so it has sentimental value. It stands about 6 inches tall and is 8 inches in diameter. It is decorated with multicolored flowers against a cream-colored background.

The stand is in mint condition.

Anything you can tell me about its maker, vintage and value will be appreciated.

Hutschenreuther Porcelain Factory made your dinnerware. Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther founded his company in Hohenburg, Germany, in 1814. In 1857, his son, Lorenz, established a factory in Selb, which is located in Bavaria, Germany. Porcelain that was marked “Favorite” was exported from Germany to the United States by the Chicago-based firm Burley and Co. Identifying Hutschenreuther china patterns can be challenging. The factory produced a plethora of white porcelain decorated with gold-encrusted bands, embossed flowers and designs. The factory continues to produce high-quality porcelain today.

Your dinnerware set was made around 1920. The insurance value would probably be $1,500 to $2,000.

You’re Doing It All Wrong

Baseball is a maddening game; ask any Mets or Orioles fan, and they’ll surely agree. The new “sudden death” one-game wild card isn’t a playoff -- it’s a play-in game. The fans hang with their team for 162 games and at the end of it all, turns out they only got to play one more game than the last-place team.

But baseball has always been a bit weird.

It’s the only sport I can think of that doesn’t have the same playing field dimensions. It’s the only sport that I can think of where the defense controls the ball, and the offense’s job is to protect the plate (yes, maybe cricket is another example). And it is easily the most stubborn when it comes to the “unwritten” rules.

For instance, it’s the bottom of the ninth and you’re down a run. Your leadoff hitter gets a base on balls. What happens next? If you’re like most managers, you would attempt to bunt him over into scoring position, right?

Well, Brian Kenney, anchorman for the MLB Network, is here to tell you that you’re wrong.

Kenney is one of those guys, you know, the fancy-schmancy-SABRmetric-money-ball-BillJames-disciple type that never played the game but is a big know-it-all because he uses outlandish things like irrefutable statistics to back up his arguments. In Kenney’s new book, “Ahead of the Curve” (Simon & Shuster), he points out that the run expectancy with a man on first is 0.94. With a man on second, one out the number craters to 0.72. You’re giving the other team a free out, and you’re taking the bat out of two players’ hands ... the guy bunting and the guy who is on-deck after the other two fail to drive in that run. Yet the manager is lauded whether it works or not because it puts the blame on the two hitters who “failed in the clutch” because “he played the percentages,” which is true, except that he played the wrong ones.

Kenney also goes on to disparage the wonlost statistic for pitchers and the error for infielders.

The W-L has definitely been devalued over the years. Pitchers don’t pitch complete games anymore, so it’s a nonsense statistic. ERA and WHIP (walks and hits divided by innings pitched) are far better measures. He also points put that fielding percentage is a nonsense statistic because it doesn’t take into account a fielder’s range or his arm.

His most outlandish theory is “bullpenning.”

He cites statistics that prove most runs are scored in the first inning and/or about the time a starting pitcher starts to fatigue. Why not have a few designated starters who pitch two innings, a few long-reliever/starter types and a bunch of firemen ... pitchers like Sparky Lyle, Goose Gossage and Rollie Fingers, guys you bring in whenever you’re in a jam. Why save the best (today’s closer) for last when the team could have used him best in, say, the fifth-inning when the other team had the bases jammed.

I actually put that theory to the test using the “MLB Manager” app -- which I highly recommend -- and son-of-gun if it didn’t take the 1985 Cubs to the World Series with no ERA over 2.99.

Will a change come? Sadly, not in our lifetime, but think of the children ... don’t they deserve to see their team win a Series one day?
