You Can Save Social Security!

There is no question that as the tens of millions of working and tax-paying baby boomers retire and turn into senior boomers collecting Social Security benefits, some adjustments will be needed to keep the program viable for future generations.

As I pointed out in last week’s column, the system doesn’t need a massive overhaul. Just a few relatively modest tweaks to the tax and/or benefit structure will work. But even minor changes to the status quo cause consternation among both politicians and voters. Americans seem to be looking for easy answers in which no one’s benefits are cut and no one’s taxes are raised -- especially not their own!

So here’s a chance for you come up with solutions to Social Security’s funding problems. Let’s see if you can save Social Security.

Listed below are 10 commonly mentioned proposals for reforming Social Security. Four involve cutting benefits and four deal with raising revenues. Two more concern so-called privatization plans for the system. Next to each is a number expressed as a percentage. The number indicates the portion of Social Security’s long-range deficit that would be eliminated if the proposal became law. So if you can find solutions totaling 100 percent or more, you’ve saved Social Security! Also listed is a brief argument for and against each proposal.

Proposals that would reduce benefits:

Raise the retirement age to 70 by 2060 -- a 68 percent fix.

 Why this is a good idea?

--People are living longer, healthier lives and, with enough lead time, they would be able to plan for the delay in receipt of their benefits.

 Why this is a bad idea?

--Would you really want to work until you are 70 years old? Employers will be faced with higher health care costs for older workers.

Reduce cost of living adjustments paid to Social Security beneficiaries by 1/2 of 1 percent -- a 25 percent fix.

 Why is this a good idea?

--Economists believe the current formula overstates inflation for seniors.

 Why is this a bad idea?

--I’ve never met one senior citizen who believes the economists. Also, COLA reductions are cumulative. The longer you live, the more you will suffer financially.

Reduce benefits by 5 percent for all future retirees -- a 35 percent fix.

 Why is this a good idea?

--All retirees should share responsibility for shoring up Social Security.

 Why is this a bad idea?

--Lower-income beneficiaries could not afford the reduction.

Means Test: Reduce benefits to those making more than $100,000 -- a 50 percent fix.

 Why is this a good idea?

--It ensures Social Security paid only to people who need it the most.

 Why is this a bad idea?

--It would turn Social Security into a welfare program.

All working Americans should pay for Social Security.

 Why is this a bad idea?

It would jeopardize many well-run government employee pension plans.

Proposals that involve some form of “privatizing” Social Security:

Invest 40 percent of Social Security trust funds in private markets -- a 48 percent fix.

 Why is this a good idea?

--It would yield higher rate of return than current Treasury note investments.

 Why is this a bad idea?

--Protracted market downturns could have dire consequences on a national retirement system. And do we want the feds to own a major share of private corporations like Apple or Phillip Morris?

Create personal accounts by diverting 2 percent of payroll tax to individuals -- a 0 percent fix.

 Why is this a good idea?

--It gives individuals potentially greater returns and more of a say in their financial futures.

 Why is this a bad idea?

Embalming and body preparation: Embalming is usually mandatory for open-casket viewing, otherwise it’s not required unless the body is going to be transported across state lines. Embalming costs $695. Other body preparations, which includes hairdressing and cosmetics runs $250.

Funeral viewing and ceremony: If the viewing and funeral ceremony is at the funeral home, you’ll be charged for use of the chapel and any necessary staff. Costs: $420 for view-

In addition to these costs, there are a number of other related expenses such as flowers for the funeral (around $200 to $400), the newspaper obituary fee ($100 to $600 or more), the clergy honorarium ($200 to $300) and extra copies of the death certificate ($5 to $35 per copy depending on the state).

And, a number of large cemetery costs such as the plot or mausoleum fee, the vault or grave liner that’s required by most cemeteries, and the opening and closing of the grave, all of which average between $2,000 and $4,000; and the gravestone, which typically costs between $1,000 and $3,000.

All told, the average cost of a total funeral today is around $11,000 or more.

If your aunt’s estate can’t afford this, there are ways to save. For starters, you should know that prices can vary significantly by funeral provider, so it’s very wise to shop around.

But, the most economical way by far to save significantly on a funeral is to request a “direct burial” or “direct cremation.” With these options your aunt would be buried or cremated shortly after death. This avoids the embalming and viewing. If she wants a memorial service you can have it at the graveside or at her place of worship without the remains present. These services usually run between $600 and $2,000, not counting cemetery charges if the remains are to be buried or placed in a vault.

But looking closer I found a hole that was drilled in the bottom of the reser voir to electrify it. Other than that, the lamp is in excellent condition, and I plan on keeping it. My “Sandwich Glass Whale Oil” reference book lists this lamp at $150. What is it really worth?

Long Live the King

The 1960s era loved majesty. The Kennedy White House was dubbed “Camelot” by the press, Johnny Carson had started his 30-year reign on late-night television, and golf had its very own “king,” Arnold Palmer.

Palmer came from humble beginnings.

Born in the steel town of Youngstown, Ohio, his family migrated to Latrobe, Pennsylvania. It was there, at the Latrobe Country Club, that he began his apprenticeship under the watchful guidance of his father, the club’s groundskeeper turned club pro. He did not immediately seize the crown, opting instead for a college golf scholarship at Wake Forest.

And he didn’t have to seize the crown, the advent of sports television programming coronated him right from the start. He was a lock for the role. Palmer was handsome, well-dressed, athletic, humble yet friendly, instantly personable and giving of his time and attention with just about anyone he held court with. And he was golf’s first true modern-day type of superstar. He was the first golfer to sign with an international agent, the game’s first millionaire, the game’s most familiar face. In 1962, the year he won his third of four Masters, he graced more front-page magazine covers than Jim Beatty and Wilt Chamberlain, the guys who broke the four-minute mile and scored 100 points in a basketball game, respectively.

James Bond even name checks him in “Goldfinger.”

Palmer’s reign was undisputed between the years of 1960-63, when he won 29 tournaments. Though guys like Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player soon would take over the trophy cases, they never took away his mantle as the game’s most popular player, which lasted well into the next century.

He was a king who had many clubs. He was a Freemason. He owned 10,000 golf clubs, but was known best for the Dyna-powered Fluid Field Wilson one-iron that he famously wielded, a club that most people leave out of their bags and their lives, for that matter. He bought his father’s club in Latrobe and designed 200 other golf courses of his own.

He was a king who had his own army.

Throngs of fans, “Arnie’s Army,” traipsed after their hero, hole after hole. He was a man of the people.

It has been said that he lost more than a few championships on the last hole by losing concentration after saying hello to an old friend in the gallery. And he was a benevolent king, signing his full name on autographs, lending his name to charities and benefits the world over. He even has a tasty beverage named after him. No other golfer, no other athlete (unless you count Shirley Temple’s tap dancing as a sport), has that honor. You go into a restaurant and try to order a Sam Snead or Ben Hogan, and see what you get in return.

Louis L’amour once said, “Because a man plays a king superbly well does not mean that he would make a good king.” Well, Arnold Palmer wasn’t a good king -- he was a great king, and it’s very sad to see him go. Long live the king.
