• The Model T was the first car that the average citizen could afford to own. It was low-priced, mostly reliable, and easy to repair. It could also be hitched  wood, up as a power source to pump water, saw chop silage, or even generate electricity. With a change of wheels, it could double as a tractor. It operated as a pickup truck, hay wagon, taxi, or fire engine.

* It was ancient Stoic philosopher Epictetus -- who served as a slave to a freedman named Epaphroditos, who was himself a secretary to the infamous Roman emperor Nero -- who made the following observation: “Men are not disturbed by things, but the view they take of things.” (In an interesting side note, upon hearing that quotation, a professor of psychology named Herb Kimmel reportedly responded: “What about things like bullets?”) * The next time you’re outside enjoying a morning serenade, consider this tidbit: Most bird songs are cries of war, not courtship. * Most people know “Mary Poppins” from the 1964 Disney film, but the character was created by author P.L. Travers and first appeared in a children’s book published in 1934. Walt Disney loved the story and wanted to make it into a movie, but it took more than 20 years for him to convince Travers to approve the plan. * Beloved American author Kurt Vonnegut studied biochemistry in college. * You may think you know what color a polar bear’s fur is, but you’re probably wrong: It’s not white; it’s translucent. The fur appears white because it reflects visible light -- in fact, polar bears are nearly invisible in infrared photography. If you’ve seen a polar bear in a zoo, though, you may have noticed a greenish tinge to its fur; this color comes from algae, which tends to form when the bears are in warm and humid environments to which they’re not accustomed. * You might be surprised to learn that the first drive-in theater in the United States was opened all the way back in 1921, in downtown Comanche, Texas. Other Uses for Ordinary Dryer Sheets

Perhaps you’ve seen a list of uses for dryer sheets floating around the internet. Who knows where that list came from. What we do ® know is that not all of the alternative uses can be verified as true. For example, we have no conby Mary Hunt fidence that Bounce or any other brand of dryer sheet will repel mosquitoes. But can they repel spiders and flies and other things? Read on.

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

PESTS. Readers have confirmed that dryer sheets will repel both spiders and flies.

Keep a few extra sheets in clothes hampers and around the laundry area, and you can kiss all those spiders goodbye.

BURNT PAN. Fill that icky casserole pan with warm water and lay a dryer sheet flat on top to soak overnight. In the morning, the caked-on gunk will have floated off or will be loose enough to scrape off easily with a spatula.

TISSUE ROLL. Roll up a dryer sheet and stuff it inside the paper roll. Each time you spin it releases a little freshness into your bathroom.

BLINDS. Wipe down your blinds with a dryer sheet to prevent static electricity and keep dust from collecting.

LUGGAGE. Slip a dryer sheet into your suitcases while they are in storage, and they won’t smell musty when you take them out to use.

RODENTS. Place dryer sheets in drawers and near entrances and exits in your camper when it is not being used. They will keep rodents from coming inside.

VACUUM. Place a used dryer sheet in the bag of your vacuum. Sweep your house, and once you’re done the air will smell as fresh as your clothes.

SCISSORS. If your scissors or kitchen shears are not cutting as smoothly as you would like, it’s no problem. Cut through several layers of a dryer sheet a few times and they’ll cut easily again.

ROAD TAR. Get the car wet, then use a

dryer sheet to wipe away all the bugs and road tar. It’s easier and faster than most expensive bug and tar removers.

SHOES. Pop a sheet into each of your less-than-fresh-smelling sneakers, sandals or boots, then place them in a plastic bag. Tie it closed. In the morning your shoes will smell so much better.

FAUCETS. Used dryer sheets make great cloths for quick shine-ups in the bathroom and kitchen. Just use one on each of your chrome faucets, and enjoy the sparkle.

GYM BAG. A sheet at the bottom of a gym bag will mask the odor until you can throw your gym clothes in the laundry.

SOLEPLATE. Remove gunk from the bottom of an iron. With the setting on low, rub the iron over the dryer sheet until the residue disappears, and you’re left with a pristine soleplate.

STATIC CLING. Stop static cling on clothes, or tame your flyaway hairs, by rubbing a sheet over the problem area.

• Born in Vermont in 1804, a 17-year-old youth named John was apprenticed to a local blacksmith. After spending a year learning the trade, he decided to set up his own shop. But competition from other blacksmiths kept his income so low he was unable to pay his bills.

He learned of a town in Illinois that had no blacksmiths, so he packed up his equipment and moved there. Work began to pour in and John’s reputation as a blacksmith spread quickly.

• Many of his customers were farmers bringing in their plows for repairs. He soon realized that the cast iron plows that easily turned the light soil of the eastern states were inefficient in the heavy clay sod of Illinois and they were always causing farmers problems. John wondered if a plow made of steel would be better than one made of iron, so he began to experiment. The problem with iron was that dirt would cling to it, making it necessary to stop frequently to scrape it off by hand. A polished steel plow, he discovered, easily threw off dirt and was even self-scouring, never needing cleaning at all.

• He immediately went to work forging sheets of steel into plow blades, and sold his first one in 1838. By 1841 John was selling a hundred plows a year. Soon they were selling so quickly that John dropped his blacksmithing services altogether and went into manufacturing plows full-time. With his workload steadily increasing he was constantly hiring more help to keep up with demand. By 1856 he was selling more than 10,000 plows per year.

• His son Charles joined the company and the firm expanded by inventing and producing seed drills, cultivators, harrows, and wagons. They invented the first plow with wheels that allowed

the farmer to ride on a seat instead of walking in the furows behind the horse.

• After John died in 1886, the company expanded into gasoline powered tractors and other farm machinery. Today the company employs over 50,000 people and produces over 600 kinds of agricultural and construction equipment including backhoes, tractors, loaders, and much more. Named after John, the company now has a net worth of over $40 billion.

• In 1871 he patented a portable grain cleaner, and followed that with a machine that harvested, threshed, and cleaned all at the same time.

Because the machine combined the functions, it was called the “combine.”

• Then Daniel became interested in the newly invented traction engine, whose name was shortened to “tractor.” Combines were still being pulled by horses, but Daniel knew it would be far more efficient if combines were towed by tractors. The problem was that the size of the tractors needed to pull it were too large for farmers to use in small fields. What was needed was a small but still powerful tractor. He put his inventive skills to work and designed a model that was smaller, more manageable, and turned a much tighter circle.

He improved the wheel design by adding treads similar to the type tanks use to grab the ground for better traction. Senior Meal Programs

A good place to start is to find out if there’s a senior home delivery meal program in your dad’s area. Meals on Wheels is the largest program that most people are familiar with, but many communities offer senior meal delivery programs sponsored by other organizations that go by different names.

To find services available in your dad’s area, visit MealsOnWheelsAmerica.org, which offers a comprehensive directory on their website, or call the area aging agency near your dad.

These companies offer a wide variety of tasty meal choices, and will usually post the nutrition information for their meals right on their website. Most companies will also cater to a host of dietary and medical needs, such as low-sodium and low-carb meals, diabetic meals, gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegetarian options.

Most of the food arrives frozen, but a few companies ship food fresh. Prices generally start at around $10 to $13 per meal, plus shipping, however most companies provide discounts or free shipping when you order meals in bulk.

Grocery Stores and Restaurants

Depending on where your dad lives, he may also be able to get home delivered meals from local grocery stores or restaurants. Some grocery stores offer a selection of pre-cooked meals and foods, including roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and fresh soups and salads.

Or, they can prepare it in their own kitchen and deliver it.

Chef’s fees range between $200 and $300 plus groceries. He may be able to save money by sharing meals with you or another family member, or a friend or neighbor.

Classical Scenes Characterize Jasperware

Q: I inherited this bowl from a relative. He said it was not made by Wedgwood. It has the look and feel of a Wedgewood, though the decoration appears to be thicker than that of Wedgewood pieces I have seen. It is in relief, it is ornate, and it has faces that hide the feet. An antiques dealer told me it was made by a German factor y in competition with Wedgwood, although the lead did not pan out. On the bottom of the bowl is the number “15 -- 3003.”

The bowl is 6 inches wide and about 3 inches tall.

Do you have any thoughts or guesses on the histor y of this bowl?

Q: This is a mark on a set of porcelain dishes that I am thinking of buying. I saw the set at an antiques mall and would like to know more about the vintage and value before I decide whether to purchase. Each dish is decorated with pink flowers and gold trim.

The person at the front desk said the pattern is Azalea. The set is a ser vice for eight; it includes two ser ving platters, a vegetable bowl, a cream pitcher and a sugar bowl. The asking price is $325.

What can you tell me about this set?

Azalea pattern was made by Noritake China Co.

A: Noritake China Co. located in Japan made the Azalea pattern from the early 1900s till around 1941. The pattern was produced exclusively for the Larkin Company in New York. The letter “M” in the mark represents New York importers The Morimura Brothers. The number “19322” is the pattern number. The dishes were premiums that were given to Larkin customers.

A service for eight in the Azalea pattern would probably be priced between $275 and $325. The price given at the antiques mall is a fair market value.

A: You have a jasperware bowl. Jasperware was developed by Josiah Wedgwood in England in the 1700s. It is matte, unglazed stoneware or porcelain decorated with applied white ceramic decorations like classical scenes from Greek mythology. The backgrounds were available in matte blue, lilac, black, yellow and green. Jasperwares included plaques, vases, cameos and decorative items. Although your bowl is decorated with cupids, it doesn’t have the appearance of Wedgwood jasperware.

The decoration seems heavy and lacking the exceptional Wedgwood work.

I was eating a grilled octopus at Dimitri’s in Philadelphia when I learned that the Eagles had traded Sam Bradford to the Vikings in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

All I could do was take a deep breath, because I knew I had to pace myself. The news made a walk across the street to the New Wave, a legendary Philadelphia sports bar, mandatory.

I cannot honestly say whether or not Philadelphia has the best sports fans, but I can tell you that they come off like the perfect sports-fan stereotype you often see caricatured in sitcoms and film.

In Philadelphia, the mere notion of a casual sports fan is abhorrent. You don’t have to paint your face, but you must own at least one article of officially licensed clothing and you must get to the stadia off of I-95 at minimum once per year or you risk expulsion.

To recap, tonight we learned that Sam Bradford, a former top pick in the draft, was traded to Minnesota, elevating the Eagle’s first-round pick from this year, Carson Wentz, to the helm. Wentz, billed as a “smart” mobile quarterback with a cannon arm, put up very impressive numbers at North Dakota State. The Eagles worked very hard to explain this rationale to their fans, and for the most part the strategy seemed to work as most Eagle fans condoned the pick.

Well, at least they didn’t boo.

Bradford was never really beloved in Philadelphia. Fans appreciated his talent but really disdained his fragility (yeah, and that’s how they talk at the New Wave ... “You know something? I really disdain Bradford’s fragility ... wanna shoot some darts?”). The guy always got hurt. So what do the Eagles do? They elevate a guy that got his ribs cracked open after completing 12 passes and missing three pre-season games to the starting position.

He will be playing for rookie head coach Doug Pederson, a guy who brings great bonafides as a former Eagles QB and from his years of coaching the Kansas City Chiefs under former Eagle’s head coach Andy Reid. For good measure, Pederson also brought along former Mizzou QB standout Chase Daniels to back Wentz up.

If Pederson thought Missouri was the “Show Me” state, he has to know that Philadelphia brings that mentality to a completely new level.

Vegas has them at 100-to-1 odds to win the Super Bowl, but they are loaded with talent, having signed Darren Sproles at running back and Rodney McLeod for their secondary. They have a great set of tight ends in Brent Celek and Zach Ertz. Still, even with Bradford, this season was considered to be a rebuilding year. What do they have now?
