• The whale was named Namu after a nearby British Columbian community. It took 18 days to make the slow 400-mile trip down to Seattle, with Namu in tow carefully enclosed in a threesided pen.

• While at SeaWorld, Shamu was trained to perform and became their show's main attraction for nearly six years. But during a routine performance in 1971, she latched on to the hip and legs of a female employee who was riding her and refused to let go. The orca’s jaws had to be pried apart with a pole by other employees, and she was immediately retired from future performances. Shamu died four months later of septicemia.

• After Shamu’s death, SeaWorld continued to use the name for the subsequent killer whales used in their shows.

• During the late 1960s and in 1970, approximately 35 orcas were captured in Puget Sound, with 13 of them killed during the process. The last whale to be captured was Lolita, caught near Washington’s Whidbey Island in 1970.

Her home for the last 46 years has been the Miami Seaquarium, although plans are in the works to return her to her native habitat.

• Shamu the Whale Day on September 26 commemorates that day in 1985, when the first surviving orca was born in captivity.

• Orca or Killer whales belong to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. They are found in all oceans, from Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas.

They are not considered a threat to humans in the wild, but experience has shown they can be dangerous to handlers in captivity.

• Orcas are highly social, with some populations composed of family groups called pods, which are the most stable of any animal species.

Their diet varies from fish to sea lions, sharks, rays, octopi, and squid, with some feeding on penguins and even sea turtles.

Good Recipes from

Tomato and Shrimp Salad

A light supper favorite, drizzled with lemonDijon dressing and sprinkled with chunks of feta -serve with a piece of Tomato Focaccia bread. The ideal end-of-summer meal, especially when served alfresco.

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

1. Shell and devein shrimp, leaving tails on if you like. Rinse with running cold water. In 4-quart saucepan, heat 2 inches water to boiling over high heat. Add shrimp and 2 teaspoons salt; cook 1 minute or until shrimp turn opaque throughout. Drain shrimp; rinse with running cold water to cool and drain again. Place shrimp in large serving bowl.

2. In 10-inch skillet, heat 3/4-inch water to boiling over high heat. Add beans and 2 teaspoons salt; heat to boiling. Reduce heat to medium; cook, uncovered, about 5 minutes or until beans are tender-crisp. Drain beans; rinse under running cold water to cool and drain again. Place beans, tomatoes and cucumbers in bowl with shrimp.

3. Prepare dressing: From lemon, grate 1/2 teaspoon peel and squeeze 3 tablespoons juice. In small bowl, with wire whisk or fork, combine lemon peel, lemon juice, olive oil, shallot, oregano, mustard, sugar, pepper and 3/4 teaspoon salt. Toss dressing with shrimp and vegetables in bowl. Sprinkle with feta cheese. Makes 4 main-dish servings.

1 pound Kirby cucumbers (about 4), peeled and each cut lengthwise into quarters then cut crosswise into 1-inch pieces

Defective Dog Trainers

About a year ago, a woman in New York City who shall remain nameless adopted two Chihuahuas knowing both dogs had a proclivity toward aggression. The dogs did not disappoint: They bark when she is and isn’t home, they snap at fellow residents in the elevator, and they’ve bitten random strangers on the street.

Just within the last year, this woman has hired four different dog trainers, each drawing their own professional conclusions:

-- Love the dogs, tell them they are good boys, and keep them in their crates.

-- Ignore the bad behavior, and the dogs will eventually knock it off.

-- The dogs are mad at you, and that is why they bite.

-- Some dogs are just defective.

Apparently, so are some dog trainers.

Which is why it’s important to do the homework and know what you want before you sign on with a trainer for you and your dog.

Yes: a trainer for you and your dog.

A highly specialized trainer trains a Seeing Eye dog and teaches the owner how to effectively communicate with the dog in terms of the dog’s education. Another specialized trainer trains a K-9 cop and educates the officer to ensure dog and dog owner speak the same language. That is essentially what you want from your dog trainer: someone who can teach you and your dog to speak the same language.

And that language is not the language of love.

I recently spoke with a woman whose dog urinates in the house. She told me how much she loves her dog and that she was sure they could work it out. But the problem persisted despite her immense love, and she eventually called a dog trainer. This “trainer” concluded that her dog was angry with her because she had a roommate. The woman asked, “What do I do?” The trainer advised, “Get rid of the roommate.”

My advice? Get rid of that dog trainer! and lose the notion that lots of love is the equivalent of lots of training.

Dog training is an unregulated industry.

And as those boomers get older, their bodies are breaking down --as evidenced by new claims for disability benefits. There were 592,000 such claims in 1975 and 741,000 disability claims last year. Although surprisingly, that is down from a peak of just over 1 million disability claims in 2011.

Around 10 years ago, I bought an Arts and Crafts potter y vase at an antiques shop. I have drawn the mark that is on the bottom. It is decorated with a dark-green matte glaze that is mottled with a darker green color. The height is approximately 6 inches. On either side of the top of the vase are geometric-shaped handles. If I remember correctly the antiques dealer said the vase was decorated with a cr ystalline glaze.

I don’t remember how much I paid at the time and would like to know its current value, along with any other pertinent information.

Carnival Glass Bowl Q:

This is a photo of a Carnival glass berr y bowl that I recently purchased. It is marigold in color. There is a fire pattern in it. It measures 9 inches in diameter and 3 inches deep. The bowl is decorated with hob stars, arches and flowers, and it has a sawtooth edge. There are no chips or cracks; it is in perfect condition. I believe my bowl is close to 100 years old. I paid less than $10 and think I got a really good deal.

What can you can tell me about it maker, vintage and value?

A:

Your carnival glass berry bowl was made between the early 1900s and 1920. It may have been part of a set that included the master bowl and matching berry serving bowls. It was inspired by the expensive, iridescent blown glass made by Tiffany and Co. Metallic salts added to the firing process gave Carnival glass its shiny, iridescent appearance. It was affordable for the Carnival glass was made in average consumer the early 1900s. and available in marigold, amethyst, red, amber and blue-green colors.

Imperial Glass Co., Northwood Glass Co. and Fenton Art Glass Co. were a few of the manufacturers of Carnival glass. Some of the patterns are similar to cut-glass designs that were popular at the time.

Without a mark on the glass or a label it can be difficult to identify the maker.

You did get a really good deal, but values for Carnival glass have diminished since 2008.

Your circa-1920 berry bowl today would probably be worth $25 to $50.

You have a wonderful example of an Arts and Crafts pottery vase made by Fulper Pottery Co. Fulper was founded in Flemington, New Jersey, in 1899 by William Hill Fulper II. From 1804 to 1930 it produced the Vasekraft line, an arts and crafts line.

K.J. Carson is a friend of mine. We used to sit in the back of our high-school classes and constantly crack up on the way to our C averages. We had this one teacher who was about 110 years old who used to like to start his lectures with a line from the famous person he would be teaching us about that day. For instance, if he was teaching us about John Kennedy, he might start with “Ask not what your country can do for you ...”

The day K.J. and I really became friends was the day that teacher walked in and declared “I am the virgin queen!” I’m not sure if we ever really stopped laughing from that day since. Yeah, we didn’t learn much from that class -- and if I am ever asked who the virgin queen was, I will quickly answer “Mr. Reed” -- but we did keep a running commentary over the years.

They think they know him because he plays football on TV ... I wish some people would just admit they have a problem with Colin Kapaernick making $19 million a year. It’s not about a flag, or disrespecting soldiers. That’s trying to “dictate” what you believe he is doing instead of “listening” to what he is saying ... unless you don’t want to hear that ... because that’s your right too!”

I can only add that it’s fitting to remember what police officers go through every day, too. As a former police-beat reporter and member of a family that has had more than a few cops in our ranks, it is important to remember that these officers are the ones kicking in the door to find your dead grandma in the morning, handling multiple murders before lunch, fighting rape, finding stolen tools (which, believe me, causes murders in a small town filled with day laborers and drunk and disorderly nights).

There is no way to fleck off the instances of police brutality, but you can put me squarely on the side of sane reform. These people signed up to be heroes, and now it’s time to help them out.

Whether or not Colin can be helped from here on out is up to him. He went from a standout to someone now remembered for refusing to stand. * * *
