• In 1894, Will Keith Kellogg, brother of Doctor John Harvey Kellogg, had been trying to find ways to improve the diet of hospital patients. He was searching for a digestible bread substitute by using a process of boiled wheat.

• After leaving a pot of his boiled wheat mixture to cool one day, he accidentally forgot about it and it soon began to solidify into a dough-like consistency. Out of curiosity, he then decided to flatten the mixture with a roller and let it dry thoroughly. To his surprise, each grain of wheat emerged as a large thin flake. He tasted it, liked the flavor -- and Kellogg’s cereal was born.

Air travel is not what it used to be. Having flown 1.5 million miles in the past 20 years, I’ve seen things go from enjoyable to downright chal® lenging. I’ve had to learn a few lessons the hard way, but learn them I have. Because of the things

My purpose is to arrive at my destination safe, healthy and happy. That’s why I always travel with an assistant -- a travel buddy. My buddy NokOut weighs just 4 ounces and travels in my handbag. Buddy is with me wherever I go.

I have come to assume that my space on any airplane is a germ pit, due to what I have observed over the years. I have seen people change dirty diapers on the pull-down tray table. Summer Mexican Pasta Salad

Brown-bagging it? Pack this in your lunchbox, and you’ll almost think you traveled to Mexico on your lunch break.

2 cups cooked rotini pasta, rinsed and drained

1 cup unpeeled and diced fresh tomatoes

1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper

1/2 cup chopped red pepper

3/4 cup (3 ounces) shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese

1/2 cup fat-free Catalina Dressing

2 tablespoons fat-free mayonnaise

1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes

1 teaspoon chili seasoning

1. In a large bowl, combine rotini pasta, tomato, green pepper, onion and Cheddar cheese.

In a small bowl, combine Catalina dressing, mayonnaise, parsley flakes and chili seasoning. Add dressing mixture to pasta mixture.

2. Toss gently to combine. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Gently stir again just before serving. Makes 4 (1 cup) servings.

Sam, and Frank Dorsa introduced their product to grocery stores in 1953, calling them Froffles, but when customers started calling them “eggos” because of their “eggy” taste, the name was changed in 1955. Eggo waffles are now a division of Kellogg’s, and their advertising slogan “L’eggo my Eggo!” is a familiar one. 

World’s Fair. Because he didn’t think anyone would know where Brussels was, he called his creation Belgian waffles. A Belgian waffle is larger with a deeper grid pattern and larger squares than a standard American waffle, and is frequently topped with fresh fruit, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and powdered sugar.

The new secretary of Veterans Affairs, Robert A. McDonald, has been on the job only a short time, but it looks like he’s hit the ground running. A couple things he’s doing:

--By the end of September, every health-care and benefits facility will hold a town hall event. The goal is to hear directly from veterans around the country. “As we seek continual improvement and to rebuild trust among veterans, it is critical that we continue to listen and learn,” says McDonald.

Each medical center and regional office will put out its own schedule. Besides veterans, they want to hear from veteran service organizations and other community partners.

--At McDonald’s direction, the VA will begin a nationwide review of scheduling and access practices. Starting this fall, every medical center will be reviewed by the independent Joint Commission. Its website (www.jointcommission.org) says it’s an “independent, not-for-profit organization [that] accredits and certifies more than 20,500 health-care organizations and programs in the United States.”

This is a big deal. With its exacting standards, it’s likely nothing will get past the commission. I wonder how many of our VA facilities will achieve its Gold Seal of Approval rating.

I heard some simple words for dog owners to live by on the radio recently, and they are paraphrased here:

Don’t ask: “What did you do?” He’ll never answer you.

Don’t say his name with the word “no.” He’ll never come to you.

Don’t point your finger at him. He’ll never trust your hands.

Don’t say “no” over and over and over again.

It’s only a word.

Don’t tell him he’s a bad dog. Why is he a bad dog? Maybe it’s you!

“Don’ts” are often thought of as negative speak, especially on the West Coast. But these are the good don’ts, the important ones, the ones that will keep your relationship with your dog strong and healthy as the two of you navigate the challenges of interspecies communication.

With the right approach to training, canine behavior can be modified from as early on as 8 weeks to as late in life as 12 to 14 years. The “right” approach is determined by the dog -- or, rather, his personality or temperament. For example, a hardheaded dog will require a firm voice and technique; whereas, a timid dog would only be made more fearful by the same treatment.

Bottom line: In order to train your dog, you have to know your dog. And part of knowing your dog is knowing dogs in general and what to expect.

Dogs bark. They chew. They jump, dig, nip, teethe, whine, wiggle and bark some more. None of this is bad -- it’s just dogs being dogs. But some of these behaviors may not align with your expectations.

Consider yourself warned: Expect these behaviors. When your expectations are realistic, you can prepare.

Ever heard of the Five P’s? Purpose, Preparation, Planning, Practice and Performance. They serve as good guidance in the business world, and they apply to dog training, too.

Let’s apply the five P’s to the No. 1 headache for dog owners: housebreaking. Ironically, housebreaking is also one of the easiest problems to prevent or solve. It’s all in the approach and those five P’s.

Morning Brain

We’re morning people! Or at least we are when it comes to completing challenging tasks.

So says a Canadian study done by Baycrest Center for Geriatric Care and a research group affiliated with the University of Toronto.

This must have been a fun bit of research, pairing participants at opposite ends of the age spectrum: Young adults aged 19-30 were tested along with older adults aged 60-82 to see how memory works ... and when.

Memory tests done two times during the day involved seeing and remembering pictures and word combinations, along with distractions PROMO - 8-2-2014 Now, youused can on the computer screen. MRI tests were at the same time to see what parts of the brain ® were active and to see if they correlate with the other results.

Here’s what researchers found out:

During the afternoon, seniors were 10 percent more likely to be distracted by the extra screen information and weren’t completely engaged on the cognitive tasks. Researchers called it “idling,” when the senior brains went into resting mode and weren’t focused.

Fast-forward the clock to morning, and seniors did much better at ignoring the distractions, on par with the younger participants, and focusing on cognitive tasks. The MRIs showed this to be so, with other areas of the brain activated.

Here are just a few things that might be easier to accomplish in the morning:

 Balance checkbook

 Brain puzzles

 Driving test

 Creating a shopping list for a new recipe

 Learning a musical instrument

 Reading

 Planning an event or trip

One of the researchers noted that this morning brain challenge needs to be considered when seniors are being tested. Tests at other times of the day might not be truly accurate.

The Top 10 Social Security Myths

If I had the space, I probably could write a column called “The Top 100 Social Security Myths.” I see examples of them almost every day in the emails I get from my readers. Alas, I’ll barely have room to cover the top 10. With Social Security, there are misunderstandings about programs and policies. And then there are political myths. I will give examples of the former today. In some future column, I will tackle all the silly myths, half-truths and outright lies being spread (mostly on the Internet) about the politics and financing of Social Security.

Myth 1: Social Security retirement benefits are based on your last 10 years of earnings. Other misunderstandings say benefits are determined using a “high five” or a “last three” base of earnings.

None are true. All retirement benefits are based on a person’s highest 35 (not necessarily consecutive) years of earnings -- with each year being adjusted for inflation. If you don’t have that many years of Social Security-covered work by the time you retire, “zero” years are factored into your benefit computation to get to the 35-year base.

Before moving on to Myth 9, here is a quick aside. You will note that Myths 5, 6, 7, and 8 all referred to woman as spouses. Social Security is gender neutral. But society hasn’t been. Men traditionally have made more money than women. And many women take time off from careers to raise a family.

Myth 3: If you are due benefits on two different Social Security accounts, you will get both full benefits. Whenever you are due two Social Security benefits, you don’t get them both. You will only get the benefit that pays the higher amount, or you will get combined benefits that cannot exceed the higher of the two accounts. Quick example: Mary is due $200 from her own Social Security account and $700 in wife’s benefits on her husband’s record. She will get $200 from her account and $500 from her husband for a total of $700.

Myth 4: You must be married for at least 10 years to qualify for spousal benefits from Social Security. That 10-year duration of marriage rule applies only to divorced spouses. For currently married couples, there usually is a one-year marriage requirement.

Myth 10: SSI is some kind of Social Security benefit. Supplemental Security Income is a federal welfare program that has nothing at all to do with

Your pitcher is an example of their Art Nouveau Lady series, which reflected the Art Nouveau movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Pitchers, candlestick holders, toothpick holders, vases, bowls, baskets and dresser sets were some of the pieces in the series. They can be recognized by the Art Nouveau graceful young woman in relief, the curvilinear designs that were inspired by nature and the white satin finish. The pitchers were available in three sizes, a 4 3/4-inch milk pitcher, a 4-inch cream pitcher, and a 6 1/2-inch water pitcher.

Shoulders and arms work together Making a conscious effort to turn the shoulders fully on the backswing can lead to tension in the arms as well as an overuse of the shoulders. This can affect your tempo and timing as well as lead to an incorrect swing path. Take your focus off your shoulders by trying the following drill: Take some practice swings resting the shaft of the club on your right shoulder, just at the base of your neck on the back swing. This will require your arms to be extremely relaxed and it will feel like they are actually collapsing at the top. Then at the finish of your swing let the shaft come to rest on your left shoulder. You will find that your shoulders will respond to your arms and you will still accomplish a full shoulder turn both on your backswing and follow-through. (Keep in mind this is a drill and will feel awkward at first). This will not only help you feel what it’s like to get a proper turn without over swinging, but it will help with your tempo as well.
