Stop using your debit card. The ease and convenience with which you use that thing is startling.

You don’t realize it, but it allows money to slip through your hands like water. For your day-to-day spending, switch to cash. It is inconvenient and that’s the way it should be. Make it difficult for you to spend your own money.

Stop spending coins. Even if the bill comes to $4.02, hand over a $5 bill and get $.98 in coins.

Now, every evening empty your pockets, purse and wallet of all those coins into a container. If you think that won’t start adding up, think again. In one year my husband and I saved $1,100 in coins simply because he doesn’t like to carry them around.

Take the coupon savings in cash. Next time you shop for groceries, ask the checker to give you the subtotal before deducting the value of all your coupons. Write your check for the subtotal, and then receive cash back for the difference. Go directly to your savings place and stash that cash. Now you’re really saving at the grocery store.

Stash all windfalls. A windfall is simply money you were not expecting. It might be a $1 rebate check for light bulbs, $25 from your aunt for your birthday, a quarter you found in the street or tax refund. Instead of seeing this as money to spend, save it!

Automatic deduction. The most painless way to save is through automatic payroll deductions. You don’t miss what you don’t see. Sure you might miss that $20 or $50 in your check next week, even the next. But in time, you’ll completely forget about it. But your savings account won’t.

Your goal should be to save 10 percent of everything you receive, without fail. Seem like an impossible dream? Not at all. Just start small, start today and keep going one coin, one dollar, one percentage point at a time!

A recent column brought a flood of messages to my inbox, most of them with the same message that goes something like this: I want to save. I need to save. But I don’t have any money to save! How can I even get started when I am so close to the edge?

First, let’s review: When it comes to saving ® money, we Americans are a pathetic lot. Here we are blessed with the highest per capita income on by earth, Mary Hunt the face of the yet most recent data shows we’re saving 3.1 percent of our disposable income.

Because that’s an average, that means a whole lot of you have nothing saved, nothing to fall back on in the event of an emergency or unexpected expense.

It feels like you’re just one paycheck away from being homeless and that’s a terrible way to live and one of the greatest contributors to our collective stress.

While not wishing to throw you into a panic, I really need to get tough on this. You must start saving! You have to see yourself as more important than your creditors. Get in line in front of them and pay yourself first! Just do it. When you get your paycheck, your refund, birthday money, etc., take the first part and stash it away.

The spotlight on delayed medical care at a number of Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers has overshadowed some recent good news about the VA’s PACT program, its method of providing personalized primary care.

PACT (Patient Aligned Care Teams) was started in 2010 as a team approach to the wellness of individual veterans by using health plans with care provided at clinics and online via eHealth. Teams are made up of nurse care managers, clinical associates, providers and administrative associates, in tandem with nutritionists, social workers and pharmacists.

Appointments with specialists are easily arranged.

Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it ... individualized medical attention. The veterans who receive these services like it, too, according to a VA news release. Here are some of the stats:

Using secure electronics such as telehealth video conferencing, email messaging, homebased monitoring, phone calls and group meetings, the number of interactions with veterans increased 50 percent.

Of veterans asking for a same-day appointment with their personal provider, 65 percent got it.

Of those who asked for a specific appointment date, 78 percent were accommodated. In the past year, care during non-business hours increased 75 percent.

More than 70 percent of veterans who are discharged from the hospital are contacted within two days to make sure they understand their instructions and to see how they’re doing.

Mental-health care services, also a component of PACT, increased 18 percent.

As a result of PACT, there’s been a 33 percent decrease in the number of veterans needing urgent care, and hospital admissions decreased 12 percent for acute conditions.

The bottom line? In a PACT satisfaction survey, over 90 percent of veterans had positive assessments of both inpatient and outpatient care.

It looks like anger. It looks like Cujo. It looks like bared teeth and frothing at the mouth. But it also looks like tension -- straight tail, ears up, wide eyes, a stiffening of the body and face, a gradual lifting of the snout in response to direct eye contact.

What does aggression sound like?

It sounds like growling -- anything from a low rumble to a threatening, lip-curling snarl. Barking can be a sign of aggression, too, although dogs use their bark to communicate in ways that have nothing to do with aggression. However, barking in tandem with any of the above is safe to define as aggression.

The following letter from a reader demonstrates the signs and progression of aggression left unchecked:

“We have a serious issue with our sweet girl, ‘Suki.’ She shows severe fear aggression with certain people. It used to be a little low growl, which progressed to lunging with some backtracking. Now it is full-on, in-your-face snarling, barking and even jumping on or at certain people if we don’t grab her in time.

“Suki does very well on walks, walking right by people and dogs, often looking at them but quickly ignoring them. It’s only if they approach, stop and stare directly at her that she gets stressed out. She also frequently startles on walks and is often looking behind her even if no one is there.

“It is to the point that even my brother and father don’t want us to bring her because she does this to them whenever they stand up or walk around the house. She is fine with them if they are seated and will even approach them, lick them and let them pet and play with her. But the second they stand up, she is in their face snarling and growling and not letting them go anywhere. Please help!”

The most important thing I can say about dog aggression is don’t put a euphemism on it. Don’t call it anger. Don’t call it 2moodiness.

A major misconception is that a decline in sexual function with advancing age is inevitable. The majority of couples remain sexually active throughout life, with only 15 percent of men and women experiencing sexual problems. Things may not be the same as they once were, but there is no reason for the elderly not to remain sexually active.

Sexual dysfunction is often neglected. Much has been written about sexual dysfunction -- also called erectile dysfunction -- in men, but problems occur in women as well. Unfortunately, few health care providers attempt to identify or treat sexual difficulties. Both physician and patient may be embarrassed to raise the issue, which is a big mistake.

In both men and women, loss of libido and an inability to become aroused are frequent features of sexual dysfuncton.

Recent advertisements imply that from age 30 onward there is an inexerable decline in testosterone with advancing age in men. Marketers almost overnight have given this the notorious name of “low T.” Apart from loss of libido or sex drive, low T is blamed for depression, insomnia, increasing weakness and decreased exercise tolerance. Needless to say, there are many causes for these nonspecific symptoms. However, the only universal symptom of low testosterone is decline in libido. Testosterone does not affect arousal, and deficiency does not cause an inability to have an erection.

The actual number of men with testosterone deficiency is very small. Many men with values in the lower limit of the normal range now receive replacement therapy with testosterone. Unless loss of libido is a major issue, this approach is questionable, as hormone replacement therapy is not without its problems.

Women also have small amounts of the male hormone testosterone. In combination with low levels of estrogen, reductions in testosterone can affect libido in women.

My great-grandfather was a shopkeeper, and he purchased the Dodge scale seen in this picture July 16, 1918, for $230.

He used it to weight fruits and vegetables. The bin and some of the parts are copper. It has a marble shelf that is supported by a metal base.

The scale is about 22 inches long and 13 inches high. It can weigh up to 20 pounds. The scale is in perfect condition, plus I have the original directions book and purchase receipt. My family has lived in Pennsylvania for generations, and I have found the Pennsylvania Dutch are meticulous in their bookkeeping! To me, the scale is a lovely decorative piece and a cherished family heirloom. I hope it will be as precious to my children as it is to me. Perhaps you can tell us more about its histor y.

When hitting out of a bunker, a common tendency for many amateurs is to decelerate or stop the club completely after impact. The result usually leaves the ball still in the bunker. It is important to have a complete follow-through when hitting out of the sand, but for some players it can be difficult to incorporate that feel.

As a drill, hit some bunker shots with only your left hand (for left-handed players, use your right hand). This will force you to take a longer swing, as well as exaggerate your follow-through. Don’t lock your elbow or wrist after impact. Allow the elbow to remain relaxed and the wrist to hinge after impact and during the follow-through. This drill will give you the proper feel for what it is like to accelerate through the ball.

As an additional result, you should find that you are now utilizing the full bounce of the club and that the club head slides through the sand much more cleanly. of Coachella Valley
